Keep doing this long enough and Poligaf will be banished to the wastebin that is Sales Archive

There was a fair amount of complaining when I did the MO/CO/MN thread, and the conversations in this thread and that were pretty much exactly parallel. I'm not saying there shouldn't be one (alas, I don't have time to create it), just that I don't think it's altogether necessary.

If someone does make the thread, please remember to link back to this one.

Hah, I was going to make that joke a bit ago but decided not to go there. :lol

I do hope Snowe's health is okay, and that this is a political or personal decision, rather than one forced upon her.

Official statement:

STATEMENT OF SENATOR OLYMPIA J. SNOWE ON
RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN FOR UNITED STATES SENATE

WASHINGTON, D.C – Three-term Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) issued the following statement today with regard to her re-election campaign:

“After an extraordinary amount of reflection and consideration, I am announcing today that I will not be a candidate for re-election to the United States Senate.

“After 33 years in the Congress this was not an easy decision. My husband and I are in good health. We have laid an exceptionally strong foundation for the campaign, and I have no doubt I would have won re-election. It has been an indescribable honor and immeasurable privilege to serve the people of Maine, first in both houses of Maine’s legislature and later in both houses of Congress. To this day, I remain deeply passionate about public service, and I cherish the opportunity I have been given for nearly four decades to help improve the lives of my fellow Mainers.

“As I have long said, what motivates me is producing results for those who have entrusted me to be their voice and their champion, and I am filled with that same sense of responsibility today as I was on my first day in the Maine House of Representatives. I do find it frustrating, however, that an atmosphere of polarization and ‘my way or the highway’ ideologies has become pervasive in campaigns and in our governing institutions.

“With my Spartan ancestry I am a fighter at heart; and I am well prepared for the electoral battle, so that is not the issue. However, what I have had to consider is how productive an additional term would be. Unfortunately, I do not realistically expect the partisanship of recent years in the Senate to change over the short term. So at this stage of my tenure in public service, I have concluded that I am not prepared to commit myself to an additional six years in the Senate, which is what a fourth term would entail.

“As I enter a new chapter, I see a vital need for the political center in order for our democracy to flourish and to find solutions that unite rather than divide us. It is time for change in the way we govern, and I believe there are unique opportunities to build support for that change from outside the United States Senate. I intend to help give voice to my fellow citizens who believe, as I do, that we must return to an era of civility in government driven by a common purpose to fulfill the promise that is unique to America.

“In the meantime, as I complete my third term, I look forward to continuing to fight for the people of Maine and the future of our nation. And I will be forever and unyieldingly grateful for the trust that the people of Maine have placed in me, and for the phenomenal friendship and assistance I have received over the years from my colleagues, my supporters, and my staff, both in Maine and in Washington.” Senator Snowe will be scheduling a news conference in Portland, Maine, in order to further discuss her decision when she returns to her home state on Friday.

Sounds like she's a) "spartan," and b) going to be a lobbyist.

A lobbyist for the Neutral Council?

Here's what Sanders had to say about Snowe's retirement:
Let me just say this: I knew Olympia Snowe when we served together in the House, and I think she is one of the most respected Members of the Senate, and surely is one of the very last of the Republican moderates. I certainly can’t speculate as to what impact the right-wing drift of the Republican party has had on her, and I don’t know, all I can say is she was a very good Senator and she is going to be missed.

Evan Baye deux?
I certainly hope not.

Whoever they nominate will be more liberal than Snowe. And even if it was a conservative Democrat, it would still keep the GOP from taking control of the Senate.
I don't know enough to be sure of that, and if it's another Ben Nelson situation, Republicans may as well have control of the Senate.

It doesn't have to be a blue dog, it could be someone like Claire McCaskill.
Who is not long for this (political) world, last I checked.

She is going to be missed. Although I didn't care for some of her decisions in the senate during some of the key debates it at least seemed like they were honest grievances rather then towing the line of the party. I imagine the crap she had to put up with the leaders in the party trying to keep her in line during the 2008-2010 stretch must have been hard and in the current climate her voice is drowned out. Wish most of the republican senators had her mindset even if they all had very different ideals on to run the country.

Radical in that it's not using any sort of education in the guess? :p
It's uneducated to hypothesize that the electorate that supports a moderate Republican would be most likely to endorse a conservative Democrat?

Maine is much more liberal than Nebraska. It hasn't voted for a Republican President since '88.
On the other hand, Pennsylvania hasn't elected gone blue in a presidential election in at least three cycles and sent Pat Toomey to the senate, so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Fork 'em, Sparky!
I can't compromise on abortion, sorry. Other than, I am pretty flexible, based on the candidate's other positions. Political Compass calls me one hell of a centrist, though.

Incumbency is a very powerful thing in American politics. One of Maine's representatives, Chellie Pingree, is a vice-chair of the CPC. I don't think you can really say until we have a good look at all the Democratic candidates.

That doesn't make what I said unreasonable. It doesn't even contradict it-one exceedingly liberal district in an otherwise mostly moderate state could still produce a Blue Dog senator.

Prediction: Romney loses Michigan by 2 points.

Saw TA make the same prediction earlier. I think part of me is going that way just because it would be so hilarious.

One "exceedingly liberal district" that represents half of the state's population...? Seems like, based on Maine's other district, it could go either way depending on who runs.

Gingrich - 12

Arizona
Romney - 42
Santorum - 35
Paul - 12
Gingrich - 11

^ Indeed.

If there's a bigger shame in modern comedy, it's that Armisen is the best Obama impersonator we have. We desperately need a Darrell Hammond-type to take the Obama reins at SNL after he's reelected.

This isn't true. The guy on Key and Peele (Jordan Peele I think is his name) does a better Obama than Armisen.
