It's a spinoff, stop moping around, it's not a real metroid game, it's just a spinoff set in an aproximation of the metroid universe.

Spinoffs are for franchises that haven't been dormant for 5 years and without a well-recieved game for even longer. You make an off-model spinoff inbetween a couple of Primes, not as a series revival when the series is already perceived as being on shaky ground.

This has to be a game they put Metroid branding on after the initial pitch, like BK nuts and bolts. Otherwise it seems like a real stretch.

I doubt it. Nuts and Bolts had an actual gameplay hook that could be attached to something.

I doubt nintendo said "What if we made 4 people cooperatively shoot stuff in a series of bland circular arenas?" or "What if we made soccer, but you use guns instead of feet?" and were so excited about the idea that they had to scramble to find a way to turn it into a real marketable game. It seems much more likely they looked at the metroid franchise and asked "what can we do to put another one of those out as cheaply as possible?"
