People got displeased by a white woman having the audacity to talk about minority issues. You think a woman of color isn't going to have to walk the worlds most ridiculous tight rope? Harris is going to get all the coded sexist and coded racist language imaginable.

Well, somebody is going to have do it sometime. Kamala's here now, she's got skills, she's got some heat. And she's got the superficial boxes checked off too. So, why not her?

I'm not saying pick Biden. I love him, but I'm not saying that. I just think the ageism in here is ludicrous at times.

The ageism isn't because PoliGAF hates anyone over 70. It's because voters like young and sexy. Not that Biden isn't a good looking guy, of course.

I also have to think that nominating Biden in 2020 would be proof that the Democratic Party has absolutely no one else who can compete on a national level. That would be a terrible situation for the party to be in, regardless of whether he actually won or not. Rather than hitch our wagon to the most obvious, recognizable choices, I want the party's bench -- which is not as shallow as it's usually characterized as -- to flex some muscle. If we want voters to see this a new, rejuvenated Democratic Party, then it's got to have a new face or two at the top of its next ticket.

Well the Jacobin, Intercept and TYT trifecta already got the knives out on Harris, so more than likely she ain't happening in 2020.

Speaking of, what is up with these news orgs and hating black female political figures?

Hell, add Angela Rye into the mix and they would be against every notable black female democrat in the spotlight. Besides the Honorable Nina Turner of course.... Bleh

Special counsel is investigating Jared Kushner’s business dealings

Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller is investigating the finances and business dealings of Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, as part of the probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to officials familiar with the matter.

FBI agents and federal prosecutors have also been examining the financial dealings of other Trump associates, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Carter Page, who was listed as a foreign policy adviser for the campaign.

The officials who described the financial focus of the investigation spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

At the December meeting with Kislyak, Kushner suggested establishing a secure communications line between Trump officials and the Kremlin at a Russian diplomatic facility, according to U.S. officials who reviewed intelligence reports describing Kislyak’s account.

Does this mean we will eventually see Ivanka visit her husband for spousal visits while he serves prison time or perhaps will it eventually lead to her styling an orange jumpsuit as well? She should get ahead of the game and start a prison outfit label.

These supposedly "liberal" white men really aren't. They only support socialism (not really socialism but whatever) because they think it'll benefit them. "Focus on economic issues" might as well be dog whistle for "Tell the minorities to shut up and help the white man."

What do you guys think about Hickenlooper? I remember his name coming up a lot in Clinton VP talks and as a 2016 candidate if she didn't run, but I feel like I rarely hear anything about him now.

I'd probably vote for a literal sack of shit over Trump who's only a figurative one, but I don't like the idea of foregoing any experience or qualifications because lolol Trump sux. Trump can't get anything done because 1) he's an idiot and 2) he has no relationship with Congress. If he was liberal on every issue that wouldn't change and then he would just be our disappointment.

I like him and I think he should run because we need a non O'Malley who was a governor to run

Field can't just be anyone in the senate with a pulse in 2020

Kushner will go to prison like his old man. Trump can't pardon him from New York charges.
Yep. I'm willing to bet illegal financial dealing dug up by special council not directly related to Russia or obstruction will get kicked down to a state level if possible precisely for that reason.

Ooh, the goofy baseball game is about to start. I'll root for whoever makes the most errors.

Seriously talk, I'd pay to watch a congressional drunken softball league. Something like the ruleset from The Simpsons.

Edit: Aha, I looked them up.
1) Cannot leave First without chugging a beer. A keg is located at first base for convenience.
2) Scoring, you must chug a beer.
3) Dropping the ball in odd-numbered innings, you must chug a beer.
4) Fourth inning is the "beer inning" ... whatever that is.

Maybe Trump shouldn't have fired Comey. 🤔

Lisa Murkowski, a crucial Senate swing vote, is very frustrated with AHCA

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/6/15/15812924/voxcare-lisa-murkowski-alaska-ahca

We knew she was probably going to end up being one of the "No" votes on Trumpcare.

Rand Paul keeps talking like he's a pretty ardent no on this bill. If Murkowski also declines when the time comes, that's their margin. I wonder how many others in the Senate are watching the polling on AHCA sink like it got torpedoed, and dreading a meeting with the majority leader...

I hope they all realize Trump will throw them under the bus if the backlash from the healthcare bill is big enough.

She and Collins will be allowed to vote No by McConnel. That's how he runs these things.

Rand Paul has taken a strong no position unless some seriously crazy things are included like completely removing the premium tax credit. He, Collins, and Murkowski can't all be no votes.

I know this isn't a popular opinion in PoliGAF but I want people to know that there are a lot of left leaning voters that find it personally offensive when people say that a future candidate has to be a person of color or has to be a woman. It's one thing for women to say that it's a bonus for them if the candidate is a woman or for people of color to say that it's a bonus for them that their candidate is a minority but it feels very discriminatory when that devolves into "another white male candidate? Seriously?" or "here are all of the women we can run in 2020". It's very hard to hear that if you're white and/or male and not feel like you're being persecuted for something that's completely outside of your control. If you're trying to rebuild a winning coalition across America, framing politics in this way is extremely detrimental to your goal, even though it looks like you're just trying to reward essential blocs in your coalition.

It'd be funny if they pass a shitty healthcare bill and Trump decides to veto it. I don't want to take that chance.

TYT couldn't stop Kamala Harris if she decided to run. LOL

Hell, the way black support is consolidating around her already, I don't even think Booker could stop her.

