Why do you think Boehner abandoned ship when he did?

It was liver failure or quitting.

Boehner's liver is immune to any side effects from excessive drinking though.

When the idiot's idiot voters don't outnumber your own.

So many INDY's though. Where does that vote go anyway if you lose his base? It isn't going to Democrats. You may have some disillusioned Nazi's, but one term with a Dem in power and they'll come back.

The establishment and the businesses that support them do not agree with his base. Something's gotta give eventually.

Tom Cotton reeeally doesn't want a clean DACA replacement bill to pass, and wants his beloved RAISE Act attached to it. Good luck with that Tom, you dumb xenophobic fuckboy.

They go to your primary challenger.

In most districts, the primary challenge is your biggest risk to losing your seat. They don't fear losing to Democrats, just an even crazier Republican.

McCain just released a statement that he's not going with the Graham-Cassidy Healthcare bill, as if there's anymore evidence that they can't possibly hit the deadline to repeal:

State Sen. Daniel Biss dropped Chicago Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa as his running mate in his bid to be the Democratic candidate for Illinois governor Wednesday.

"Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and I have reached a difficult decision about our ticket. As of today, I’ll be moving forward with a new running mate," Biss said in a statement announcing the decision less than a week after revealing Ramirez-Rosa as his choice for lieutenant governor.

The change came after backlash - including a lost endorsement - over Ramirez-Rosa's past comments on Israel.

Congressman Brad Schneider withdrew his support for Biss' campaign Sunday, citing concerns about Ramirez-Rosa's "past comments about the United States support of our ally Israel, and his affiliation with a group that is an outspoken supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel."

The group Schneider was referring to is the Democratic Socialists of America, a political activism organization that is, according to its website, the largest socialist organization in the country.

At the DSA's August convention in Chicago, the organization passed a resolution in support of BDS, a Palestinian-led movement calling for boycotts of companies that do business with Israel.

Ramirez-Rosa joined the DSA in March 2017, telling the Chicago Reader in an interview that Sen. Bernie Sanders - for whom the Chicago alderman was a delegate at the 2016 Democratic National Convention - opened the door for him.

Sources said Biss wanted Ramirez-Rosa to change his position on BDS, and while those close to the alderman said he was open to a dialogue, Biss wanted him to oppose the movement entirely, which Ramirez-Rosa refused to do.

After several days of negotiations, sources said Biss chose to remove Ramirez-Rosa from his campaign by telephone late Wednesday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear who Biss would choose to replace him, though candidates were required to file official paperwork with the Illinois State Board of Elections this week to begin circulating petitions, leaving little time to waste in selecting another running mate.

It's almost like today was just one giant day filled with spite from Trump for the GOP being so terrible.

Yeah, funny story about that.

daily beast said:
President Donald Trump just shivved his own party's congressional leadership heading into the biggest month of legislative business this year....

For all his famed negotiating skills, Trump emerged from the meeting having handed Democrats a legislative triumph. But according to sources close to Trump, the president was more than willing to cut the deal because he has grown tired, if not resentful, of Republican leaders on Capitol Hill.

Multiple West Wing sources told The Daily Beast how the president was looking to strike a quick and easy deal—and that his speed reaching this specific arrangement was in part ensured by his resentment towards Republican leaders, who Trump views as hostile, insufficiently loyal, and impotent. It was well-known within the White House that President Trump, going into the meeting, was ”not looking to do [Ryan and McConnell] any favors," as one White House official put it.

Simply put, the president made a ”deliberate decision not to care about Ryan's feelings" and did what he wanted, another White House adviser said.

Does agreeing with the Democrats basically harms his own legislative agenda?

It fucks up how GOP leadership wanted to handle the debt ceilng

they wanted to put it off until after midterms and then they could do whatever, including tacking on budget cuts to the debt ceiling. Now they are stuck doing it in december if the bill passes, which means right at the start of midterm campaigning. Imagine if the GOP shut down their own government in a midterm election season.

Remember they are also trying to do tax reform and other legislative items before the year is out. Add the debt ceiling for even more stuff to deal with.

I honestly think they just wanted the ordeal out of the political window. The back and forth. Their eventual loss to Pelosi.

I'm not sure how they think they ever had or could have leverage (even 16 months from now).

Paul Ryan and Mitch were never going to blow up the world economy. Understanding the difference between the eGOP and the insanity of the HFC is important here. Pelosi and Schumer were never going to give into stupid adders

It was always "pass a clear raise or the world burns on your watch"

One thing that confuses me a bit...

Why does it matter that Trump agreed with Democrats on 3 months? Isn't this still something congress needs to pass, and the GOP can do what they they want?

Ryan and McConnell basically said "well, Trump wants it, so we'll do it" when they got out of the meeting

The Freedom Caucus would happily burn the government to the ground so the GOP has little room to maneuver on the debt ceiling and the budget.

With the HFC crazies, they need democratic votes like before.

They need democratic votes because the HFC is insane. They wanted to push it until after the midterms. Now they're having to deal with it before, again, and with a budget, taxes, daca, aca stabilization etc etc.

It's just more leverage to dems when these things are being discussed.
