what the hell dude, its a wonderful piece of kit, what's the problem.

What were your expecting a teleportation device from mars?
I never watched a teardown video before. The way some people went on about this for the past few months, you'd think it was more than just taking apart a box. In the end, that's all it is. Nothing of consequence was learned today. It's neat to see how they packaged everything, but is this something anyone should base their next-gen buying decisions on? You've seen the hyperbole. In retrospect, it's utter insanity the way some people have conducted themselves regarding this teardown.

Posted this in the other thread, but thought it might warrant inclusion here as well:

Speaking from a marketing and communications perspective, this presentation of this teardown is absolutely perfect.

A calm Japanese man in a smart shirt (all screams 'expert!'), sitting in a clean room, slowly and confidently showing us every important aspect of the Playstation's construction.

No screaming YouTubers. No idiotic, paid off influencers. No need to overplay or exaggerate. Just a straight forward presentation that shows everyone just how well designed the inside of the console is.

And 'liquid metal cooling' will sell an extra few million consoles. Mark my fucking words.

I don't know, maybe you have got your expectations wrong or something, look around you, most of the people here seem to be extremely happy, i think your the only one i see that is mad.

you probably should of watched other videos.

The PS5 heatsink is fucking huge.

Cool to have removable plates, interesting that the M.2 bay is literally internal and hidden under the plate.

So fucking cool to see the teardown finally!

while the heatsink doing its job :messenger_grimmacing_

Agreed, I've always loved Sony's teardowns, pure hardware nerd. Just here it is. No stupid fluff.

not sure these things are related... both serve a different purpose

microsoft invited bunch of tech people few months ago to show the insides if you remember, so that would be the comparison

Now that I'm no longer irate, I think the side panels should prove easy to remove, unless they end up gluing them in place for retail units. I hope we get 1st party or licensed sideplates. I don't quite trust the fit of third party items that don't get official approval. I'm sure someone will end up 3D printing some cool stuff anyway. But I still think going the official route is safer.

Also, the SSD bay takes form factors up to 80mm, which is good future-proofing, as storage density increases.

I think what those folks were hoping for was a "Road to PS5" 2.0 and teardown all in one. Essentially a deeper look at the technology a la Hotchips plus the teardown.

Now while I think the teardown was interesting, especially finally getting to see this elegant cooling solution, I doubt this is the deeper teardown the people you're thinking of were expecting or hoping for.

Never really looked at a PS4 one but that did look a monster! :)

The PS4 was ridiculously dinky in all models. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Side note, don't fret my Xbox brothers, what matters is that the systems have what they need to operate in a reliable fashion long-term. I think they both have that. (Team blue completely whipped our asses in the cooling engineering department this time though).

Yup. Just make custom black plates instead of a whole SKU for it for example. $$$

I like the idea that instead of entire Limited Edition next gen consoles, you may be able to get Limited Edition games that just have the swappable plates instead. Makes a lot more sense than people trying to collect a bunch of consoles. Plus people could probably create some kind of a frame to display plates that aren't currently on the console itself. I think it's gonna be a solid marketing point.

See, I don't even think that's the case. I just think Msft have gone with a pretty standard method of cooling, whereas Sony have gone balls out with it. Ass whipping only really matters if one seriously outperforms the other, but I doubt that'll be the case overall. It's just that Sony are pushing more boundaries - which kinda makes sense given that they're far more concerned with console generations than Msft now.

Pretty much. I'll own up to that. Anyway, I'm over it. It was just a bit of system shock at discovering what all the hullabaloo was about. Live and learn.

True, true. That's what I'm saying, I'm sure the XSX cooling will be performant (MS has been so careful with that post 360 fat), but no question Sony pushed further. With the tradeoff being the volume of the box.

Have you noticed the ease with which the casings are removed to be able to extract the accumulated dust in the respective compartments without causing the loss of the guarantee?

Thus opening the doors to custom cases...?

YES SIR!! Cant wait for black cases. Swapping the originals out immediately.

YES SIR. Cant wait for Black cases. Sorry.
This is the dumb shit people were moaning about....what a bunch of knobs. It's a computer....whoopty fucking do. I thought these teardowns were supposed to reveal something interesting, but it's just taking apart a computer. You can do that in your house. The packaging is different, but the components are the same. I took apart an 8086 when I was 10 years old, and a Sinclair when I was 6. This was not worth the noise that some people were making. I almost want to go back through this thread to find all the wankers that were complaining about not getting this video, just so I can put them on ignore. You are horrible and miserable people. This is a big, fat nothingburger.

I'm only getting a PS5. Never owned an Xbox. Owned every PS ever made, save for the Vita. This was not worth people crying and spreading FUD. This is what I see once or twice a year, when I take my laptop apart to swap drives or clean the vents. This teaches us nothing useful. Meanwhile, Sony has shown a number of next-gen games, which is about the only thing we can actually engage with, and manipulate. I'm literally dumbfounded by how high a priority some posters in this thread made this video. This ranks somewhere down near backwards compatibility on my list of important next-gen information. I learned how computers were put together when I was a child. This shouldn't be revelatory for anyone old enough to post on the internet.

Brah Im with you on this.Dudes were capping for this so hard. And really its just meh. The games always take front & centre. I said it before the bread & butter has been done games, price, date. Sony did it. Dudes where still hypin up tear down as most important.

This is ok ,it was cool. But don't know why dudes were capping hard for it. Dudes were talking like Sony owed them this. But hey it is ,what it is. Whatever makes people happy.

Im just waiting on my confirmed pre-order now. Its all just banta at this stage.

Haven't watch the video yet.

Anything interesting? Liquid metal interface between the apu and cooler was kinda already known. It definitely ain't going to sell millions.

Any information on when we will get the spec for compatible ssd's?

We’ve implemented a new Trophies level calculation system that is more optimized and rewarding. Players will progress quicker through the early levels, and levels will increase more consistently. Platinum trophies will count more toward your level progression, making them even more valuable.

I'm glad they increased the levels and changed the calculation system. I felt like I've been stuck on my current trophy level forever.

There are 4 screw holes inside the bay to install 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 M.2 form factor SSDs. So we can pick from 4 different sizes, and there appears to be some room inside the bay incase the drive is a bit larger. Bay is under the white plate. No idea when we will find out what drives are supported, but going off this look, seems obvious that drives like the Samsung 980 Pro will be supported. They will easily fit inside.

The choice to go with third party SSDs was a very good one. They learned their lesson about proprietary storage with the Vita disaster. It's going to be pretty damn cheap to upgrade your Ps5 storage in the future, once they all start competing with one another on price. And with millions of Ps5s out there, that competition will heat up very quickly.

He won’t be concerned even a day before release lol
I don't know what is more concerning at this stage.

1. That we have only seen a few titles running on the series X like Dirt or Yakuza but nothing else (although we are supposed to see them all later this month, its still strange)
2. That we have seen some games, but not a single PS5 console or review unit sent to anyone, a teardown, or received detailed information about the console (not sure when this is happening, but the showing in japan in controlled settings seems strange this close to launch)

Edit, spoke too soon!

Concern trolling at its finest. Amazing.

Microsoft have been on vapour cooling for a while. To call them conventional is to dismiss the work that they did in vapour cooling for the surface devices.
