All this praise for the story, gunplay and sim driving has me hyped.
As someone who really isn't into open-world crime games, I was pretty excited to try this mainly due to the racial politics the devs claimed they were tackling. Should I still bother?
The shooting gunplay here is ridiculously good. So good in fact I'd feel pretty safe saying it's the best I've played in an open world game. Probably the most shocking thing about the game because I wasn't expecting much after how flaccid the gunplay felt in m2.
How does simulation change the driving? Enjoy normal mode butI'm curious.

The car takes longer to get up to speed and takes longer to stop to.
I'm not sure what else it effects.
Tougher to handle too.
Pause the game and use the RB button to switch tabs until you get to Options.

This is so much better. Why is this not the default.Turn on Simulation driving. It's under the options.
Amen to this. The gunplay in this game really shines, and I agree - the heaviness of each gun, the impact and feedback, all feel good. It's very enjoyable to mess up a stealth encounter and turn it into an all out shootout because the firefights are wild. As far as the TPS open genre goes, it feels like the best set of shooting mechanics across the board. It feels chunky and I like that. A lot.
The writing is some of the best I've experienced so far. For all it's issues, the story isn't one of them.
Yes.
The game has so far done a stellar job of depicting racism, racist attitudes from both sides and the in game effects of racism.
The story is amazing and the devs handle race issues quite well.
Rented the game from Redbox and got passed the bank heist mission and damn controlling that boat underground was brutal for me.
While waiting for Mafia III to be fixed I decided to replay Mafia II and I had forgotten just how brilliant it actually was, I haven't played it since release so I've pretty much forgotten the story, it's like I'm playing it for the first time again but with wicked déjà vu. It's amazing how well it holds up 6 years later which is a testament to just how well the devs did back then.
Wow after the shitshow of getting a star wars bluRay in the case. I'm finally playing and I've gotta admit that the story is looking good. Gunplay and car handling could be better but the story is hitting all the right notes!
Mafia II maxed out on PC still looks good. It's aged very well.
Yo wtf, they have every song in this. This soundtrack is like Vice City level holy shit.

I should play Mafia II while I wait for this patch (never played it)

You can tell pretty early on, if anything, the gun play is great. It makes doing the missions and random tasks so much more fun and visceral. Every open world game needs to do this. And have appropriate reactions to gun shots.
This is exactly why repetition is not something I care if the core gunplay/gameplay is fun.
Oh my god, the initial installing is so damn long. I just want to play.
Although it's not necessary, playing as Vito in Mafia II definitely adds a little to Mafia III since he's a character in it.
