Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

Ive heard this looks really good if you watch the treehouse gameplay but im scared to spoil it.

Should i check it out?

I do need some convincing, as ive heard some people arent impressed with who is behind it
What sort of spoilers are you scared of? They do show some very simple "secret" breakable blocks but they get barely any power ups. They do speak to the (very simple) core premise (which you'd know immediately upon starting). They show some boss fights and combat.

It's cool footage imo.

So I went through all of the footage from Treehouse and compiled the maps; and I also put them side by side with the maps from the original game. Keep in mind the maps from the 3DS game are incomplete.

Cheers. So it looks like the existing map is going to be a bit denser like Zero Mission, assuming A0 is anything to go by.

After seeing the footage and hearing other tidbits about its development, I feel confident in saying that the people behind this game have got our back. I think this could end up being one of the better games in a series filled with great games or at least on par with Fusion and Zero Mission.

2017 has become a dream come true for Nintendo fans. New Zelda, Mario, and Metroid that all are/look incredible.

Just for the heck of it, here's the overall/world map with the first 3 areas from the 2nd tree house showing of this game

Definitely hoping we see their interpretation of whatever happened to the researchers that were there before Samus (since that was a detail from the original game's manual), as well as some new areas.
I refuse to support mercury steam
They're not making stuff for mafia Konami. Seriously, if this game turns out to be great, I hope it changes your mind and shows you that all they needed was good direction and good people.

I refuse to support mercury steam

I mean, nintendo have already been paying them for two years, so buying/not buying won't change anything there.

The thing that's going to decide whether nintendo use ms again will be the critical success, not the commercial success. If nintendo think they put out a good game, they'll assume the problem is the metroid franchise not selling well (which is indeed an issue), and use them again on a different franchise.

I know they've made some bad games and had some internal turmoil but is Mercury Steam known for unethical practices or something?

Is it just me or does this game have a lot more of a Prime feel to it with various assets used? Which is a change from the last Sakamoto Metroid game which tried as best as they could to ignore it's existence.

While looking through footage I noticed this mysterious creature in the background of Area 4 outside the door leading to the first super missile expansion:

All you see are its red eyes glowing and steam coming out its nostrils.

Cool, could be like that boss you could see through the plate glass in metroid fusion.

You mean Nightmare? It's not giving me Nightmare vibes. It reminds me of the Queen Metroid mostly, or Ridley. Ridley did they eye thing at the start of Super.

Yeah. I just meant that Sakamoto's done that kind of tease before.

I'd be surprised if it was Ridley or the Queen. I'd expect a completely new enemy. Would help to change up from fighting metroids all the time.

Other M did it well, too. You're running through the start of the lava area and you see that fish jumping around in the background, then suddenly it destroys the bridge you're on.

Wow I've never seen or noticed that before.

How could you not? It's really in your face: https://youtu.be/4bFYZ5q_E-E?t=6m42s

Ah cool, I forgot that. Only played Other M once.

Speaking of which, wonder if OM will ever get the remake treatment. There's a great game in their somewhere waiting to get out. Would be a lot of work though, removing the linearity and story jank and adding upgrades.

That part still gives me nightmares (no pun intended) while playing Metroid Fusion at night haha. I do think it could be Ridley since the Queen Metroid has multiple eyes

I love the melee addition. will make combat much more engaging.

That's so cool. Looks like a new enemy too.

Replaying Fusion, I'm enjoying seeing enemies in the background, and I could see it working really well in this remake with 3D graphics, I hope they use it for atmosphere too rather than just teasing bosses.

Also, that area looks quite pretty.

I'd say the design and look is much more Zero Mission. The ruins even have the chozo glyphs from Zero Mission and overall it has kind of a comicbooky look that Zero Mission was going for.

That damn mirror is back...

Chozo glyphs abound. They remind me of Sheikah. Wonder if they're related. Maybe the Chozo visited Hyrule in the distant past and shared their technology.

The BoTW Rito are their direct descendants, with the Wind Waker tribe of mutated Zoras merely taking their name.

They committed the terrible crime of ripping the Castlevania series away from IGA and people are hating them for it. To call any of those games bad it's ridiculous IMO. As for "internal turmoil", I wish people would have learnt from the Rime fiasco.

Hopefully it's a new boss. The new bosses added a lot to Zero Mission IMO.

They didn't rip shit from anyone. If anyone did was Konami who decided to move it from Iga to mercurysteam and in some way they were vindicated since Lords of Shadow 1 became the best selling Castlevania game of all time! So something they must've done right! MoF and LoS2 were pretty mediocre though.

Back in 1994 it took me weeks to figure out how to access this area

Oh man, hardest part of Super Metroid BY FAAAAAAAAAAAR.

Hidden in plain sight too.

MoF is a bad game
LoS is a boring game, which is almost as bad.
LoS 2 I never bothered really playing but is apparently worse.

3DS, even XL, hurts my hands so much. I hardly played on it except for Super Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7. I've purchased OoT, Majora's Mask, ALBW, 2 pokemon games, a Kirby game, Yoshi's Wooly World, Mario Maker...can't play any of them because how small the thing is. The Switch on the other hand, is a perfect size. I'm gonna hate play through it, only because I love Metroid.

Isnt there meant to be a 3DS trailer for this on eshop, cant find it. The one under E3 section is 2D. Where the 3D one Reggie mentioned?

Im spanish, and the writer of the game we are making has his brother working there. All the shit during LOTS2 is true. The studio, in true spanish fashion, had shitty people in charge that were doing bad decissions and hurting the rest of the team. Directors with ego and stupidity basically. Here they are not in the crearive process, and also they have been trying to fix themselves during the years they havent release everything. I heard from him that MS and his brother had an important exciting project in hands but I wouldn never had known it was metroid, and he wouldnt have told me, heck, he didnt even want to say it was nintendo.

The thing is, studios can change, and even more when the shitty decissions were not the whole team but a handful of them. Or we havent learn anything from the management of Retro during MP1 until nintendo shaked management.
Not buying a game bwcause of that is stupid.

I find it funny that many people are worrying about MC working on this, when I'm personally more concerned about Sakamoto's involvement. Starting with Fusion the series became more guided, narrow, and focused on plot points which are apparently references to an old manga adaptation. and it all culminated in that mess of Other M when Sakamoto was given full creative reign. He appears to be listed as producer and not director this time, so that nay be a good sign.

But THIS troubles me deeply:

Yeah... and he made sure to mention this both on the Treehouse and on a developer diary video.

The baby is a major character in Metroid and it's a huge part of Metroid 2 and Super Metroid's plot. Don't hang too much on Other M, this game clearly doesn't have ultra long cut scenes that explain every last detail.

Yeah, that bothered me too, but I'm hoping that's just his obsession with Mommy Samus and THE BABY showing and it won't have too much of an impact in the actual game.

I would think enough time has passed for people to take Metroid Other M for what it is, an action focused Team Ninja game. It's a bad Metroid game for sure but it's no longer the last entry in the core franchise. It was a Metroid action game, an experimental blip on the radar and Samus Returns doesn't seem to contain anything from Other M.
