Nexus 7 2013 |OT| No SD card edition

This is a bit personal, but oh well. I will just be frank here.

I was on a porn site earlier today(youjizz) and while looking for a video the yj site suddenly went away and a popup came up saying "Your Google Nexus 7 may be infected with a virus. Click here to remove."

It looked like it was just a dumb popup that wanted me to click it in order to actually get a virus, so I just exited out really quickly and put the tablet down. This was a few hours ago.

This is my first tablet, I'm new to android, and I thought that this already had an antivirus on it. Should I be worried?

Unless you're installing an app, you won't get a virus. It's just spam. Make sure "Install from unknown sources" is turned off. It's either in the Security settings or the Developer settings; I forget which.

Yes, it was just a dumb popup.

I personally feel like I know what not to click and install, and it's not as easy to get a virus or spyware into Android as it is on Windows, so I don't have AV software, but a lot of people use the app Lookout. I have absolutely no idea what it does and can't personally vouch for it.

Okay now this definitely deserves its own thread!

This one time, my computer crashed and the screen turned blue.

Then a line of text said "Windows stopped an illegal operation."

Is the FBI coming for me?

Alright ... so now I have all 3 units in hand...

unit #1: too late for exchange

wireless charge doesn't work
no dead pixel
gps used to get signal then lock up after a while (fixed via new update)

unit #2:

wireless charge works
2 stuck pixels
gps does NOT work at all out of box, and the update has yet to be pushed to it so I had to do manual update to get gps working

unit #3:

wireless charge works
no dead pixels
same gps situation as unit #2
the very first system update fails to push to the unit or install... whatever i had to manually flash the latest get gps working

I'm willing to bet that Google would get at least 50% less returns if they just push the latest update as the first time, system update. Out of box experience would be terrible if I wasn't going through these units before handing them off to the actual owners.

i'm not gonna laugh. we all went through this the first time we looked up porn or used a computer

Thanks fellas.

Again, I figured it was a dumb pop-up, but until a few months ago I never had a smart phone, never had a tablet. I'm not used to this kind of stuff, so I wasn't sure if they even had anti-virus things in there.

Sorry if my question was stupid. Figured I'd want to make sure.

Last night my touchscreeen was being a little unresponsive, I hope it's nothing to worry about. I still don't have the latest firmware.

Also my battery really isn't lasting that long, I've turned a lot of stuff off but media server is still taking up a good 50% of the battery.

Does anyone have this case: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00E4OKXPU/

I currently have a £2 cheapo job and it's just not cutting it. The stand is just terrible so I want one that actually props up properly, plus this one has a hand strap at the back which will make holding it 100% more comfy.
I ordered that case, should have it on Tuesday, I'll let you know.

Edit: I take that back, I got it today lol. Thanks Amazon! Anyway so far I like it. It feels sturdy, looks nice and was cheap.

Played around with the new Nexus at Best Buy today. Yes, I think this will be my next tablet. Just need to save up for few months. Might as well put it on my Christmas wish list.

How's the stand? Does it feel solid when using it? The one I have ATM feels like it would fall over if you blew on it.

You completely misunderstood me here

Thanks to the others for pointing out what I was referring to. Funny thing is, I owned a mini. Just didn't recall it having that kind of battery life; though to be fair, I never bothered to check the stats either.

You know one thing I haven't seen discussed much and I'm unclear on is how the multiple users things work. Can you set it up for two people so that when a person signs in, his respective Google account is logged in to all the apps? Or is it just to restrict app usage to users?

Completely seperate. My wife and I share, and it's practically like have two different Nexus 7s, but just in one.

So, my touchscreen stopped responding entirely after a reboot. Guessing I'm screwed but is there anything I can try to get it working until I get a chance to return this thing? (it's going back either way)

I ordered the Portenzo Hardback. Should be here soon. Hopefully it'll be as good as I hope. I can't be bothered buying a bunch of $5 chinese cases on amazon.

Engadget reporting the 7 coming to Japan this week and the Japanese LTE model in September. I hope this means the US LTE model is soon.

I played with the 32GB 7 at Best Buy this weekend and love it. I can't wait to grab the LTE one. Would have loved to have it for my trip this weekend to the lake to keep up on stuff.

I'm coming to Usa soon (I'm from the uk) and was thinking of picking up the 32 gb version of this, since it's only £172 over there compared to the £200+ over here. Is it worth it? Seems like some people have been having problems and that'd be a pain in the ass to sort out when I'm back over here. Alternatively, I could get the old nexus 32gb or the Samsung galaxy tab 8 gb for £179 over here

:-S I kinda want it for the 12 hour flight, but want the best for my money...

If you can't easily return it for a replacement then I wouldn't risk getting a Nexus 7 2013 yet.

It looks like excellent tech but there are way too many issues being reported to make it a safe buy.

I'd get one. I have had zero issues. There is a whole thread on XDA about people NOT having any issues out of the box.

I've had mine about a month now, no issues.

Negative posts on forums will always seem to outweigh those without issues. I've learned not to sweat it and just take the plunge (when reviews are good etc).

I love my N7 2nd gen and would recommend it for anyone looking for a smaller tablet. I just got JSS15Q now btw (Canada).

Eh. People with issues are the one's you're likely to hear the loudest. I've had absolutely zero problems with mine, but I don't mention it because it'd be kinda weird to randomly post "my nexus works great." And this is the case with a lot of stuff like this.

Although, I'm doing that now.

Negative will out weight positive posts in forums but relatively to other devices the complaints is high. Take it at your own risk. I wouldn't get it until they push out the update to *ALL* the devices instead of having your stuff half broken not knowing if it's fixable by software.

I was absolutely bricking it after reading this thread while waiting for my Nexus 7, but in the end I had no problems at all. There's always a risk of problems with electronics but it does seem a little higher with this device.

It's useful if you're walking around. I don't use it much but it's nice to have.

What about reading while you're laying down? Like holding it above your face while laying down? Or even just sitting in a chair with your hand through the handle thing.

That's what I want to know. I use mine in bed a lot but it's a bit uncomfortable to hold. I'm mainly looking to buy the Moko for the strap and stand.
