Mario Kart Switch: all Wii U + new tracks, characters, battle mode, < 3 mos fr launch

I'm glad people are happy so I won't rain on their parade.

This does nothing for me even beyond the fact that it appears to be another game not ready at launch.

Glad some people are excited though.

Am I being ridiculous in thinking that for Wii U owners the Switch isn't a highly enticing product and that leaves fair amount of potential customers on the table? Obviously this is all speculation right now and until the day of the Switch presentation anything could change but I'm just giving a point of view from someone interested but not yet sold and the current software lineup does nothing to help that.

Two games are just a part of the proposition. Wait for 3rd parties to see if the Switch is interesting or not.

I am not too nervous about the WiiU fanbase. Please be realistic. WiiU owners are "for the most part" diehard Nintendo fans that would have (or will buy) buy the switch anyway.

3DS fanbase is the people who will make the switch a success (forget about the wii fanbase).

I played the heck out of Mario Kart 8 and I'll definitely jump back in for the Switch version. This news also gives me a ton of hope for the Switch's first-party lineup. If we get a 3D Mario and Splatoon on day one, followed by at least one great first party title a month... Holy shit.

Based on the rumors we've heard, Switch will have:
Zelda
Mario Kart 8
Pokemon
Smash
Pikmin
Retro's game

All within the first year. I'll honestly be happy if that's it without any new surprises. If they throw in some new stuff it'll be even better! Add in third party support and hot damn!

I'm only expecting 8 new tracks at most. Wouldn't be surprised if half of those are legacy ones. And that's fine if it's not a barren desert the rest of the year as far as actual new releases go.

I think we haven't heard any rumours on a new Pikmin game for Switch.

I own a Wii U and don't begrudge Nintendo one bit for the incoming enhanced ports to Switch. Hardly anyone owned a Wii U and it just makes good business sense to expose that content to a new consumer base. More software at regular intervals is all I ever wanted to begin with. If some of those titles are enhanced ports at launch, great. You'd have to be pretty bitter to have a problem with that.

I need all the N64 battle stages back.
As for characters, I want Ganondorf, Green Platinum Luigi, Zero Suit Samus, Kirby (damn smash trailer), and Sonic
as a kart

We need to be realistic about the WiiU. And precisely in order to not have another WiiU situation, it's obvious Nintendo will want to offer exclusive reasons for people to buy a Switch.

By the way, kind of off topic, but I don't get why MK7 never got any DLC, they would have made quite a bit of money there.

We've seen or heard absolutely nothing relating to why that would be the case other than Nintendo saying they were focusing the console & handheld devisions. What is it about the Switch that's supposed to be enticing to 3DS owners?

I'm going off what Emily Rogers has said there. Miyamoto mentioned quite some time ago that they have a Pikmin game that is "nearly done". I haven't seen Emily or any other "insiders" confirm that the 2D Pikmin game for 3DS is that project.

Edit: Here's the original source - http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-07-20-pikmin-4-in-development-and-very-close-to-completion

Thanks, haven't seen the tweet before!

P.S. if you didn't see the other thread, we're now looking at:

Splatoon packed in in deluxe model at launch
3D Mario Switch at launch
Skyrim at launch
MK within 3 months of launch
Zelda several months after launch
Smash at some point not at launch

(Presumably IMO other title(s) at launch and plenty throughout the year.)

Good list indeed, especially if Pikmin "4" is added later in the year as well. The only thing missing from this, arguably, is something entirely new in the vein of Wii Sports or Nintendo Land for the Wii and Wii U respectively. Even a small, budget new Switch-specific game would be sufficient as long as it shows off the system and feels fresh and new.

With regards to MK8, while it never came close to being my favorite MK, more content is always welcome - especially a new Battle Mode and hopefully some more single player stuff like an actual award ceremony after cups or an all-cup tour. Hopefully all the old tracks, characters etc. will remain present as well. (Some of the babies and metal versions of characters can be left out this time though.)

Edit: one concern though is that this Super MK8 will end up being the only MK game for Switch, unless they break the rule of one MK per system. I'd prefer getting a completely new game as well, one that goes back to the drawing board (to make it a slightly more pure racing game again with less focus on gimmicks like hang-gliders etc. and on overly disruptive items) or alternatively that goes in new and interesting directions (like a transition to Nintendo Kart).

Depending on the price and the amount of new tracks, I'm in. If they charge something like $40 USD then it seems totally reasonable. If they charge full price for a port with a new DLC pack I'm out though.