She has a clear shot in 2020.

Voting for Kamala Harris and seeing her star power rise so rapidly has been one of the few bright spots of the 2016 election.

Republicans 2:0 in the middle of the first. Democrats are apparently the home team and are using the DH. Sissies. I'm changing parties. Some of these guys are serious about it.

VIP seating area is pretty empty but the general public area is packed. Okay, enough of this. I'm marginally entertained.

She's been my pick since mid last year. I can't wait for her to run. I think she's gonna dominate.

I think she may have a tough time shedding the harsh image she currently has, and that doesn't play well with voters. She's definitely qualified and would be a great president. I just don't know if she can convince voters nationwide to vote for her.

I mean, it's not cool to push for minority candidates to fish for votes (I'm reminded of the Chris Rock bit about people thinking black people voted by scratch and sniff), but my position is basically synonymous with affirmative action. It's absolutely embarrassing that we have never had a female president, and only one non-white president. And for other countries, it's a permanent embarrassment of the left that discriminatory conservative parties backed minority groups before the supposed pro-diversity parties.

Essentially it's the hiring game. If at the end of the day you have two candidates who differ by demographic (other factors equal) then we should back the underrepresented person. And in a country with 350 million people, I don't think it's that unlikely to find a person from an underrepresented demographic to match any overrepresented candidate.

Side note: some on the left are bad at accepting all minority groups. For example I've seen the arguments against running Frank back in the day because he's a white guy, while completely ignoring his sexual orientation. But representation matters and the reason affirmative action exists is because if left to our own devices, we favor privileged demographics by finding justifications that give us cover.

Like Royalan said, the black community is already rallying around her. And when she talks, she sounds like a real human being to me. There's always gonna be a large part of America that has a "problem" with her, and she'll be as much of a lightning rod for the Right as Obama was. I mean, those parts of Twitter are already slamming her. As much as I dig Gillibrand, I just really feel like it's gonna be Harris when she speaks.

It's gonna be fun when the Dem primary ends up being Harris vs Gillibrand, imo.

yeah we should just run white dudes forever so we don't offend white dudes

Representation matters and the Democratic Party is a party whose base is women and people of color. If some white people get mad when the party base supports someone like them, they need to do some self-reflection.

That's not what I said. I said don't make it a requirement and be open to a white man running for president again. Sometimes I hear language that makes those attributes seem disqualifying.

Kamala is great and she is still one of my top choices, but I am curious to see how Gillibrand would try to gain black support. I could easily see Gillibrand make a politically incorrect about racial issues, but instead of it being conservative politically incorrect, it would be liberal politically incorrect. Something like "Notice that Trump is too much of a goddamn wuss to hold one of his rallies in Flint, Michigan" or "Remember when that asshole said you have nothing to lose? I'm not so stupid as to think so little of you."

Well the Jacobin, Intercept and TYT trifecta already got the knives out on Harris, so more than likely she ain't happening in 2020.

Hell, add Angela Rye into the mix and they would be against every notable black female democrat in the spotlight. Besides the Honorable Nina Turner of course.... Bleh

I'm not a fan of Brazile/Walters/Reid but Kamala Harris is exceptionally talented, and everyone sees it. The motive of left leaning sites like TYT and Intercept is pretty obvious. It's a purity test, and anyone who isn't Bernie Sanders is problematic. Harris isn't "perfect." She's a former prosecutor, she has ties to law enforcement. She has corporate ties. She's from California so you know funny money is involved. But I always bring up Obama: he had corporate ties and was from Chicago, so you really know funny money was involved. Nobody gave a fuck because he was a great candidate, was charismatic, spoke to people effectively, etc. Harris isn't Obama but she's gonna be fine. And so will Booker.

I really hope Bernie runs in 2020, just so we can see what happens when there's an actual field of candidates. Not one guy soaking up the entire "anti-Hillary" vote. And when he loses fair in square (again) I guarantee you TYT and others will once again take their ball and go home....but it won't stop anything or hurt the candidate.

Did Jacobin write something about Harris? I only saw their pieces on Gillibrand and Gabbard, neither of which was anything out of line.

whyamihere and others think Harris is a total asshole in real life that no one likes though so I'm not sure she can do things like get endorsements.

I don't think anyone is making it a requirement that a candidate needs to not be a white male. It's ridiculous to think otherwise, as if white males are somehow at a major disadvantage in the Democratic Party primary.

I wonder when Trump starts revoking press pases? That feels like his next move.

"Any outlet that publishes illegal leaks and fake news will not be tolerated."

I'm routinely unimpressed by Harris. I like Gillibrand much more.

I don't think it solely makes her Presidential material, but her Senate Intel hearing questions have been the most impressive to me. I'm super impressed with her performance there.

I would agree with that, but in more spontaneous settings like interviews, podcasts, etc. I don't think she presents nearly as well.

I've heard it a lot before both explicitly and in subtext from certain people but in all honesty I think I was just triggered by this one post:

Chris Murphy is the most progressive guy in the Senate.

But he's also a cishet white guy so I'm not sure about him in the primary.

2020 will probably wind down to Harris vs Bernie.. and I think Bernie wins honestly.

But it's going to get ugly and I'm not looking forward to it.

Just do what I do can and think of them as right wings in sheep's clothing.

Prediction that has no basis in reality and means nothing: Harris and Gillibrand will both run and eat into their own potential bases.
