Bernie Sanders not ruling out 2020 White House bid
Bernie Sanders didn’t rule out a 2020 presidential run Thursday while promising to be Donald Trump’s “worst nightmare” if Trump pursues hateful policies.

The president-elect will face a progressive revolt led by the Vermont Senator if he “takes people's anger and turns it against Muslims, Hispanics, African Americans and women,” Sanders tweeted.
"Four years is a long time from now," Sanders told The Associated Press in an interview. “We'll take one thing at a time, but I'm not ruling out anything.”
abuelito is going to washington in 2020 and he will recapture us the lost territories of pennsylvania and wisconsin. Feel the bern with me poligaf

79 is only a number do not be afraid of it

Wealthy people that come from old money like Trump look down upon the swiftly changing trends of the little people and value the appearance of kings and queens. Which generally seems to mean living in gold plated mausoleums.
I don't think that's how a lot of old money decorates. This is kind of a Gold-is-expensive-right tacky bullshit of 3rd world dictators.

Which.

I mean if Bernie wants to run again, by all means, it's a free country.

But he's not going to look nearly as good against a young photogenic liberal as he did against someone with as much baggage as Hillary.

If I were him I'd be more focused on setting up a successor who can capitalize on his movement while winning over minority voters. Anyone who totally writes off the South again after seeing how the primary played out is a moron.

And no not Tulsi either. The litmus test can not end at "did you support Bernie in the primaries? Oh cool, we'll excuse the Islamophobia and homophobia then" after how much goddamn shit Hillary got.

Bernie's gonna be 79...Really old by then.

Eh, it's 2016. People are living longer than ever now, unless he has some serious health problems or hereditary things going on like impending dementia or whatever, I don't have a problem with it.

I hope we find someone young and inspiring like Obama, but it's very likely we don't, and Bernie might be the best we have if he's healthy.

I like how national "Defense of Religion Act" is written to crush state's rights and defines defending religion as giving hospitals the ability to refuse to treat someone dying of AIDS.

The white evangelical church must be intellectually destroyed now, there has never been a better time to discredit the church after they debased themselves by electing Trump.

Nah. I doubt they care about being electing a known sinner into the White House with Pence as vp. They don't care about their hypocrisy

I imagine Mike Pence will have a role in God's Not Dead 3.

Mormons were the only religious group (aside from the small Muslim group) to at least, on some measurable levels, stick to their convictions and not vote for Trump. They still went majority to Trump though...

I think you mean now as in when Democrats are in power again. Any signs of attack against the evangelicals will be magnified tenfold by the right-wing propaganda machine, and we know those have a far better hold on the so called rural whites.

No, I mean that it's time to start writing article after article decrying the horrors of the evangelical church.

There is no moral ground for them to stand on, they are an institution of evil. They only cared about murdering Muslims and were eager to vote for a man who has paid mistresses for their abortions. This is the moment to discredit the church, right now.

???

I am not suggesting physically attacking churchgoers or church property. I am suggesting that anyone who hates the church should start writing articles attacking the lack of morality of the church, paint it as a hate cult (and it's really getting close there).

I should correct myself. It's what I've seen with wealthy people who want to affect the appearance of old and noble. A lot of them seem to have a rather tacky idea of it.

Good of people to forget the leaking of the Clinton opposition paper against Bernie (via Wikileaks). If you think Bernie isn't going to be attacked on a massive scale, some of which will be from that paper, you're mad.

He's free to run as the establishment candidate.

Ahhhh hahahaha... Feel that Bern. :p

More seriously, he can't run as an anti-establishment figure in 4 years if he actually does what he says and helps hold Trump to account.

Another hot take.

This is kind of a shocking indictment of the US media.

More proof that our media is runny wet dog garbage.

So.. apparently post election depression is a real thing.

I'm a bit better now but last week I was a complete wreck.

I haven't felt that depressed in 8/9 years.

