There's no real reason why you couldn't just jump in with David Tennant. That said, I felt that the Eccleston season was the best overall season of New Who in terms of its overall storyarc and a finale that, by RTD standards, wasn't overly ludicrous,

No, the Daleks running a TV station full of reality shows wasn't ludicrous at all.

It's a show about a time-travelling phone box - the whole concept of the show is ludicrous. When it tries to be 'serious' is usually when it fails hardest (see the Christopher H Bidmead era for details).

Well, not overly ludicrous. I wasn't yelling at the screen or anything. Now, the Series 3 finale, woo boy.

Dr Zhivago, I realize Doctor Who has a long tradition of outright goofiness, but I still prefer it when the show tries to be at least reasonably serious or, you know, not completely incoherent. Man, I'm so glad that RTD is gone.

I fail to see how the physic power of the entire world couldn't be used to de-age The Doctor, dissolve his cage and momentarily make him invincible. Cop out? Pfft.

Thats what ive hated most about Dr Who recently, he gets into a crazy situation and your wondering how he can get out and BANG something magical happens, such a cop out.

Im hoping with a new writer this will stop happening. Dont get me wrong ive loved all the episodes so far, im just sick of getting dissapointed in the last 5 minuites of some of them.

Shows like Hustle which have clues and hints towards how the main guys pull off the amazingness is really good tv, hopefully the new writer will have a more practical solution for the problems he puts the Dr in.

That actually didn't bother me at all. What didn't make sense to me was that the Doctor had somehow planned that all out a year in advance.

Semi-unrelated, just got into the Torchwood miniseries, and it's fucking brilliant. I actually kinda liked Torchwood, aside from the "we're an adult show so here's some sexy naughty bits." Plus the team, aside from Gwen and dead Owen, were awful. (Ianto is decent in the miniseries). Best non-miniseries episode for me is "Meat."

Can you enjoy the Torchwood miniseries even if you haven't watched the show at all? I always hear people praising it, but am not so sure if I'd like it without having any familiarity with the characters (beyond Captain Jack).

Yes. I barely watched any Torchwood (and hated every minute of it), then I watched the miniseries and loved it.

I'll give it a spin then -- what is it that makes the miniseries so compelling?

same here. Didn't like the standard series - felt like it was trying too hard to be 'adult', which ended up being childish

Its just nice and tense and builds nicely. Some nice stuff around Captain Jack being immortal, and its pretty brave in the subject it chooses and how it carries it off, IMO

Apparantly he signed a 4 year deal...but as he's an unknown I'm sure the BBC have a jettison clause should the public not take to him - ala Colin Baker. Perhaps it's all a bluff and he dies in the first episode and turns into Pattison Joseph!

"I'm sorry Mr Smith, but the Doctor wasn't in and JLB credit is calling in your TARDIS loan"

What didn't make sense was how Martha figured out to travel the world and spread the gospel of the Doctor so that he could formulate his plan from him whispering a two-second completely-unrelated message to her ear.

It's serialized, fast paced and has some fun/intense action scenes. The building conspiracy and mystery elements actually pay off in a genuinely surprising way as well. It's also 'dark' and 'mature' in a way that season 1 and 2 wished they could be.

Smith doesn't interview well - despite the fact he's clearly a friendly, quirky and genuinely interesting dude.

I reckon he was just nervous, this was his first public interview since getting the role right?

Also what is the torchwood mini series?

A five part mini series that came out last year.

Really liking Smith's characterization of the Doctor, especially his mannerism. To be honest, I was really put of by his looks at first, I think it's the lack of eyebrows.

Can't wait till the new series. Finished Torchwood, mixed feelings over it, now I might go back and watch some of my least favorite DW episodes and dissect them.

This much I can agree with. Beyond the rather terrific camera direction in the scene his nervous (In a ADD, over-eager, jittery sense), arrogance came off as rather appealing; his constant exited, expressive gestures sold it.

Yeah, while I'll miss Tennent, Smith seems to be a perfect direction for the role, less confident and more quizzical attitude. I just hope Pond doesn't steal too much of the spotlight. Pond and Tennant (due to RTD) would have been awful together, much like Ryan in the Dead Planet.

Michelle Ryan would have been awful alongside any Doctor. Not entirely her fault - her character was completely unappealing and the script was a turd no one saw fit to polish.

Ah yeah I assumed that was the case, but can anyone tell me where it was broadcast? The series name? How to find it?
It was called Children of Earth and it was broadcast on BBC One.

I liked that Karen Gillan said Amy isn't some doe-eyed companion like Rose or Martha, and that she challenges the Doctor as kind of his equal.

Sounds like an attractive version of Donna. :lol

Woweee. Both of those are fantastic, I'm really looking forward to Fnarg. Nice to see a general change of direction for the show whilst still being the same, and Matt looks to be perfect for the role.

I'm getting a bit Who nerdery now, been listening to the soundtracks today. And a bit of Torchwood's soundtrack, because although the show itself is shoddy, some of the tracks in Series 2 were fantastic.

Indeed...only 1 week! Brief glimpse of the TARDIS console in that one to boot. Hartnall on the Doctor's psychic paper was a nice touch.

I think he said that was his library card. He must have forgotten to get a new one after he regenerated... ten times.
