Mafia 3 |OT| "Family isn't who you're born with, it's who you die for"

I seem to have lost access to an optional (pretty important) questline after getting an infinite black save-screen after turning in one of those ''Righteously fucked'' truck missions for Nicki (burke mission to generate income for his rackets). It's no longer showing up under Optional Missions. Anyone else run into this? It's the only way to increase income for Burke's rackets as far as i know.

That seems really odd. I wonder why that happened.

He was on the edge of betraying me on the very first sitdown because I gave him one of the rackets but gave the district to Vito. He was making all kinds of threats and I thought it was the end right there.

Can someone who killed a lieutenant explain what exactly happens after? I saw in Ghostrobo's video that after one of them dies
the person below them becomes the new person in charge. Do you keep the upgrades in that case?

I've never played Mafia before so I know it's not like other games.

And while I'm enjoying it immensely, I feel like there needs to be random side stuff to do or make the world a bit more alive.

Is there a way to resolve the first real mission in the swamp without the alert state and fight for the second part? I meticulously stealthed everybody, except the group of three enemies in the middle, but killing the boss activated a full out war. Do you get a different outcome if you run up to the boss and knock him out without killing him?

Did you do all of Burkes sidequests up to that point in collecting the cars ? That's supposed to increase their loyalty I believe.

Also maybe assigning them rackets but then giving the district to someone else pisses them off. I tend to give the rackets and then the district to the same person. Is keeping things calm so far.

Really? I think I'll have to make a clear path on how I'll decide to assign rackets and then districts. The available rackets to give will always be for the same district you are about to assign right? If that is the case I'll assign the rackets to the same person and give them the district at the sitdown and keep doing the same for everyone.

Having a blast so far I'm probably a few hours in?
The world is open and I've decided giving my first territory to Burke in Barclay Mills, will be divvy up territory based on their rackets and how I feel the under bosses will put them to use. Headed to Tickfaw Harbor to clear it out and hand it over to Vito.
, but this is my type of game, here are my impressions.

Pros
*Classic Cars I've always been obsessed so its eye candy for me.
*Musical atmosphere, hard not to catch myself singing 99% of the songs in this game.
*Story is good so far, and hits me hard for personal reasons so I emphasize for the most part.
Gameplay Wise
* Lethal take downs repeat eventually but man do I still get a rush out of em.
*Stealth is generic but I use it for the most part depending on how I care to approach a situation.
*The option to go stealth or stroll up and start popping fools is great.
*How heavy of a presence cops are in white neighborhoods and how quickly they respond as opposed to the black neighborhoods.
*Guns the impact and weight feels right, the way Lincoln strafes when he's still aiming into a sprint is good animation. Cover system can definitely use work, I won't put it under cons because it does perform at the basic level, to stand behind something and not get shot.

Cons
*No traffic laws what so ever. And no matter what you do (if spotted crashing into objects) when you get reckless driving, cops are always shoot first never ticket, never arrest just like GTA.
*Open-world filler, collectables hate them and always will but I deal with it.
-Junction boxes are fine and all but collecting the fuses is down right annoying as fuck, most especially when you hit the Bayou.
-Same goes for Playboy, Vargas, HotRod and Vinyls.
*Customization is almost completely absent. I would have enjoyed changing Lincolns hair, outfit and fully customizing a car. I get it might be available later but there's no reason it shouldn't have been released with the game.
*No Garage/Car saving. Trippy, I find this very annoying, because I feel the cars available when you get
Burke's car delivery
are not as top notch as the ones you'll find regularly driving out in the map. The fact you also can't save any of the cars, but obviously have visible garages scattered through out the map is nonsense. I mostly hate when I have a great car I stole good acceleration, gets replaced when I do delivery runs and now they saved this delivery truck. But why?