Welp... at least 11 House Republicans believe in Climate Change:

https://www.theguardian.com/environ...publican-party-stands-alone-in-climate-denial

This is so fucking sad. Trump is going to let every damn pipeline bill pass. Money to be made, climate to be changed. I wonder what the worst case scenario is for US carbon emissions by 2020...

*sigh*

The fact we have to plan/expect the worst is terrible.

The Keystone Pipeline isn't going to be the worst climate offense. It's really overstated how damaging it will be in comparison to other things he can do. Most arguments against it ignore how shitty the way we currently ship crude is.

Working at an oil company, hearing about crashes by rail is like as frequent as a bell ringing at the front desk in a hotel lobby. Unbelievable how often they spill.

The point about "the media never covered issues so how would WWC voters even know that Trump hated free trade?" is a bit interesting...

It's most likely that Obama-voting WWC just didn't like Hillary because of her battle scars, or it's possible that Trump just gave them enemies (black people, Jews, Muslims, immigrants) for the WWC to hate.

Nonetheless, all told, the six documents included in Carrk’s email total a staggering 1,020 pages, and run the gamut from a basic biography of Sanders to a year-by-year analysis of his activity during his 16 years in the House of Representatives. The vast majority of the information contained in the files is not harmful to Sanders, but rather a detailed rundown of his past. At points, however, the analysis is sharply worded.
You were saying

And I'm sure you were as cognizant and outspoken about the potential for Hillary's emails to open her to attack on a massive scale

I'm not actually kidding. When you've mounted a run for Presidential candidacy and as a result have been bestowed a leadership position in the Party, have installed people who supported you on committees, have supporters within the start Party infrastructures, will likely have had the DNC Chair endorsed your previous candidacy, and have been in Congress for a million years, you are part of the big bad Establishment.

I think we are forgetting just how much Hillary's trustworthiness and unfavorables played into how effective those attacks were.

People turned nothing into something just because they don't trust her. People came away with wild conclusions based on nothing. Stuff like that just stuck to her.

Well,

1) I was referring to the average pro-Bernie supporter, and people going "Yeyyyy! Bernie!" Not websites or journalists.

2) Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Of course many weren't as cognizant about the potential of Hillary's emails. But now we are, we should be wary of celebrating a possible candidate who has the same issues.

Yeah I feel like that last bit is a massive equivocation on your part. Hillary had tremendous untrustworthy problems and deleted 30k+ emails which the media would never let voters forget, while Bernie is openly socialist and didn't get along well with his colleagues at times or author sweeping legislation during decades of public service? Not seeing the link.

Maybe we're talking at cross-purposes here? I said:

If you think Bernie isn't going to be attacked on a massive scale, some of which will be from that paper, you're mad.

That Politico article literally highlights a problem with Bernie running again:

It digs into his record on LGBT rights as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, and includes a 2-page sub-section titled “Using His Position to Benefit Family,” detailing campaign work done by his wife, son and stepdaughter. And it anticipates more of the fights that would end up animating the primary, with detailed summaries of Sanders’ votes and past statements about the Commodities Futures Modernization Act and the 1994 crime bill.

“Sanders campaign planned to highlight Hillary Clinton’s statements in favor of the 1994 crime bill…but Sanders voted for the 1994 crime bill…and spoke out in favor of the bill…and criticized those who opposed it…and touted it on his 2006 Senate election website…the Sanders campaign also highlighted the crime bill to prove he had a strong record fighting crime against women,” reads a collection of sub-section titles.

The Hillary oppo reveal will give Bernie opponents a playbook for how to attack him. In places it is the very essence of Hillary's public/private faces issue. And if it worked against Hillary in 2016, it'll work against Bernie in 2020. Also, the hypocrisy of someone running on an anti-establishment ticket in 2016 when they had "decades of public service".

Their mental contortions are maddening. "God has used evil people to do His work." GTFO. They called Obama evil, yet 20 million more people had access to healthcare and teen pregnancies went down during his presidency.
Yeah, but those 20 million people were illegal immigrants! And teen pregnancy didn't go down the way WE wanted it to!

