PoliGAF 2017 |OT4| The leaks are coming from inside the white house

Can someone create GA-6 election OT? In the off chance a gaf swing voter sees it and gets reminded that today's the election day. We're the 5th biggest driver of traffic to hillaryclinton.com anyway!

How do you define socialism? I missed that part of our discussion.

Usually socialism means "worker ownership of industry", but in a strictly Marxist standpoint socialism means the abolition of private property and wage labor.

Bernie used socialism casually in ways that I believe were disingenuous.
That's my definition, yeah. Wasn't meaning your definition of Socialism specifically, just the general convo btw.

It fell apart because of racism but it's worth noting that the alliance and fusion voting for poor white southern Populists and poor black southern Republicans in North Carolina was one of the most historically racially and economically progressive forces. The Populist party didn't really outlive its death because of racism, either, though in part that's because of the Democrats running Bryan for like 30 years straight.

Sure, it was for a couple years. Then white people dumped black people because they valued white supremacy above everything else.

I'm not sure what else could be taken from that other than "populism doesn't work for minorities."

I just mean that the populist party/movement died then when they abandoned fusion for white supremacy but in its existence (at least in NC) it was remarkably progressive

You can make the point that they'd always choose white supremacy but they abandoned populism for white supremacy, which I think is a meaningful distinction from populism being intrinsically racist.

But it didn't die just because it abandoned minorities! It still existed!

They can be both populist and white supremacist!

White supremacy was part of their populism, though.

Populism isn't necessarily intrinsically racist, but American populism generally has been.

This is a pretty stunning chart I found on twitter dot com

A Vox reporter interviewed people in various fast food/casual restaurants around GA-06. Its alternately funny and scary. Especially he ran into a bunch of young people who aren't going to vote.

These fucking idiots are why Ossoff will lose and why we won't have a D wave next year. So much complacency. How bad does it have to get for them to get them involved and voting again?

These types are the exact reason why Dems keep losing, and I'm not sure how to get through to them, the fucking pathetic snowflakes.

can you really expect kids just starting their adult lives to have a opinion on economic issues etc.?

I certainly did at 20. I mean I look back on those opinions and think they're wrong in some important and not so important ways, but I was definitely voting in local races even then

I think people are using the primary runoff thread.

This is largely my thinking, with the caveat that populism inherently attracts racists because the language of average people versus the people who have things they don't deserve or didn't earn is pretty easy to dog whistle with.

I said it on November 9th; straight white dudes on the left will always be the most apathetic because they have the leas to materially fear. The GOP whips its base into a fear frenzy and marginalized people on the left know how bad shit can get at the drop of a hat but dudes who look like me just don't get it

Good to see that. Looks like the base is definitely active.

Wtf happened in Connecticut tho

Most Republican district in CT. Also, if my girlfriend's parents are any indication, a lot of Ds in the state really hate Malloy. I think there's actually a real risk of that governors mansion being flipped red next year.

Spicey-time was pretty boring, but the last question was if the president believes Russia interfered with the election.

Spicer said he hasn't talked with his boss about it.

Oooookay

A friend of mine and I have rehashed this conversation a lot, and he was a pretty enthusiastic Clinton supporter too. But we're both straight white men, there are absolutely specific Trump policies that won't affect us in a way that's immediately tangible.

This is why I think it's dumb to write off Thompson and Quist as failures. Granted, Quist was a pretty bad candidate, but they did well relative to their districts. I think there's a lot we can apply from Thompson's run in particular to similar districts (especially ones with a somewhat less strong R-lean).

Truly the REAL danger is the minority-led media being too preachy and pushing people over the (R) side.

Goddamn I hated that thread's existence with such a passion and it giving a platform to diet racists with no one calling out some stupid stuff being said in it. But I also realized there's no reason to give such a thread a bump.

Not calling them fucking pathetic snowflakes is probably a start.

Nah, this is one of those things where you're still responsible for your choices even if other people are calling you names.

I mean, they're responsible for their choices, sure. But we were discussing how to get their votes. I'd start with not insulting them. This thread does love to insult the people it needs to win, it's kind of impressive. It's like this, but less successful.

In theory the weather tampering down turnout would help Ossoff because Handel is relying more heavily on election day turnout.

But don't all the Democratic snowflakes need to be led to the voting booths by a carrot on a stick, or a bowl of quinoa with avocado toast on the side, just to get out of the house and vote, while Republicans trudge through it all to vote against those anti-American libruls at any cost? Just a thought...

I'd rather not to go through the US equivalent of ex-UKIP shitstains to win.

Then... don't win?

The maths doesn't add up. Either you increase the youth turnout, or you persuade Obama-Trump voters to move back. You're insulting both of these sets of voters. So uh...

I disagree, shame is a powerful emotion and these people should be ashamed of how complacent they are when they could affect change by voting, yet they act like they're too cool to vote, yet benefit from all that America has to offer.

Shame them for their bad choices and maybe they'll think twice next time.

Not calling them fucking pathetic snowflakes is probably a start.

"But if we call them racist, they'll become racist..."

Sometimes you gotta call 'em as you see 'em. An eighteen-year-old dolt who justifies his apathy with some pseudo-philosophical babble about politics "being too violent" deserves to be called a snowflake.

I find shame to be underrated as a tool. If applied sparingly and purposefully, it can work.

Hooligan69, we owe each other sodas.

That's my thought but remember that Ossoff already has most of his votes banked through the early vote and election day turnout is expected to be pretty poor anyway.
