Kreuzader said:I take issue with his assertion that "Smallville gets it right" - there have been scores of episodes with far goofier plots than Superman Returns.
Matrix said:I love the episode where a spirit of a girl takes over Clark and Clark talks like a valley girl.

Shouta said:Am I the only one that seriously liked Dean Cain as Superman? I mean, the TV show was really bad (in retrospect, I used to like it quite a bit when it was showing) but Cain did really well considering how awfully written the show was.
Matrix said:He was pretty good as Clark,as Supes, bleh.
oops hes the greatest Superman ever!
Matrix said:Donners first Superman holds up fine today imo, well except for Otis. What the shit, you guys have no love for classics.
Also Spacey doesnt suck,wtf :\
Plus the reviewer said Donner screwed up,the movie was made in the 70's and had always been regarded as one of the best Superhero movies ever,if not the best, whats that have to do with holding up after all these years.
Donner didnt screw up Superman.
Kabuki Waq said:yea but it seems like this movie is made for the 70s as well + a Crazy wanna blow up the world lex.
The first 2 superman movies are downright cheesy now.
have you Seen The animated Superman stuff from the last 10 years or so? its ****ing awesome thats why this is so dissapointing(if the negative review holds true)
Incognito said:Might be a good movie, but it won't surpass Aquaman's weekend opening.

Donner didnt screw up Superman.
karasu said:Begins has lots of lines that annoy me, all of them are repeats at that. The script is constantly answering itself. Thomas Wayne says something sentimental in the beginning(why do we fall?), Alfred repeats it later. Rachel says something sentimental(it's not who you are underneath), Bruce Wayne repeats it later. Ra's says something to Bruce(mind your surroundings), Bruce repeats it in the end. It does that like six times!
AniHawk said:There were plans to re-release Superman: The Movie in theaters?! I never knew about this.
ManaByte said:Yes they re-released it for the anniversary. It was an extremely limited release in only one or two cities before the DVD came out.
Matrix said:Of course Ive seen the animated stuff *I love it*,but we have all known since Singer took over the movie,it would be based around Donners story and themes.Like I said Id take this version any day of the week over what Burton was going to give us.
Yea some characters irk me *Otis* some of the shit at the end of Superman 2 is cheesy by todays standards, but Donner didnt film guys on roller skates going backwards or talking on the phone while being blown around by Zod super breath, that was all Lesters fault,he cheesed up Supes.
Every superhero movie has cheesy moments, thats a fact, but as a whole I dont find the first two Supes movies cheesy.
Go watch Superman 3/4 and compare it with the first two.
I dont see cheese when I look at the trailers to Superman Returns, sorry if you do.
Kenobi said:You know, for having Dean Cain as your avatar, I can admit that I think I love you...OTISBURG??
I like how there are a ton of positive reviews, and yet there is one person that gives it a negative and a ton of people on this board think the movie is gonna suck because of that one review. Can't make much more sense than that!
Matrix said:Cain as my avatar is a result of a bet I lostYou love Otis!?

Iceman said:"The best Hollywood movies always knew how to sneak a beguiling subtext into a crowd-pleasing story." -- Richard Corliss, TIME MAGAZINE
hmmm. what kind of subtext are we talking about here?
"Bravura technology and dazzling effects can't overcome the film's shortcomings: Standard plot, poorly conceived villain flatly played by Kevin Spacey, and similarly wooden performance from newcomer Brandon Routh (who lacks humor) in all of his roles." -- Emanuel Levy, EMANUELLEVY.COM
how is this a positive review?
Ned Flanders said:Reviews aside, the stifling thing for me with this film is the fact that I don't think that the scale of the plot is fitting of a character of Superman's powers. Luthor has been explored..he's done the kryptonite thing, he's used his cunning to enlist the support of other superpowered beings..he's even scientifically constructed a pawn capable of battling Superman (admittedly in a film that isn't considered canon to Returns, but the point stands). What Superman needed in this film was a Darkseid..someone who embodied the ill will of Luthor but came with a power equally as formidable as Supes. The scope of the dilemma would have been more fitting of Superman's abilities and the action would have been more titanic. Luthor with another doomsday plot just seems pedestrian by now...wait..did I just say Doomsday? Hell even Doomsday would have made for a better foil this go-round than Luthor, again.
*sigh*
All IMHO of course.
Snaku said:After being missing for 5 years, you think Luthor wouldn't have something for Supes? Plus it's a re-introduction of the franchise, so it's key to nail down the basics.
Darkseid and Doomsday could easily be done in the sequel, and would work much better as sequel characters. If you throw in Darkseid, or Doomsday in Returns, what else could they throw at Supes in the next film that'll be more challenging? Not much.
Matrix said:Yea Doomsday would have been a great action popcorn flick with tons of plot...
Giant rock thing and Superman beat themselves up for 2 hours....one dies, the end.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - "Superman Returns," which opens in the United States next week, is receiving knock-out first reviews from critics, with newcomer
Brandon Routh tipped to win over audiences as the latest crime-fighting "Man of Steel."
Hollywood's two trade newspapers, Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter, gave the movie strong reviews, with The Reporter describing it as "a heartfelt Superman movie that plays to a broad audience thanks to an emotionally troubled Man of Steel."
Daily Variety critic Todd McCarthy said director
Bryan Singer had imprinted the Warner Bros. movie with its own personality. "'Superman Returns' is never self-consciously hip, ironic, post-modern or camp. To the contrary, it's quite sincere, with an artistic elegance," he said.
Routh won praise for his apparent effortlessness -- with his resemblance to Superman predecessor, the late Christopher Reeve, not going unnoticed.
The movie's plot has Superman returning to Earth following a mysterious absence of several years. Back home, an old enemy plots to render him powerless once and for all while the superhero's great love, Lois Lane (
Kate Bosworth), has moved on -- or has she?
Newsweek said Singer, who left the popular "X-Men" franchise to make "Superman Returns," did the right thing from the start of "this gorgeously crafted epic" by showing respect for the most foursquare comic superheroes of them all.
The magazine added that "Routh may or may not be a real actor, but he effortlessly lays claim to the iconic role, just as Reeve did. Indeed, he virtually duplicates Reeve in the way he plays Kent as a diffident, awkward Midwestern colt."
"Next to Singer's champagne, most recent superhero adventure movies are barely sparkling cider."
Time magazine said Singer and writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris had revived and revised the story's premise. "The result is an action adventure that's as thrilling for what it means as for what is shows," Time said.
The film is Superman's first big-screen appearance since the 1987 movie "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" starring Reeve.
