You know, if Marco Rubio thinks his service in the Senate is so meaningless but refuses to resign, he should at least refuse his salary or donate it to a worthy cause.

But given his shitty financial history, that's probably not going to happen.

What a fuckhead. Seriously.

Marco Rubio maybe killed someone in 2004 (back when he was 12), but he's also lying about his tax plan:

http://m.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2015/10/are-we-allowed-say-marco-rubio-lying-about-his-tax-plan

tl;dr, Rubio badly explained his tax plan to The Tax Foundation in a way that made the Tax Foundation assume that Rubio was promising basic income to all Americans. Rubio's plan will not provide basic income, however, but he's still promoting the Tax Foundation findings regarding how the poor would benefit even though they're based on an incorrect assumption.

Jeb's only increasing my schadenfreude that the nomination falls further from his grasp with each passing day.

On the other hand, I doubt that he's the only GOP candidate who holds views like this.

Sure, this is probably everyone running's position other than Carson and Rand and Pataki, but Jeb actually said it so I will hate him directly for now.

Nothing quite like undermining petulance. :>

So it does say something. A country isn't an island (well....).

You can't just say it doesn't say something then in your explanation say exactly what it says: the world is interdependent and planned socialism as been attempted in many countries and failed.
Corey would have some choice words for you if he were around
I've got to be honest here--Trump has nothing to gain by bringing it up and lying about this. I tend to believe him in this case.
They might have asked him for a statement on a subject painting him unfavorably, and he is merely employing the style of attack that has always served him so well

Trump does have an incentive to lie; trying to undermine the segment Last Week Tonight is about to do on him by suggesting they're just bitter he wouldn't go on the show.

That or he was confused about why they called and he made shit up.

Has Last Week Tonight ever had a politician on as a guest?

I'm not sure I recall one being on and can't recognize any names from the past shows https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Last_Week_Tonight_with_John_Oliver_episodes

That isn't to say he couldn't have been invited, just their track record seems to be more focused elsewhere than politicians. They tend to have activists and specialists as opposed to something like The Daily Show where politicians and celebrities are more usual.

Shouldn't Bernie be spending ad money on the states he's going to be decimated in due to his demographic deficits in an attempt to make up those differences. I swear, his campaign can't think more than one week ahead.

Maybe he got invited to the daily show, remembered John Stewart retired, and couldn't remember the new guy's name? *shrug*

That actually seems more plausible than either of them lying about it tbh

He has to win IA and NH first. He's finished if he can't win NH.

Politico has a new article: Rubio and Trump's South Carolina showdown.

Sounds like a serious contest. But then...

Trump’s campaign has been hard at work. It has three offices in the state. A fourth in Greenville is set to open next week. Across the street from the Myrtle Beach office, an old bank is undergoing renovations, scheduled for completion in two weeks, that will turn it into an event space for the campaign. Both properties are owned by Stuart Axelrod, a local DUI and personal injury lawyer who supports Trump.

Rubio has no offices in the state. Collins, his co-chair, cited frugality. “We're running a lean campaign,” he said. By contrast, the Bush campaign recently touted its opening of a fourth office in South Carolina as a sign of its seriousness in the state.

Ballentine said the Rubio campaign would eventually open just a single office, in Columbia. “Uber doesn’t own any taxis, but they’re the largest transportation company,” he said. “Amazon doesn’t own a lot of storefronts.”
As long as there's a few Starbucks to work out of they're good! Joke campaign.

But the zeal of Carson’s supporters here can rival that of Trump’s. About five percent of South Carolina Republican primary voters are home-schoolers, a subculture in which Carson is revered. Many evangelicals in the state display personalized portraits of Carson, made to look as if they were drawn in charcoal, on the walls of their homes.
Wow.

Do Republicans really need a ground game? Unlike Democrats their people show up to vote.

I'm sure it's more important for a Republican candidate to have a strong ground game during the primaries. With things looking right now, I really don't see how Rubio is going to pull this off...

I really think ground game could kill Rubio if he doesn't take it seriously.
I could understand Rubio wanting to keep spending low on organization now while his fundraising is subpar but the entire message his campaign team seems to be sending with their Starbucks/Uber/Amazon comments is that they think field operations are a thing of the past; old politics in his New American Century™.

Amusingly, Trump is taking the ground game more seriously than all the "serious candidates":
Meanwhile, Trump has spent nearly $1 million in the early states, eclipsing all of his rivals, particularly in New Hampshire, where he just opened two more campaign offices.

The numbers show that Trump is not relying just on his flashy media appearances and his surprising durability atop GOP polls. There is more to his campaign than his attention-grabbing statements, late-night tweets, and debate-stage braggadocio.

