Persona 5 Review Thread

Not being able to use the share button is such a huge oversight for this game. Japanese developers/publishers really need to quit it with this outdated mentality.

Was pretty close with my mc guess of 95. Yeah waifu discussion has no place, while it can be fun to discuss which character you like, it can get creepy or heated pretty quickly so best avoid it altogether.

It's a volume thing. The waifu/husbando thread is quite possibly going to be longer than the OT, perhaps by a very significant margin.

Similarly we've had split singleplayer/multiplayer OTs for games where the multiplayer and singleplayer are very distinct, but people want to talk about both in large volume, and feel focusing each thread would help.
Now, that's more understandable. But I guess the question remains that, how should one know which thread he/she should post in.

If I wanna talk about a character arc or S-Link, which thread should I post in? If I'm talking about the story and characters of the game in the OT, no doubt I'll have to bring up their characterizations in S-Links and that probably makes things complicated, when we had two different threads for one game.

It's a lot easier to make that distinction in SP and MP threads. But in a single-player game like Persona, a lot of these stuff blend together so it's harder to distinguish them.

If you tallied up the review scores of every game, I doubt 5 would be the average. Average is probably a high 6 or low 7.

That has nothing to do with averages though. Game scores (metacritic) are an average of all games that actually got reviews. So as I said IGN may not review "ride to hell : retribution" because they may say "oh its a waste of space"... so there's an inherent bias in the scores there as they are recorded, but that doesn't change the actual score. IF they review a game then you are assuming it's a relatively mainstream game that is worth reviewing... then if they give it a 5 they may be saying well it was reviewed but it's not that good, average. However if you trust IGN as a source then you are already dismissing any of the 1/10 games they just outright ignored.... and I'm sure they ignore tons. In the end the score is no different.
Someone else like I believe Angry Joe says hey I review all sorts of games and I'm saying a good game is 7/10, so then metacritic is capturing all those 7/10 and they go into the aggregate. if he gave GTA V a 7/10 and then Zelda a 7/10 they are both "good" to him and metacritic shows this as they still score highly overall, he isn't dragging down "his " average.

Not for test scores or it is not.

60% is the lowest passing grade and really normally you need to get 70% for at least a mediocre score.

If we grade games same as tests which is what most publications are doing then under 60% is bad, under 70% is mediocre, 70-79% average, 80-89 good to great and over 90% amazing.

I already stated this would happen in an earlier post. Useless information as no that is not correct. 50% is a pass in many jurisdictions. 70% is literally a B or good in some jurisdictions... Random scoring systems provide no evidence on what is considered "good". what matters is there is a system and it can be compared to itself. So as I said on metacritic if one site consistently gives "good " games a 7/10 they are keeping that metacritic where it should be relative to their score. if they suddenly give Zelda 1/10 and ride to retribution 10/10 it would probably be suspect and considered an odd, even broken system.

yeah, no idea what they're trying to protect. the other recent example i can think of is tales of berseria, yet you can find entire let's plays of both the english and japanese vo on youtube. the opening is on youtube. etc. you can spoil shit by taking shitty phone pictures or recordings and people who professionally capture footage obviously have the means to do so.

It's not impossible, but there are 2 or so reviews that need to be added that will bring it to a 93. Still a great score! It's what Persona 4 Golden got. We'll see if any reviews after that get added and bump it back up, but I don't foresee it leaving the 90s.

Are you being purposefully obtuse?

If you're talking about the game, it's relevant.

If you're talking about how much a certain character turns you on and how much you want to bone them, that won't be necessary.

I liked Ann's character a lot but Makoto was much more useful in battle. I used Ann mostly for healing early game but she became a poor man's Morgana later on so I settled on MC/Ryuji/Makoto/Morgana for most of the game.

It's really disappointing when you don't like your favorite characters in your party.

Happened to me with FFXIII. Sazh and Vanille are my favorite characters in the game, and they're actually pretty good, especially Sazh, but I just absolutely hate their attack animations.

I doubt Makoto will stay in my party for too long, that motorcycle thing is incredibly stupid.

Why ?

It may easy end at 94, 95, and of course in the 90s. please.

I'm currently expecting a 92 which is a really good score, especially with reviewers being more harsh these days.

No, unlike you being purposefully aggressive, I just don't wanna get banned or juniored over some misunderstanding. It has happened before, and I'd like to avoid that.

Reread the part you quoted. Never mentioned 7/10. If it's getting to a point here 8.5 is considered a lackluster score, then there's something off.

7/10 makes sense for average, in a way. And I never said 5s should be average. The thing is, our consideration of average is changing, but our view on scores is not.

7s used to be average, but since so many games are able to hit above that, is it okay to consider 8s and 8.5's the new average? Or do we scale the rankings to reinstate 7s to be average again?

My problem isn't that "5 isn't considered average" (which I never said or believed). My problem is that if people are freaking out about an 8.5 being average or just "fine I guess", then there's something really wrong. We're changing our definitions of what average is, and the number scales are becoming obsolete.

If we are parsing words here, then I never claimed you specifically said those things, I argued against the logical basis of your summary dismissal of the current system, which appeared to be centered on a lack of consideration for the full scale of the scoring system.

In my defense, your specific statements...

If people don't see or consider a difference between a 5/10 or a 1/10, the system sucks and should be thrown the hell out.

and also...

a 7/10 in today's time may have been an 11/10 a couple generations ago

...would indicate a belief that 5 should be something other than bad and for 7 to be something more than average.

I feel that my inference was fair given what you wrote, but if you didn't mean to imply that, then that is my mistake.

Again, I agree with the sentiment you expressed about avoiding a numerical scale in favor of criticism and critique. Any numerical value is going to be arbitrary.

But I would argue that it is nonsense to say the current system is bad because people don't distinguish between 1 and 5, or that a 7 today would have been an 11 in previous generations. People were already getting bent out of shape about 8's over a decade ago.

I didn't mean to come off as aggressive, it's just you've been going at this for awhile.

If you don't know what waifu wars are then you don't need to worry about it.

I'm not sure when I'll have the time to play this, but my god, it looks amazing. Day one to support the devs, even if I don't get around to playing it initially.

Makoto is actually pretty useful in your party. In fact I'd say she's one of the best characters you can have in your party: attack skills hit like a truck, defense is pretty decent and her support skills saved my life many times. Amazing character.

Come on, you should very well know what constitutes "waifu talk" given your previous posts in Persona and Mass Effect threads.

And if you can't figure it out, just don't post in either thread and not worry about it.

I did a gameplay tier list way back when I finished the game.
Makoto was one of the characters at the top of it.
If I remember correctly Ryuji, Makoto and Haru were my go to team gameplay wise. I will say though I was running a Hassou Tobi setup.
