Oh god, Amy is just perfect <3

Great script too, nice introduction to the characters, and the TARDIS looks amazing. Much better than the dingy polystyrene of old.

Thumbs up.

Fucking amazing. The plot was pretty standard, but the execution was perfect. I love the new Doctor, he's batshit insane.

I love the BBC for giving us that extra long trailer too :D

People like the new Doctor? I thought he was terrible :lol

I loved him, to be fair when Ecclestene changed at first I hated Tennent. After I while I loved him and realised my prejudice was stupid. So I didnt have that going into this and gave him a fair chance to both impress me or piss me off. I loved it so far though.

And to be fair, what defines the Dr isnt the actor but the way the writers portray him. The new guy is doing an amazing job.

I hate the fact that the old 'cast' seems to be replaced by this new set of people. Im going to miss all them guys. I really dont like Ponds Boyfriend but didnt mind Rose's :lol

Didn't like that. Pretty horrible stuff. :( Seemed like a RTD greatest hits megamix of nonsense and misuse of technology - did even RTD abuse the abilities of a mobile phone as bad as that? Hopefully Moffat was going for the type of episode that's pulled in the punters in the past before his usual mindbending twisty excellence begins in later episodes.

Worst version of the theme and probably the naffest title sequence yet in the shows history - how hard can it be to get simple things like that right. TARDIS interior was a mess.

Liked Smith though, especially when he got his costume at the end. And the future episodes roll looks great. Not my cup of tea at all, but then I'm a Hinchcliffe era / Season 18 fan, so I automatically sneer at any humour in my Who (unless it's Tom's jellybabies).

I bet you're the kind of guy who thinks Doctor Who should be more like LOST.

I had problems at first, it being an introductry episode and attempting for a spectacle episode for the new season - but unlike RTD it didn't suck. Misuse of tech? Hardly. It was actually very simple, and it avodied even buzz words. He didn't even write a virus to crash the aliens - just to catch attention to the source of the virus that he was writting. That's almost logical!

Also great bit of camerawork for "how the Doctor's mind works" as well.

Its the best way to move forward

I was getting tired of that old guy and Donna Character was starting to grate

Wooo! Fantassstic episode.

Except the footage of the titles, should be more like the vortex in that trailer.

But that's about all I can say in terms of flaws.

Dude, everything got replaced, not just the old cast. Moffat really trying to distance himself from RTD in every field.

Different intro, different music, different font, different tardis, green sonic screwdriver etc. No way does he want to keep any of that baggage.

I actually liked Donna, but to be honest on the most part Donna her dad bored me. Im more upset at losing people like the main Torchwood dude/ Mickey/ Rose etc

RTD's storylines might have sucked, but I loved his characters, so losing ALL of them is a blow.

Never liked any of the season openers, still was better then Rose and the Adipose one - thought the plot was a bit generic, seemed a bit of a rip off of the Judoon episode where they are searching for a prisoner. Wasn't expecting to like this one to be honest, but even I was taken aback by how bad the new theme/titles are...shockingly awful like one of those shit Youtube Dr Who title sequences some 14 year old kind knocks up with a copy of 3D Max. I guess I'll have to wait a few more years before I get my glass & chrome hi-tech TARDIS interior - it's just a bit too busy on the eyes.

Moffat said as recently as last week that he'd be absolutely up for doing a story with Captain Jack meeting the Eleventh Doctor if the timing is right, so I wouldn't write him off at least. Given the knowing way it was said I think it's a cert, in fact.

I'm sorry, you're asking if there's a TV repeat of *Doctor Who*? In the UK?

7pm Sunday BBC3, 9pm Friday BBC3. And probably another thirty repeats before Christmas.

Thank you, timer set for tomorrow. I've never watched the show on TV much, I just blasted all the DVD's recently, so I have no previous knowledge of their scheduling. Thanks for the help.

Agreed, the casting was amazing, the fact that theyre family makes a lot of sense now :lol

He loses points for the whole food scene in my opinion, he gains them back for not liking beans though.

APZonerunner thanks for the info, Captain Jack would be amazing to have back, I do sort of feel like we've had his story so I wonder what they can do with him.

