Did you guys fucking read this? Holy fucking shit.

What a bunch of fucking scumbags.

http://politicalwire.com/archives/2...rprises_democrats_with_redrawn_districts.html

So basically, the Virginia Senate is tied 20-20. One of the members -- a 79 year old black civil rights veteran -- was at Obama's inauguration, so during a day where the Senate was 20-19 (Republican), the Virginia Senate republicans redrew the state's districts to get rid of a Democratic seat in western Virginia.

The Dems are going to sue.

That is pretty fucking crazy.

Seems like republicans realize cheating and redistributing is their best short term strategy as they wait for the country to yearn once more for conservatism

Is that supposed to be Obama? Christ.

Ramirez really struggles with drawing him which I've always found amusing. He doesn't seem to know how to draw him so that you know you're not supposed to like him without making him close his eyes in order to make him look snooty. I seriously don't know whether Ramirez has ever drawn Obama with his eyes open before.

*sigh*

There are not enough face palms in the world for how full-on retard the Republicans have become...

Yes, obviously it helps to be conservative. Creationists are also capable of doing comedy, and the fact that it probably won't be very funny to people who don't buy into their premises doesn't change that.

There seems to me to be a big difference between Ramirez's cartoons and ones like what I posted, though. I have a hard time imagining that many conservatives find Ramirez's cartoons funny. They're not even jokes.

Yep. I don't find the Teo-ing cartoon particularly funny because I don't think there's any truth behind it (and it's not exactly "A" material anyway), but it is a joke. It's a humorous association between two ostensibly unrelated things (Te'o's invisible girlfriend and Obama's legacy). But the Ramirez cartoon isn't a joke at all. There's no witty association or analogy to make. It's just "this guy lied, and this guy lied, and this guy lied" (about something he never said, but whatever). Well, OK then, thanks for the info Ramirez!

So Poligaf....

I presume youre all familiar with the way people love to associate national debt with household debt and credit cards etc etc.

And how theyre always dead wrong, for hundreds of reasons, like households not living 500 years or printing money etc

But does the following analogy make sense, re debt limit?

Imagine your wife asked you to buy things. Lots of things. $25,000 worth, and demanded you buy them even. So you go out shopping, and put it all on the credit card. Makes sense, why pay cash when you can get a 25 day interest free loan AND rack up airline miles? Would be stupid not to.

So your credit card bill is coming due, and you are ready to pay it (you have, after all, $1m in the bank). But hold up. The wife says you've reached your bank account withdraw debt limit She says you can only take out $200.....unless you do what she says. She wants you to eliminate dozens of things you like, but she doesn't. No more golf. No more cable. No more beer. And you have to vacuum the house every day, and twice on Saturdays. All of it must be cut if you want her to lift the debt ceiling so you can pay off your card. And if you don't do it, you default, and ruin your credit for life.

THAT is the household debt limit analogy.

I'm scared to answer because I can't figure out how the price of gas in California enters into it, but I'm sure it does somehow.

Well, in the second half of the example at least, the wife is the GOP. So, they'd complain that really it was both the husband and wife that racked up the debt, that the husband spent most of it on charity, and that at least the wife spent money on useful things like defending the children by proactively attacking a mean family a few blocks away.

That went off the rails somewhere along the line, but the point is it doesn't entirely hold up. :p

Fair enough, so instead of beer golf etc, the man should be asked to cut their health insurance, lawn care, kindle account and museum sponsorship?

I think I've got a plan to write something up now about how Obama used his inaugural to put Republicans (who must oppose anything he does) on the wrong side of gay marriage.

Also, Weigel just linked to last year's Black List, containing the most well-liked screenplays not to be bought last year. I thought this might be of interest:

Even thirtysomething British indie musicians?

It's all we're good for!

Anyway, the first and second family sure had a Star Trek theme going on for the inauguration. Josh Marshall pointed the Romulan comparison out, but I can't believe I didn't catch it.

And Joe Biden's daughter wearing the Starfleet dress uniform.