Who cares? The idea isn't converting over White Evangelical Deplorables from religion, it's stopping future people from becoming white evangelicals.

We're not all like that :(

My denomination has a higher amount of democrats than republicans according to the latest statistics, and we think religion has no place in government whatsoever.

Jennifer Rubin is right on the money. The mental gymnastics I've seen many evangelicals do to justify voting only for republicans are ridiculous. Republicans repeatedly hurt poor people with policy, and that goes directly against what Christ taught. It is incredibly frustrating.

The mixed-member proportionality system Germany uses is interesting. Basically you cast two votes, one for a representative from your district and then a second vote for a party. The second vote determines the proportions held by each party in the chamber, with additional members being seated from party lists as needed to make the numbers work out.

Germany's system is just a halfway house, though - it still results in a minor overrepresentation of rurally-oriented parties. Literally any electoral system that ties representatives to geographical subdistricts will do this given the way Western economies are structured geographically.

My favourite electoral system is that used by most of the Scandinavian countries - proportional representation with open party lists. They do sort of use districts, but that's mostly for convenience - you get choice overload if you have X lists of Y many candidates (where X is parties and Y is the number of districts), but by splitting it up into districts you get X lists of Y/n candidates, and you adjust n accordingly to find a sweetspot; probably about ten (so with the House of Representatives you'd have about 45 national districts, although small states would hate it because some of them would belong in the same House district). You do have to do a little geographical division on this account but unfortunately I'm not entirely sure that's fully avoidable. Democracy doesn't really scale very well - as population increases you either have to reduce the number of representatives per person (rural bias) or increase the number of choices per person (choice overload).

Sanders is too damn old. I'm sorry. Honestly so are Trump and Hillary too. We need someone young and exciting for 2020 with tons of energy who can talk in a way everyone can understand, who can fly out to every crappy little town on a constant basis taking no voter for granted.

Still, fuck the FBI. When you have people from Obama to stupid Corey both saying in their own way that the FBI played a huge role you can't ignore that. Had he never sent that letter Hillary would probably have the extra 1-2% she needed in the rust belt. And you'll recall, most pollsters thought she'd lose up to 2 points over it but they also thought she was up by at LEAST 5 so the downballot was the only concern.

I hope Comey realizes he is partially responsible for killing the economy, health care, foreign policy and stacking the SCOTUS with justices that will take back social progress by a good 50 years. Fucker. Oh and letting a really tv star permanently tarnish what it means to run for President.

For me it's becoming a weird tradeoff between isolating myself to retain my productivity and sanity, or staying up to date and aware enough to do something and fight.

this is my current status. on tuesday the fiancee and I are going to california for a week to what was to be a fact finding trip on a potential move, but that idea has been shelved for the next year or so due to the election and uncertainty surrounding ACA. so this trip is going to be bittersweet, but once we get back I think i'm gonna back into the swing of things.

What do you guys think about Trump's infrastructure spending plan?

It's kind of funny how Obama was blocked massively from infrastructure spending and now it looks like republicans will likely let Trump do it.

And by funny I mean annoying as shit.

Wow Joe on Morning Joe is REALLY pushing Mitt Romney for Sect. of State. He's literally been cheerleading for Romney all morning, probably hoping that Trump is watching.

I have a hard time believing Romney would want a first class ticket on the crazy train but stranger things have happened.

I dont think Bernie would run if Warren does.

Correct.

To people thinking Bernie can be painted as establishment like Clinton was... well let's just say I strongly disagree. Same with Warren, who is far more Democrats establishment than Bernie. Neither is close to Clinton.

The top 3 house dem leaders are 76,77,78. That is a bit problem.

A huge problem.

In my opinion, Democrats need to pledge to go "big money free" by 2020. This the only way to really rebuild a winning party.

This is basically what Obama did in '08.

It's part of what led them into the dumpster. Clean hands mean nothing if you don't have power.