In Iowa, where Trump has hired Chuck Laudner, who ran Rick Santorum’s surprisingly successful 2012 campaign, captains are in place in all 1,800 Iowa precincts, according to Trump’s campaign, which is now working on getting second and third captains. That ground-level operation is needed to identify supporters and explain to them the complex caucus system, which requires them to show up at a local gym or community center Feb. 1 and convince their neighbors to get behind Trump.

“The Trump campaign is probably the best campaign in Iowa in terms of getting people to understand what caucusing is, what it requires, and how to do it,” said Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Iowa Republican Party who now runs the influential website the Iowa Republican. “They’ve been talking caucus, caucus, caucus for months now.”

They pass out cards to explain the process. They give speeches on how simple it is. They show up in unexpected places wearing Trump gear. They take names and phone numbers, and follow up.

“There’s all these new people tuned into a Republican primary because of Trump,” Robinson said. “If they can get them to actually engage in the caucus — or in the primary in New Hampshire — then they’ve got something. They’ve got something that could be very meaningful and difficult for his opponents to match.”

Last Week Tonight doesn't have guests, per se. He'll get someone to come in to be part of a bit. Like tap dancing Steve Buscemi, or Martin Sheen narrating a fake end of the world film. So /if/ the LWT crew contacted Trump's people, it would have been for a bit, not an interview.

Yeah, I'll bet Carson has the home schooler vote all locked up.

Do home-schooled kids actually have to learn?

Now the family is embroiled in a legal battle the Texas Supreme Court hears next week that could have broad implications on the nation's booming home-school ranks. The McIntyres are accused of failing to teach their children educational basics because they were waiting to be transported to heaven with the second coming of Jesus Christ.
But problems began when the dealership's co-owner and Michael's twin brother, Tracy, reported never seeing the children reading, working on math, using computers or doing much of anything educational except singing and playing instruments. He said he heard one of them say learning was unnecessary since "they were going to be raptured."

Seems like the only candidates on the GOP side who're taking GOTV seriously thus far are Trump, Bush, and Cruz. This was a big factor in my decision to stick with my Trump pick, honestly.

And RIP Senator Fred Thompson.

Wait, Trump has the biggest ground game?

He's been seriously building his ground game since after the first debate. It's the reason I've been so sure he's going to win this thing, his ground game eclipses that of everyone else. He says crazy shit to stay in the news and uses the money he saves to build his ground game and grassroots efforts. It's really been a rather brilliant strategy.

It's still eclipsed by Hillary's ground game though, so don't worry too much.

I'm starting to feel like Trump has the nomination in the bag.

Welcome to the classiest, most luxurious gold plated yacht in the fleet.

Any chance of Ben Carson's smartphone app adequately replacing a real campaign operation?

I seriously doubt it.

So Fiorina semi-backed off her stupid fucking line about 92% of the job losses under Obama's watch. But after that, she starts listing off a litany of other, equally useless, context free stats that she said was proof that progressive policies don't work.

Why does nobody fucking ever bring up that little economic meltdown thing we had a while back? I mean, you could probably argue that progressive policies may not have helped restore people's economic livelihood, but they didn't fucking cause it!

Trump has been drawing some huge crowds recently, too. To his credit, he has hired a competent staff.

I seriously doubt it.

I've been down on Trump's ability to win this thing, though i feel he has serious potential to play spoiler and win a few states.

That article about the iowa ground operation though, holy hell. That's an EXTREMELY competent operation put together by someone who wants to win. No one else is even close. Trump isn't just in his own league here, he's playing a completely different sport entirely.

No one does this unless they are serious about winning. A serious about winning trump may indeed be unstoppable.

And RIP Senator Fred Thompson.

Out of curiosity, how many former actors turned politicians became Republicans?

You have Jesse Ventura, Fred Thompson, Reagan, Ben Stein, etc.

Compared to Al Franken and Clay Aiken, lol

Wonder how HuffPo is gonna walk back their decision to shift Trump to entertainment should Trump continue to dominate.

there's no "should" here. There's no realistic scenario where Trump isn't still the frontrunner or damned close to it by the time Iowa begins.

Stein was a speechwriter for nixon before he dipped his toes into acting, I believe. you also forgot Sonny Bono on the Dem side, but he's been dead for a while...

Horrible liar that she is, at least Fiorina admitted her lie. Hopefully someone presses Rubio on his falsity outlined above.

Also, it's kind of amazing that Trump is taking his organising more seriously.
It feels kind of like he went into this for a laugh, but at some point he decided he has a real shot at this, and the campaign shifted into serious mode. Or as serious as Trump can be.