Overall, there's so much more, and I know my cons out weigh my pros. But I am one of those fans that will only abandon Mafia if it ever acquires microtransactions.. I didn't go into this game expecting anything, I just really wanted to experience it. I knew that would come with the price of open-world nonsense that developers need to learn how to put a handle on. Plus I'm past the age of critiquing one of my hobbies until my head spins. I'll either enjoy it or I won't. Maybe this will help some people still on the fence maybe it won't but I felt the need to convey some what of a basic "review" amongst everyone else's in this thread. Because hell, I've enjoyed Mafia I, II and now I get to add III to that list. And that's alright. Wish Hanger 13 did better, but I'm sure they'll learn from their mistakes.

Yeah, i'm actually glad there aren't achievements for any of these.

No bald cap? Lies!
Fairly sure, but not positive, that there are more fuses than you need for the junction boxes. Right now I have completed 6 districts, not including Bayou, and fully collected everything in them and I have something like ~150 Fuses on hand, which means I'm good for another 50 junction boxes and I'm pretty sure the last 3 districts won't have that many between them. I think they generally have like a dozen or so.

Welcome to the Mafia series.

Is there a way to maintain a car speed under the speed limit? Mafia 1 had a button for this if I remember correctly. PC version played with a 360 controller here.

No, that's one of the things they've removed in this game. Even switching on the trigger locks on my Elite controller isn't enough so you'd just have to feather it yourself.

One thing I am getting tired of and this isn’t the only game, just another in a stupid trend. The ability to manually save the game and allow for multiple saves. I’ve seen reports of people losing progress and having to start over after X hours of play. I’ve disabled cloud saving for the PS4 and upload manually it after every play session. I was irritated when we started seeing games with 2-3 save spot, then this whole only one save bullshit started, and now I can’t even tell where/if I’m saved.

Loved Mafia 1 & 2, was an idiot and jumped in before reviews and I'm really disappointed.

I didn't sign up for Assassin's Creed: New Bordeaux, played for a good chunk of hours and it's just the same, old repetitive side quest tasks just to get to one decent mission every few hours. Not worth it.

Mafia 2 was the perfect length, it doesn't need all this padding and tbh it doesn't even feel like a Mafia game anymore. Will be trading it in to get Dragon Quest Builders on Friday...

The wanted system is such a huge, huge improvement over GTA.

You commit a crime, someone calls the cops. A direct radius forms, but it takes some time for the police to actually show up. Because that's how it works in real life, the police has a response time. They have a vague description of you and will actively search for you inside the radius, but at long as you stay out of the radius you're fine.

They'll search around for a while and eventually call off the search.

The cops aren't omnipotent like in GTA, won't spawn out of nowhere even if you're in the middle of the sticks like in GTA and won't instantly know your position like in GTA. You also don't get an insta-wanted level if you punch someone once.

You don't even have to stay out. You can hide inside the radius and stealth kill coppers and still lose the wanted level if no one detects you.

20 hours in, and I really like it.

I put probably 80 hours into Mafia 2, replayed it multiple times on PC and 360. The thing is, I really loved driving in that game. Advancing the story to a specific spot and just killing gun shop owners and customizing cars. The DLC mission structure actually reminds me of a lot of the open racket missions in Mafia III- it retains most of the tedium, and takes away from the brilliant story writing and narrative progression. And yet I don't mind it here as much, mainly because there are some really neat interiors to explore and some fun shootouts to be had. The biggest problem is that you can clear an area out, and when it's time to go take down the racket boss, you might end up at the same location completely restocked with goons. This breaks a lot of immersion.

But you know what? I think this game has the best shooting mechanics of the TPS open world genre, right next to RDR for me. I think the driving is heavy and I like that a lot, power sliding and drifting through streets is great. I wish the damage models were much more detailed, and I can't wait for the customization to be included. I wish the car delivery service allowed you to choose the color of the vehicle, instead of the same nine or so. But I'm really looking forward to each unique mission to take over the district, and to kill the underbosses. I wonder if they chose to make it a shorter game, with these strung along in an order you choose to proceed in, if players would feel better about the game.

