Pheonix volume 2-5

Loving it. Future (volume 2) is my favourite so far.

The 4th volume was amazing as well, reminded me a lot of Buddha (which is still my favourite Tezuka manga)

People need to stop buying HxH, Togashi will never come back at this rate. It seems like the Magi anime has done its job but Kuroko and SnK should have overtaken it by year's end . We have some really promising newcomers in the form of Swagamoto, AC, Mix and Terra Formars.

I wish it went beyond ten, wanted to see where Haikyuu would have ended up.

Assassinations Classrooms individual volumes already even more than bleach and will pass Kuroko, wonder if it can get to Naruto/HxH tier.

Tower of God and Noblesse are better than 80% of manga out there.

I'm caught up on Tower of God, and I'd say it's pretty average. You can see the way the webtoon format affects the art (textureless cg, lots of wasted space) and the story (giving background information constantly, ambitiously huge in scope), but it's got a lot of typical battle shounen in its DNA as well (chosen boy off to save the world, crappy fight scenes).

better? Tower of God started off worst than 80% of the manga on the market.

What didn't you like about it? I'm surprised you weren't a fan of Koon.

Generally speaking, though, the thing that bothers me most about KOREAN WEBTOONZ is the conspicuous waste of space. There's a lot of blank, empty areas in between panels that just go unused for the most part--it's fine if you want to denote, say, the passage of time, but otherwise it just feels like a waste. Being unbound to the confines of the printed page is okay, but many artists just don't take advantage of that.

Well they do take advantage of it, and that causes the problems you're talking about. Constraints are underrated.

Was it ever explained why Togashi went on hiatus this time?
Also I didn't realize he got married to the woman who made Sailor Moon lol

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
One Piece killing it as usual.
Impressive numbers for Titan and Magi.
AssClass continuing to be a strong rookie.

Naruto isn't even in the top 5? Wow.

Is Terra ForMars worth reading?

Dragon Quest X. Since it's an MMO, HxH is dead now.

We never got an explanation.

I wonder if Silver Spoon will actually get an anime boost this summer? Most of its sales came from boost after winning Taisho, I wonder there is any more audience for it to capture.

So far I like the historical stories more than the sci-fi ones.

There were some funny gags but I can't handle the bishounen. This probably would have been better if it was just about Tezuka and her troubles as a manga artist, but it can't be a shoujo without terrible pretty boys I guess.

dat One Piece sales decline. The fans have spoken, your manga sucks now.

Magi 183

Interesting that a man who was "obsessed with war" has healing as his main powers. Really interested in Kouen hope he and Alibaba get a chance to talk soon

I should have reread the series to reacquaint myself with who everyone is and their motivations, because it took me a while to remember what was going on.

The actual release schedule of volumes has something to do with it, I believe. Last year had 2 OP volumes in the first half. This year only has one.

This too. Plus, 2011 started the time skip, and those are massive builders of hype.

So it's because way more volumes came out in 2010 then did this year?
One volume difference doesn't result in the huge gap in sales. Basically 2010, 2011 is when the manga exploded in popularity so you had all these new fans buying up the old volumes in droves boosting up the sales. That's why you would end up with things like One Piece vol 1 selling 500k in one year. Obviously now, the hype has died off and the sales are back to normal although they are a bit lower than usual.

So we will see another one of these for OP in 5-10 years when the next generation is old enough to rebuy all the old stuff?

Are they really lower though? There's less day one sales for sure, but there's no reason to believe that OP volumes aren'tcreeping along just shy of the weekly charts. 7 million sales in 6 months with only one volume release would suggest as much. The total sales at the end of the year will paint a clearer picture.

The current generation will show it to their kids, and they will spend all their money on buying the 90+ volumes of it.

Antiwhippy

the holder of the trombone
Magi

It's good to be back.

Wonder if kouen will show his full power when mogamett attacks. His generals are pretty awesome though.

Don't you know? Shueisha has a unique copyright on physical print media DRM; if someone other than the original buyer tries to read One Piece, the volume won't open until they pay an activation fee.

Would be awesome if they did the same thing for the anime, only instead you got the 4kids version :p

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"

So that's what was meant in Naruto by "the new generation will surpass the old"

10 years from now no one is gonna bother with reading manga.

Take out 3 millions from first half 2012 sales and it's still higher than 2013. Either way, I have a feeling end of year numbers won't come close to 23 millions (2012 sales).

I'm fascinated by One Piece's decline in quality. On the one hand, the scale is larger and every issue is still interesting and full of lore, but on the other hand its size is also making story arcs too cumbersome. There hasn't been a well-executed emotional moment since Marineford either. I'm still following it, and the mysteries are interesting, but it's not really what I signed up for.

I wonder if fans in Japan feel the same way?

It's also impossible to approach if you are new to it now. I'm about 100 chapters in, and I just feel overwhelmed by the length of it that I don't know If I want to continue.

To be perfectly honest I've been having such a blast exploring western comics that I don't even miss the manga days of yore.

This is happening for me as well. Marvel has done a great job with Marvel NOW making stuff much more approachable. A series like X-men which has thousands of issues between all of its runs can be reasonably approached by reading the current ongoings (of which only one is even 10 issues old at this point). Even if you know nothing about the story or characters- I picked up Young Avengers because someone told me it had a respectable gay teenage romance as one of it's driving plot points, and I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it and how by the end of the first 5 issues I knew who all the characters were and understood the plot.
