Microsoft Conference: Will they Bring It Like Sony Did?

Higher highs and lower lows I'm expecting. Lots of Kinect BS which they'll make up for with some solid 1st party titles and revealing that they've moneyhatted some meagaton 3rd party exclusive. For the first year or so the install bases will be small enough that taking money to go exclusive could actually be more profitable, and we know MS is more than happy to write cheques to publishers. Given the already established relationship I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they get an exclusive call of duty this year.

I agree! Release the Phil!
tbF419c.jpg

They would be mad not to use him, he is fantastic in press events, knows what hes talking about and is the best man they have in the company to push home the gaming angle of the new machine.

Not this shit again. It's hardly convenient having to keep my 360 connected to my TV alongside my PS3, Durango and PS4, is it? Consolidation and convenience. I dip in and out of all my favourite XBLA games because they're easily accessible - it'll be great if I can still play them on Durango.

Youd be mad to get rid of your 360 so early into the durangos life though, it will be hooked up to my tv for the forseeable future.

Oh whatever, I'm not arguing that. But there's no denying that BC would be a valuable addition - I don't see why BC is a bad thing!?

I still think sony presser wasn't that impressive.

I agree and it shouldn't be hard for MS to beat it... But I have a feeling that the MS conference will be about the same level of quality (or slightly worse).

Funnily enough I think they will do better on the software front than Sony.
I'm expecting a game from Rare, Alan Wake 2, PGR5, a game from Black Tusk and another exclusive game from a 3rd party (Crytek or Epic).
Also expecting EA to show off something good and something exclusive from another 3rd party (maybe timed GTA V exclusive DLC or something like that).

The presentation will be bogged down by lots of Kinect and/or services talk though which will make it pretty dull to watch.

Yeah as a European it´s hard to get excited for a new Microsoft console. Because I´m sure the show will be very service (as in apps) centred. I know the UK is part of Europe, but becuase I live in a country that is only 750 km. away from the UK, and I can´t use a single of the X360 apps, means the UK isn´t really a good indication to what MS is delivering in Europe.

I agree that they still have a lot of work to do in Europe, but technically, in Denmark (I presumed that's where you live based on the website from your profile) you can already use MUZU.TV, WSJ Live and Viaplay (and, of course, all the region-nonspecific apps like Internet Explorer), with HBO Nordics, Livesport.tv, SF Anytime, Comoyo and Miss Teen USA scheduled to appear sometime in the near future.

But again (IMO) Microsoft is going down a totally different road this time around. I see them trying to outgun Apple instead of Sony and Nintendo this ime around. I fully expect them to be very app, kinect, table/smartphone,TV, Cable (entertainment box) interested, instead of trying to cater to the oldtime games lovers. The Microsoft from the beginning of the Xbox an X360 launch time IS GONE. They will go down a totally diferent road than Sony and Nintendo.

Microsoft and Sony are going and will continue going down very similar roads. The only real difference, as far as the intended use of their console goes, is that Sony is going with the old (and I would say outdated) model of "core first, broader later", while I presume that Microsoft will attack on all fronts from the get-go, relying on the already successfully tested (surely for a reason) subscription model which should enable them to offer Durango to the masses at a comparatively low starting price.

Such subsided deals (with cable companies and so on) will also come in very handy when they finally drop the support for the traditional retail software market and go fully digital. If they don't find other channels through which to sell their hardware by then, they might find themselves in trouble because traditional game retailers may simply refuse to carry their hardware, like some did with PSP Go. Cutting them off will also enable them to get full control of their digital marketplace, meaning that they will become much better equipped to compete with the likes of Steam and Apple App Store. The company that establishes those new channels first will be in a hugely advantageous position.

Oh whatever, I'm not arguing that. But there's no denying that BC would be a valuable addition - I don't see why BC is a bad thing!?

If it takes cost away from the machine future power, adds cost to the consumer or means they have to do something to get it to work like the pointless gimped software bc of 360 then i dont want it. I never used it much in any of the other consoles and would rather they put the extra effort and cost into making the future machine better.

It's not a Sony vs Microsoft thing for me, so let's get that out of the way. It's about gaming for me.
You are implying fanboyism with this remark and i'm anything BUT a brand related fanboy. I'll buy anything that gives me enjoyment.