He's still got some missing years to account for, remember?

Missing years that were only mentioned in an episode Moffat wrote.

Just sayin'.

Missing years, care to fill me in?

I remember River Song and her book, but she mentioned Jack Sparrow? I also think it was nice seeing Smith open the Tardis with a click of his fingers, subtle but so awesome if you think about that River Song said about the Dr she knew.

Also am I the only one who got a Mario 64 vibe from this episode?
Oh wow, I didn't click when watching, but now you mention it... :lol Awesome.

New logo and theme tune are awful, but the rest was surprisingly good for the part. I was expecting not to like Smith, but he actually did a very good job. Not quite as good as Tennant, but miles better than Eccleston.

I guess I can expect much better things from this series now they've finally ditched Davies. Only worry was Smith, but he seems up to the task.

Everyone old needs to stay the hell away...

Except Professor River Song, Sally Sparrow, Madame de Pompadour, or Captain Jack (if we must have one old regular)

Is it me or the New doctors seems faster, probably because of the lack of Trench coat

anyway, I love his new look and can't wait to Halloween with it

I thought that was a side-effect of the rebirth; as his regeneration had not completed yet
no TARDIS key

As for the episode; I thought it was fab - I've disliked most of the recent DW episodes and though David Tennant's finale wasn't very good at all. But this seemed to harken back to the old days and wasn't so self-serious

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doctor_Dances :

"The Doctor uses the ship's nanogenes to heal a wound while Jack explains that he went renegade on the Time Agency when they stole two years of his memories."

That's never been accounted for. If they need an angle to bring him back, that's certainly a way they could do things. Given it's strongly implied that he may have done some unpleasant stuff...

I liked it. It was good, and young Amy was adorable.

As for the intro animation - I suspect the rest of the series will have a vortex more like that of the trailer. I assumed the stormclouds and lightning from the intro today were due to the whole Tardis crash landing thing.

I had to wait an hour because some bugger was watching football and I couldn't get at the HD feed. I thought it was tremendously good, especially the new Doctor and companion. The plot even made some sort of sense. I'm also diggin' all the mad shit in the Tardis.

I also get the feeling it's only gonna get better from here.

Recording Confidential in HD to watch later.

Moffat also said that while drafting some plans for series two he had to consult RTD about something, I believe. So... perhaps... Especially with Torchwood set to continue/potentially get a US offshoot which still has Jack in it, it could be checking for clashes as RTD is still helming that show and Sarah Jane.

I really liked it. I certainly see how Moffat was so drawn to Smith due to the tone he brings being spot-on.

I kind of...bought that he convinced people to follow him with his little speeches. It's kind of what the Doctor does, but it's not something every Doctor pulls off - even if they are good Doctor's, like Tennant.

I didn't like the little 'mind of the doctor' moment in practice as it seemed to drag on a lot longer than it should have due to being all under-bench, upside down camera flashy, but I thought the concept of putting a point to the fact he notices everything was quite good. Same with the Tardis, great concept but quite fiddly and busy in motion.

I actually noticed this myself. I doubt the intro will be any different to be honest (seems too co-ordinated) - but it's definitely the old TARDIS flying down that new Vortex - no St. John's Ambulance logo and it's the darker shade of blue. I wonder if that'll change or that's just the mill reusing the old TARDIS CGI model to save money?

Ghost

Chili Con Carnage!
All Hail Moffat

:D

Awesome start to the new era, so often in RTD times the major episodes were ones to be feared, 50 minutes of campy shit with 10 minutes of really good stuff mixed in, this one struck a better balance and did the fun stuff right.

Think Smith is doing a good job, he has to riff on Tennant because the show is so popular now, and theres a lot of that for sure, but he also comes across a bit ruder, a bit less easily amazed, subtle changes but just enough to make it interesting.

Amy seems perfect too, so glad she wasn't really a policewoman, that would have been dull.

Yep, Amy is gorgeous.

Smith is great. For the first ten minutes I was unconvinced, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Plus, it's straight after a regen, he's always a bit zoned out.

Not sure on the new Tardis interior, but sure it'll grow on me.

Overall, bar a few Who-stupidisms, I thought it was a really strong opening.