All those comparisons of Obama to a Vulcan, all so very wrong. All hail the Obamulan Star Empire.

I wanna punch my dad right now. And his boss. Especially his boss, apparently.

My dad was talking about how the contract is coming up for their union and they're not going to get healthcare because his boss is a big Christian and he doesn't want to pay for abortion! I was like.. uh... he doesn't have to. My dad says contraception. He doesn't want to pay for contraception. I asked if he paid for viagra, and my dad kind of weaseled out of that of it trying to say they likely don't because they do their own health insurance or something. I then still tried to press on and say that his boss was a pretty shit Christian, taking away people's healthcare just because they might use it to buy contraception, something which can and is used for more than just birth control purposes. My dad said that just because he's rich doesn't mean we should be able to force him to do something. I just kept pressing saying that doesn't matter. You don't get to claim Christianity as a shield to do shitty things and then not be a Christian on other things. My dad kept saying how great of a Christian he is...and I quote "He's a much much bigger Christian than Obama." To which I immediately said he absolutely couldn't know that sort of thing at all. He said oh he knows it.

So he said they might do something with their insurance where they get like $150 to spend elsewhere and get their own insurance. I wanted to be like "Oh... well then he's paying for contraception, then, eh?" because literally that's what he's doing. It's the same thing in my eyes. He's just cutting healthcare out of spite.

I don't get it guys. How the hell can you call yourself Christian and think and do like that? Jesus healed people, and I certainly don't remember him doing it on condition of what else they did in their life. Jesus said to heal the sick. Jesus said fuck all about abortions, even.

I thought Obama's speech was pretty good. Not his most inspirational, imo, but I really liked that he brought up gay rights and climate change. It actually gave me some hope that he may still try to get some big climate legislation passed this term.
To hear Obama speak of gay marriage was a melodious reminder that we've actually progressed as a nation.
Yay! You missed some stuff!
Tell me. I lament missing everyone's realization that the ascent of insurgent groups in North Africa is a big fucking deal; a topic I've long posted on. Any notable bans?
What is this madness.
It was tough.
I nominated you for most eloquent speaker in a thread recently. Just saying.

The second half lf the speech was good. What's the next thing to look forward to? When are we going to know what filibuster reform is going to look like?
Good choice.

You guys see the talking points memo post about what McConnell's staff is sending g out? I saw the link at work and can't find it on my phone but it was shameful and hilarious at the same time.

Quote some Matthew 23 at him. Especially verses 23 to 33. As an added bonus, it specifically teaches against public prayer.

Mark 12:41 onwards is a good argument against flat taxes as well and is a surprisingly succinct example of the concept of diminishing marginal utility.

These people are the worst. I don't understand the mindset at all.

Local tea party house member is seeking interns.

Should I apply and destroy them from the inside?

they'll fire you probably, and why would you want to? And its not like you're going to be influencing policy.

I really need to polish up my biblical IQ. While I'm not religious the book is full of great quotable things and philosphies

Anybody have some good sources about Jindal's tax plan? I want to ask him about how he justifies eliminating the corporate tax to induce jobs when I've heard this kind of thing never works (A source or paper on lowering corporate taxes and increase in the local economy would be cool) and also the effect a higher sales tax would have on lower incomes (how it affects them more and how richer people could get around this more easily, by going out of state to buy a boat for example while poorer folk can only really buy locally with the high taxes)

Any kind of blog post or article would be nice

I'd like to make it a nuanced question that can't be answered with simple talking points and facts kind of help that out.

I unintentionally fell asleep this evening and I dreamed that while Obama was taking the oath of office Joe Biden grabs that thick MLK bible and hits Obama on the head and says "I told you he was storybook man."

Biden assumes the Presidency and Al Roker stands up and chants "YESSSSS!!!! YEEEEEESSSS!!!".

I could influence so much policy.

"No sir, you did not receive any calls today"
"Why yes, I did hand the bill over to mcturtle"
"Sir, I got 500 calls today from constituents demanding you raise their taxes"

Ok, I laughed. The Al Roker part killed me.