This latest Sony conference convinced me they are on the right track with developers and that they are game minded when it comes to the ps4.
You're partially right about the Vita and tablet stuff (i couldn't care less about that) although there WAS a bit of interesting functionality with iphone and ipad. But i think i will never really use it. I just want to put on the console and start gaming. I don't care much about social media related stuff either, although i understand that might be im portant and nice for others.

I'm hoping MS will do the same: impress me with game related stuff. Sony certainly did that, although i'm hoping for a bit more originality when it comes to games.

I wasnt implying anything, just pointing the strange fact that when you saw the Microsoft conference you described it as:

But last E3s have me worried. All they focussed on was streaming content for the u.s., apps, some weird shit with tablets and Kinect

But when you see the Sony conference you now say:

You're partially right about the Vita and tablet stuff (i couldn't care less about that) although there WAS a bit of interesting functionality with iphone and ipad

I'm just curious how you can watch one conference and that table stuff is so over your head that it's becomes weird, but another conference that literally was talking about the same exact thing and you actually thought it was 'interesting'.

These are your words man. The whole point of MS showing smart glass WAS functionality with Ipads and Iphones. They did it first at last years E3.

But this is weird?

Always honest?

Technically I´m in Denmark.. but not really. I´m in the Faroe Islands. A VERY VERY small country (48.000 people living here). We are owned by Denmark, but a seperate Country.
We just recently got acces to Netflix (lol)..
I know it´s impossible for Microsoft and Sony to service every Country in the world, and I´m OK with that. It´s just that, if rumours are true, Microsoft seems to be going more for an Cable/app - entertainment box. So they are leaving me behind, if they can´t offer me the services that make a nextbox worth owning...

I can't wait to see what they have. I have a lot less confidence in their first party offerings, and based on the leaked specs, the machine itself, but I imagine they'll show a more progressive system on a service level, and maybe some exclusive stuff people didn't see coming. Microsoft never stop selling, they don't rest, if they're doing a stand alone event, it's because they have something well worth showing.

I hated achievements, and what it did game discussion, but it came to define this generation to an extent, and I'm waiting to see whatever that substitute is.

sony brought it?

My sentiment exactly. But for some people, especially those who are already into Sony and their franchises, they really did. Right now they're trying to sell their console to the very specific group of people, one that's relatively easy to please compared to the much more fickle and spoiled broader market, and although their messaging was very predictable and even boring if you're not into their established properties, it was spot-on for the intended audience.

Are you intentionally comparing the console wars to Google, Apple and Microsoft?

As far as the OS marketshare goes Microsoft is chewing up Apple and crapping out Google.
Apple isn't in the "OS business." They only sell complete computers, which use their operating system.

Sony outdoing MS in the insurance market! Whoa!

I understand, especially since I live in Croatia, a small country that's also not officially supported by Microsoft (I use a UK Live account, however, so I have access to at least some functionality). But I don't think they will be abandoning games at all, they're just spreading out. I guess many things will be clearer after this year's E3.

Based off the leaks and rumors; the new Xbox has some nice high level thinking behind it.

Full-on star-trek style voice control is coming. (advanced Siri)
Kinect will actually work like it was supposed to, and games will be made for it.
HDMI INPUT, so you can just go ahead and picture-in-picture your other console.

This is a complete lie, other than the look of the hardware people buy Apple for the OS and the software most of the hardware is the same stuff you find on most PCs.

So yes they do compete in the OS market but you can't just put it on any computer.

They need to improve kinect voice its terrible at the moment.

I can mumble to mine while my Kinect sits next to an operating fan.
Maybe you just need to run the tuner.

However, Kinect should NEVER be used for voice communication with others online.

I surely hope so.. I would like for them to make a "Games"-console .. Not what it looks like right now. The way they use the ram for the OS and the specs (if the rumoured ones are uptodate) points to one thing -> an entertainment box.
And that is also why they aren´t bothered by Sony and the PS4 announcement. It looks like they are going full speed down a new road. A road where there isn´t enough space for all people.. The nextbox will be a big succes if they make it an Entertainment box, but not for me... so I really really hope they will surprise me and prove me and my sinister outlook on the Nextbox and it´s future to be wrong.

This is what they'll bring.

Games will be the same, but functions will be star-trekian...and you can guess how GAF will react.

