First tragedy, then farce.
So, I need to watch the final two specials with Tennant except fucking Netflix thinks it is fun not to stock them despite being well beyond the time frame in their agreement with WB.

Season 1 was mostly bad with a few genuinely good episodes (Small Worlds, Out of Time), I liked season 2 a lot more, and overall I was extremely impressed with the Children of Earth miniseries.

Basically everyone seems to think Children of Earth > season 2 > season 1.

I would have to agree with those rankings.. I liked S1 for the most part but there were some really worthless bits in it.

GAF, is this series going to be a good entry point for a newcomer? Having recently moved to London made me realize that I might have been missing out on this piece of UK goodness.

Rewatched "Idiot's Lantern" the other day. I thnk it might be one of the best episodes. Creepy imagery, some REALLY funny lines and a good side story.

I'm sure it will be.
For the last couple pages we have been trying to compose a list of 13 or so episodes available on netflix watch it now that could help people get caught up if they really want to. Still, I think its goona be designed as a decent starting point.

In DWM, Moffat said he's dispersed a few "starting points" throughout the season for latecomers. That obviously includes the first episode.

I would suggest watching the Eccelstone/Tennant run just because it is worth seeing at some point. Pretty solid stuff.

But really they seem to have tied up all the loose ends to the story arcs in that series.

Rose was pretty much the driving force for the 4 seasons and that is finished. The only other recurring characters (Mickey, Martha) will show up in Torchwood if anywhere at this point.

I can't think of anything else that would carry over to the new series. Anything major they did that affects long time characters/enemies will just be retconned like it is every other time the doctor killed off the daleks.

As, I've said, is Amy, and she gets to wear all these small skirts, which I will admit was very cold, but also very cool. They originally wanted to put me in trousers, but I did say I'd like to wear a skirt because – you'll understand when you watch it

What a woman!

They should take a hint outta the classic series DVDs and call it The Matt Smith Years - Year One.

But what if he's an Eccelstone and is only on one season.

I have to wait until April 17th for the new season to kick off on BBC America. Much better than SciFi's schedule of "we'll show it to you at some point"

SERIES 5!! Somebody start a new thread!

Just to keep the rumourmongering going a bit further...

The synopsis has been deleted - probably nothing to worry about there, might have come out early (schedules for that week shouldn't be appearing until next Wednesday), but more significantly:

"Series 5" has been replaced with "New Series".

Retroactively call it The Matt Smith Year in all material post-regeneration. It's not that difficult to fix.

Pffft nobody likes numbers any more. They should just give each series a title based on the main story arc.

So far the new series would be:

Doctor Who and the Meme
Doctor Who and the Cybus Cybermen
Doctor Who and the Hyperactive Primer Minister
Doctor Who and the Stolen Planets
Doctor Who and the End of Time (and other stories)
Dcotor Who and the
Talented Writer

Also, BBC's /programmes/ system won't allow it to be called "Series 1" as there already is a Series 1 in their system. That's a technical thingy, so don't take that as fact.

Press Launch is today with first screening.
From next Wednesday, you can see the first minute of the episode on the BBC Red button service.

Is that what they call a 'burn'? Also, thats hardly a spoiler.

Doctor Who will return for a sixth series in 2011, it has been confirmed.

Executive producer Piers Wenger also announced a Christmas special for this year, penned by showrunner Steven Moffat.

Matt Smith will be returning for his second full series as The Doctor.

Shooting on the special and the 13-episode sixth run will begin early July in Cardiff. Filming on the fifth series wraps this Saturday ahead of transmission on BBC One at Easter.

No surprises, but nice to get confirmation.

I know it was only twenty seconds but my God, that first episode looked ridiculously awesome.

With Moffat at the reins, I think, uh, that might finally be handled properly. Or, as before, it might be crushingly disappointing.

Do we know who the girl is in the 20 sec clip?
young Amy Pond?

You might wanna correct your spoiler tag. Like, sharpish.
But yes, she does bear a striking resemblance. Little bit of a throwback to The Girl in the Fireplace.

Hopefully the Cybermen are our creepy universe versions as Moffat washes away the bad taste of RTD's ones.
This season seems a bit like Tom Bakers first season in design...more alien Doctor...lots of old enemies to reassure the audience...I wouldn't expect to see any reoccuring enemies next season.

I've got more entertainment out of these interviews then I have all the Tennant specials. Crackling energy about Smith and Karen, when Tennant (bless 'im) last couple it was looking awfully tired.

Yeah, I think Tennant moved on at just the right time.