Personally, I love the open world. I think we've got to ask ourselves how to improve mission design, objectives and story telling. This game has beautiful cinematic presentation in cutscenes and the world they've created is really beautiful. The gameplay inside the world, is derivative and repetitive but I'm okay with that. I often wonder when you play a game like GTA or Assassin's Creed, traveling to a mission marker to initiate a small cutscene followed by some of the more mundane tasks using the game mechanics doesn't feel far off from having these similar mission types in the open world, presented without a marker.

I love the open world genre, but I think only with a smaller and denser environment, will gameplay improvements be made. I've also paced myself slowly to enjoy the game a lot, slowly taking over a district, so I don't get burned out. As for exploring and collecting in New Bordeaux, I love the setting. It's a city that I know for years to come I'll enjoy loading up to drive and listen to music. We need new outfits!

Getting near the end. This game desperately needed some kind of feature that would have made the territory conquest more interesting and less of a chore, like the nemesis system in Mordor or having to manage your empire like a business or something.

Tonally it's a little odd how the game switches between really powerful cutscenes that use real life footage on one hand and Tarantino-esque revenge story where one dude massacres every henchman and their slightly goofy bosses on his own on the other hand. I'm curious to see how they'll wrap up the story. If previous Mafia games are any indications:
tragically
.

One thing you can't take away from this game: the soundtrack is amazing. On par with Vice City in terms of both quantity and quality of songs.

I'm enjoying the game so far. It definitely seems repetitive, but the story is strong and the cutscenes are great with good voice acting. Like many here, I really wish they had opted to go for a more linear experience like in Mafia 2, the open world here is bland.

Still, happy with it for the most part. Will likely take a bit of a break while I play through the Gears 4 campaign though.

Don't be alarmed at the spoiler. I just finished the game and from what I can tell, there's multiple endings. Possibly three of them. You're given the choices at the very end so I'm assuming this. I stupidly didn't upload my save to re-load the game and try the other choices though. 10/10 story though, holy fuck.

EDIT: Also there's a mid-credits scene that's amazing.

I have played game through and I have no to what he is referring with that comment. Doesn't spoil anything.

So there are multiple endings then? Write in a spoiler what choices you made at the end.

This is what happened for me at the end of the game:

*****ENDING OF THE GAME SPOILERS SO DON'T HIGHLIGHT THEM IF YOU PLAN ON PLAYING THIS GAME*****

I chose to stay and go to the Plantation House. Once there, I was given the choice to kill the three people I worked with throughout the game and rule alone or to work together. I killed them.

Don't read this next part if you plan on playing through it again and making the other choice.

Then I went outside, got in my car, and BOOM. Father had planted a car bomb on me because he believed I was just as big of a monster as Sal and shouldn't be allowed to live.

Did you also get a mid-credits scene? I'm assuming that's the same for every ending.

EDIT: Well I'll be damned. After the credits roll you're taken back to the main screen so I pressed continue and it takes you to the final part where you make a choice. TIME TO SEE IF THERE'S A DIFFERENCE!

If you upgrade this wheel fully that driving is not possible anymore lol

I have played game through and I have no idea to what he is referring with that comment. Doesn't spoil anything.

That is because (spoiler regarding end of game),
there are at least four different endings in the game.

The following:

1. You decide to leave New Bordeaux behind, Vito takes over the city, finishes the casino and lives in the upper penthouse of it. Lincoln is seen somewhere in California, travels around, finds a girl, however parts with her again. Father James gets occasional postcards from him. (I chose that, fits perfectly into the canon and game overall imho)

2. You decide to rule New Bordeax together with your underbosses. You continue business, wherever you get money from, drugs, sex, etc.. Father James is really sad about that obviously. That is the only option if you really want to continue with the free roam.

3. You decide to rule New Bordeaux alone, kill all of your underbosses and step out of the bayou house. As you enter your car, it blows up. Father James could not stand what you became in the course of events and decided he takes the responsibility that there cannot be another "Sal Marcano" and planted that bomb.

There has to be a fourth one I have not seen if you killed Vito. Maybe his assistant takes the city, I do not know.