If they really do bring out Phil Harrison, it'll be like a dagger in the heart of PS. :lol Not due to fanboyism or anything, but because it just ruins his seemingly dedicated-PS gamer persona. I even met the guy in PS Home once (private beta) long ago, along with of course watching his talks/keynotes etc.

His interviews now on Atari and whatnot just go to show he's a slick talker who can probably sell anything, and not really a "loyalist" type like some PS big-shots probably are.

They need to improve kinect voice its terrible at the moment.

They're doing exactly that. According to the leaks, Durango's audio DSP is surprisingly powerful. Apparently, in the early devkits there was one Intel Xeon processor emulating the CPU, and another one fully dedicated to audio processing.

From my brief time on NeoGAF i must say the sony fanboys here are downright rabid.

I'm betting no one here even knew who Mark Cerney was before this conference.... and I recall someone comparing him to Miyamoto in another thread. Geez.

If microsoft came out with some overdone gears of war: Subtitle sequel and forza: subtitle sequel* at thier conference and a kids game like Knack we'd never hear the end of it. It would be all out warfare on Microsoft, but with sony, oh no, a free pass.

*And yes. I know they've already done that.

Lets just say i have a accent, its a mix of scottish and english as i live to the north east of england. Its not so bad on the dash but during games i might as well just give up.

lols really?? guess those bad sales of win8 news have dissapeared. And what about these smartphone sales...

Uh, okay. But they still sell their own computers and that's the only place you can get their operating system. They don't sell their OS to third party vendors or for use outside of their computers, hence, they are not in the OS business.

Regardless, Ballmer still doesn't look good. Apple's revenue & operating income trounces Microsoft's. It's not 2005 anymore.

haha, you ARE implying it. Yet again.

Like i said, i'm not interested in the tablet stuff. There are interesting aspects but i don't think i'll be using it. Smartglass was just as interesting as a tech. But it's all a diversion from what matters to me. Playing the games on the console. Same goes for Sony. Cool stuff with Vita and Tablets, but fuck that shit. It requires people to have more stuff than the console and a controller. That's not to say that there could be interesting functionality.
Microsofts last e3 focused on a lot, but very little on gaming. I hope that will be different in the next presentation.

Trying to call me a liar... djesus christ weirdo. Can't you understadn what i'm saying? Is your father working for MS?

MS focused too much on stuff besides gaming during last E3 (so did Sony by the way). No Sony showed to be completly focused on gaming and devs. I Hope MS does the same.
If you see that as fanboyih, than that problem is completely yours. You're reaching for stuff that isn't there. Seriously.

I've been using Google Now, which is great, but who really uses it as a primary navigation input? Would you? Would anyone?

Kinect 'actually working' is also not a big advantage, sure they will make games for it but at the end of the day those games can never replace the controller games that everyone will be anticipating. Kinect's problem right now isn't its accuracy, its that the content can never really reach that core audience.

All of the UI, sharing, streaming, and immediacy-focused features are the "brought it" part. It's something that will likely become the standard in consoles this generation. I would expect MS to have these same kinds of features or features similar to it, but they better "bring it" and show that they also see where console gaming is going.

It will be huge if they can bring EA on board. I find EA's lack of presence weird. They are some of the first to show off a new gen.

Imagine that EA Sports next gen!

After the last 2 E³ press conferences I gave up on Microsoft. They're way to stuck up in their Kinect efforts. Hope this plays out for them next gen. I however doubt it.

I've been using Google Now, which is great, but who really uses it as a primary navigation input? Would you? Would anyone?

I don't know what Google Now is, but if you're asking whether anyone would use a natural voice interface, the answer is definitely yes, I'm sure most people would if it worked reasonably well (and according to the rumors, they are developing a natural language parser for Durango). Those are precisely the kinds of almost magical experiences that could sell the new Xbox to many people. Personally, that's what I wanted ever since I first watched Star Trek as a kid. Imagine just telling it "Xbox, wake me up every day at 5 AM with Napalm Death's You Suffer on repeat". Priceless!

Not sure how announcing a new Halo, Gears of War, Forza or Fable would be anything other than predictable. I'm interested in MS offering since I didn't like what Sony has showed so far, so I hope there are some promising new IPs, but at the same time, I'm not getting my hopes up.
