New Fantastic Four Trailer

Yeah, I'm just not feeling this movie, and Fox's continued effort to completely fuck up the Dr. Doom character astounds me. Whhyyyyyy????????? The cast doesn't seem to into it either, I mean the best acting job in the whole trailer is by the kid playing young Reed! It just feels very...average. So it looks okay or mediocre, but I can't say I'm excited about this new FF movie at all.

I wish Marvel could get the franchise back and bring a proper Doom into the cinematic universe..:(

Like I said before just copy this and you have Doom.

I partially disagree. Doctor Doom's character is, yes, important... but the man is also a symbol, a vision. It would be like having a guy run around in a bedsheet beating up criminals and calling himself Batman... he can act the part, but he has to look the part too.

Doom's face is iconic. In the comics, when he obtains godhood, it's almost revered like any other religious symbol.

Beyond that, Doctor Doom is simply one of the coolest-looking villains ever created. He SHOULD look the part. His design is so solid that it's barely changed at all since he was created. It's just... iconic. His look is as important as his actions.

Do we know that he doesn't eventually get a mask to wear over his fucked up face? This is an origin story, after all.

that tank gif took me from being casually interested to not being interested at all.

fuck.

To be fair, you can pick a shitty CG scene from just about any great comic movie. Age of Ultron's intro was pretty bad, the DBZ fight in MoS is egregious, the bike vs jet scene in TWS is rough, etc.

This. I don't get what's so hard about that. Why do you need to mess with perfection? I'm not just talking about the look, I'm talking about the origin of Doom as well.

That's the problem. It looks like the fucked-up face is supposed to resemble the mask, hence all the detail & CGI given to ti.

Looks good. I don't know what people are complaining about. Doom looks different and unique and not in a bad way

I sincerely hope this surprises us. But judging by the mixed reactions to the movie's footage at SDCC this year, I'm not sure.

Good post, thanks. I completely understand your hesitation. I mostly agree, but then again, I'd take both old or young Magneto over 95% of MCU villains.

I mainly take issue with "this character doesn't look like the comic character, therefore he is a bad representation of this character". It ignores artistic license and, to an extent, vision. If they get the core of the character, what drives the character to exist--that's the most important, and there's no way of judging that from a trailer.

I understand where you're coming from, but on the other hand, Doom is one of those characters who has a really iconic look. If you take a character like that and completely turn the visuals inside out... you just don't do that, y'know?
Sure, change minor things here and there - make the armor look more hightech for all I care. But cyber zombie Doom violates this whole iconic look, and quite a bit I might add.

Here, I'll give you a converse example: Nobody really cared that in The Avengers, the Hulk was wearing blue pants instead of purple ones. It's a minor detail. The purple pants are part of his iconic comic book look, but they're not integral to the overall look of "monstrous green dude who smashes things".

Now imagine if Marvel would've changed the Hulk to be blue instead of green, and have robotic limbs. Keep him exactly like he was in the Avengers character-wise, but just heavily alter his visual design. Do you think people would've liked it?

See, there's a difference between visual design changes that make a lot of sense, like say the X-Men costumes not being yellow and blue latex, or Magneto's red-purple colour scheme being darker instead of massively bright, or Loki's silly comic look being modernized, etc. and changing a character's design just for the sake of changing it. Which is what this Doom looks like.

I'm not going to write off Doom just yet. I think it would be a bigger misstep if they used his comic book design since it would clash heavily with the tone. If this was a straight fantasy adaptation of F4, the medieval iron man look would work, but this is a more grounded sci-fi adaptation.

Is it bad that I'd rather see a movie just about kid Reed and his crazy experiments? No, I'm serious, a kid mad scientist movie not played for laughs, but played straight with some science fiction thrills. Maybe like a straighter version of Explorers(regarding sci-fi wonder) given some of the danger and edge of WarGames and Cloak & Dagger. Somebody MAKE this fuckin' MOVIE!!!

I don't think it looks bad, I like the cast, it looks like it'll probably have nice visuals, it just looks soooo generic. Haven't we already seen these beats in like 10 other superhero movies?

Man, Doom looks like absolute shit and everybody seems to be phoning it in.

That was a mistake to begin with.

You could have that with a Future Foundations movie and the Richards kids... but that would only happen if the rights went back to Marvel...

Isn't this doom supposed to be some teen blogger hacktivist or something, why the hell would he dress up in a green tunic with golden inlays and...

Actually nvm lol.

His regular look is already unique and different. It's iconic and perfectly encompasses everything about what makes Doom great.

Well, I think that comparison is a LITTLE unfair, because Hulk wouldn't be able to grow robotic limbs :)

A color change? I personally wouldn't give a fuck, but I know comic fans would implode.

The problem is that people are trying to apply logic from the comics to a movie that they haven't even seen yet. We don't know what Doom is like, we don't know why his face is fucked up that way, and we don't know why he isn't wearing a mask.

It's valid to criticize what we've seen so far. It's okay to say "I think that's a bad design". It's not okay to say "they fucked up his character" if what you're really talking about is the visual design.

I don't think it looks bad, I like the cast, it looks like it'll probably have nice visuals, it just looks soooo generic. Haven't we already seen these beats in like 10 other superhero movies?

This, really. The first two trailers, I really liked, but the third one we got (may have been an international trailer) showed that it was fitting a bit more into a conventional story and deflated my hype quite a bit.

I'll still see it, because I'm immensely curious how it will turn out, but I still have concerns.

As someone who's pretty indifferent to Doom/Fantastic Four, I don't find his look as silly as most of y'all, I guess. It's different, but that isn't inherently bad.

I don't think the film will be amazing, but I bet it'll be pretty solid. Honestly, I'm thinking it'll be about par with Ant-Man.

Why does it have to be an origin story? Can't we have a movie where they're already superheroes and this is their first meeting with Doom?

The cgi/explosions look pretty terrible:

I'll play devil's advocate here and point out that I don't think that's the turret part of the tank exploding. I think he throws it into something else that blows up which is why the explosion A) Happens in the first place and B) Make sense for the size.

You also can't really see what's left over since there's fire, smoke, and dirt being thrown up covering the entire area before the shot cuts and we can see the left over pieces.

Could be totally wrong, but I just want to believe they're smarter than that when it comes to stuff like this now a days.

First one looks fine to me, but that second one looks really rough.

First one looks fine, don't even know why it was posted.

Second one looks rough, but I seriously don't think it looks any more rough than the worst from any other superhero movie. For real, the AoU intro has some ass CG.

I'm more concerned by the Reed/stretch effect. I don't know if that will ever look "good".

In 2 weeks? lol no. Even BvS CG looks better than this.

Let's not go nuts.

Usually CGI complaints are about unrealistic physics or bad compositing though. The tank just straight up disappears!

Previews for Ant-Man, I'm talking about behind closed doors type footage and not the trailers necessarily, were all pretty positive from what I remember. And it's been reviewing well. I think the reception at most of the previews on this have been mixed to negative since the jump.

Ant-Man discussions have the luxury of not having to deal with port-begging, too.
