I feel like if we expand the welfare state enough it can just replace work and we can get to socialism that way.

The problem that the article focused on is exactly that though - making sure people know about the end goal, instead of just thinking capitalism + welfare is socialism. As long as the basic underpinnings of capitalism are still around, such as private control of the MoP, endless further capital accumulation and profit drive, etc. then the same structural issues that affect capitalism will keep recurring, so it's important for people not to get complacent and think "Yeah the Scandinavian model is good enough" or something. That's why it's important to make the distinction.