Oh man. The news is exactly what I wanted to hear. I hope that it's true.

4-6 new cups w splatoon track
6-12 new characters including Kamek, Diddy Kong, Bowser Jr, etc
Better Battle mode.

Those would be so perfect! 😄

I really hope we will have some surprises left come January. The detail these leaks go into are already a little too much IMO.

Gimme those Smash leaks please!

I think the title should be modified because this appears to be from an insider.

Otherwise good, another game I don't need to get for the Switch. Because I'm not buying it twice.

So far for me only the new Mario game and maybe BotW(will get it but not sure on which system yet).

Smash GAF would be reunited lol

Nice to hear they're selling you the same perfectly functional game again but on a new console and with some new skins.

Personally this doesn't excite me. Not worth it for me yet. I want new software.

I hope you're speaking on your own behalf here. Mario Kart 8 along with all of the DLC and even more content is definitely worthy of being a full $60 release.

I do wonder if existing Wii-U owners will get to upgrade for a discounted price... It would be a nice gesture for those of us that supported the console, though I don't "expect" it.

Not being excited is okay, but new tracks, characters and mechanics are not "some new skins".

Mario Kart 8 deserves a bigger audience so I'm on board.

I absolutely loved Mario Kart 8, except for the battle mode. If they get the new battle mode right then the Switch version will be absolutely perfect. I'm really looking forward to what they've created.

There's a team dedicated to Mario Kart yeah. Usually, they put out a new game in 3 years. What they put here in 3 years is an upport.
MKDS: 2006 -> MKWii: 2009 -> MK3DS: 2011 -> MK8: 2014 -> MK8+: 2017

Mario Kart DS: November 2005
Mario Kart Wii: April 2008 (29 months later)
Mario Kart 7: December 2011 (44 months later)
Mario Kart 8: May 2014 (29 months later)
Mario Kart ??: May 2017? (36 months later)

Oh wow that's awesome! Glad it's supposed to have a bunch of extra content and not just the Wii U version with the DLC. Now I'm wondering if I should hold off on playing my copy of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and just get this instead so that it's 100% fresh.

So Nintendo's plan is to release entries in some of it's most popular franchises all in one calendar year? Seems pretty fucking stupid to me cause they won't really have anything for year two. I mean Mario, Kart, Smash, and Zelda can each carry a calendar year/holiday season, I know they are ports but it'll probably be a while before we get proper sequels. I just feel like they are blowing their load early with the Switch if this is all coming out year one. I'm skeptical but as a non Wii U owner that would be dope.

Actually, if you think about it, this is an incredibly good sign for the Switch.

If Nintendo is comfortable putting out essentially all of their known heavy hitters in year 1, and Kimishima has explicitly stated several times that they cannot afford any software droughts, it makes me very optimistic that year 2 will be full of different games than we're used to seeing from Nintendo. I actually wouldn't be so sure we'll see any "proper" sequels to their typical multiplayer games- those have historically been 1 per console. Using the Wii U versions as a base and combining their handheld and console dev teams will free up a lot of resources to work on different IPs and new IPs.

Remember, Nintendo historically puts out about 20 games a year across all of their hardware. That will all be focused on the Switch from 2018 going forward.

How do you know that is the only thing they have been working on these past 3 years? Maybe the "Mario Kart team" actually was able to work on something different than a Mario Kart game. You literally know nothing.
I love how he is basically calling those people slackers. While he is most likely posting from his work office..slacking.

Definitely on my behalf. I already own MK8 and all the DLC. Literally more than $100 in Canadian dollars. I can't justify spending another $80 CAD on a rerelease with another DLC pack. For new players it's definitely a great value but to anyone who already owns MK8 and all the DLC it'll be a hard sell.

In what galaxy is a new 3D Mario at launch a weak lineup?!

In my galaxy. First couple of months after N64 launch, there was nothing good to play but Mario 64. It was a great game but I got sick playing same thing over and over again.

Plus if they want this console to hit millions in its first year, they need to have more than Mario and remasters. Nintendo needs to attract kiddie-hater gamers to system, there needs to be a less colorful core game on launch day. If I were Nintendo, i'd have Bayo 3 ready at the launch to make huge impact.

...you seriously think a niche action game made by a niche studio would make a "huge impact"?

No way. If you said something mainstream like Battlefield or Call of Duty that'd be a little more understandable.

I agree that variety is always better, but lol at Bayonetta 3 being a system seller.
