PS5 Is the Fastest-Selling Console in U.S. History (unit and dollar sales)

Looks like Sony fans are taking the Bethesda news exceedingly hard.

Condolences to them. Congratulations Nintendo

Great news, though not a surprise. PS5 is still the leader worldwide and it's unlikely to change anytime soon, despite MS impressive efforts.

Ps4 was the fastest selling console before switch. But it was $399. when switch broke the record, it became the fastest selling console ever. But while it sold more units, it was still only $299.

The ps5 sold fewer units but made more money than the switch due to being $200 more expensive.
But...Sony is losing more money on the ps5 than nintendo on the switch

After five years of inflation and a console that's $100 dollars more expensive than its predecessor, at launch, it's not rocket science.

So dollar sale numbers don't matter because the PS5 is more expensive, but unit sale numbers do when the Switch is the cheapest current-gen console on the market. Got it.

what does that have to do with sales numbers?
Sales numbers don't mean shit if the profit is not that good. You could sell 1000 bottles of water at 50. Cents and my sales are better if I sell 500 bottles of water at $1.50

And right nintendo is selling more (they have the stock) and has a better profit margin so this playstation 5 "record" is dumb as f.

nintendo is in its 5th year now. of course they will be making more profit. do you think they made the same profits on day one? it was the fastest selling console at the time. did those numbers not matter back then because they didnt make the same profits they are making today? did those records not matter because the ps4 which was in its 4th year was far more profitable?

we are discussing sales here. I literally pointed out that nintendo sold more, but Sony made more money because their console was more expensive. its the most vanilla statement ever and you are getting your panties in a twist as if i downplayed the nintendo switch record. if anything i downplayed the ps5 records by pointing out they only got there because their console was $200 more expensive.

Nintendo is in the peak year, ps5 just started and has huge demand. Your argument is dumb and unnecessary.

Most expensive Sony console so far so it will make more money
You got owned son, take the L.

No but it's spinning it in the fact ps5 sales are behind PS4 sales currantly and that the ps5 is more expensive. Yes the demand is there and if the stock was there it would outsell the ps4
There is no spin, this is how Mat has been reporting it on his Twitter for a year or more now. You got an issue take it to his twitter instead of spewing the same crap in this thread.

It means they not selling as many consoles due to supply issues still restricted so they spinning it by saying taking more money than befor

where did I mention Sony was spinning it, I meant people on here.

the PS5 has sold less than the PS4 at this point even one of the biggest Sony fans on here is saying the same. Less consoles sold so far.

that's why Sony ain't shouting about consoles just yet
You don't even know what you said, lol.

Isn't the same happening with Xbox?

I think supply constraints have a lot to do with it. But it's pretty certain that the PS5 is outselling both Xboxs combined and Switch is outselling both of them. Again things should change once the supply's fixed.

It is going to be a while before supply is fixed. Maybe we should be working on fixing demand?

Now....everyone repeat after me....

I DO NOT WANT A PS5

So many people hurt by this news. The salt is real.

Now when Sony solves the stock issues and consumers are actually able to get their hands on a PS5, i wonder what their comments will like after Sony announces the PS5 sold the most in both Units and Dollar. It will be a fun thread.

Measuring console sales by dollars sold is a misleading statistic here. The PS5 could sell just over half the units the Wii sold to beat it in dollars sold. Similarly, the PS5 could sell 61% of the units of the Switch and beat it in dollars sold.

Selling tons of consoles is great for the industry as a whole and Sony should be happy with their sales as a whole, but the fact that they are being praised for dollars sold rather than units sold is a sure sign that they are behind in total units sold.

Actually, dollars sales provide good data that you can sell an expensive premium console for $500 like Sony. I doubt any console manufacturer could sell a console at $500 and break sales records like Sony.

Nintendo sells their cheap consoles at no more than $300 and still cant outsell the PS4 at $400 world the last to years when the ps4 was at its peak.

Lets say the switch at the end of its life cycle managed to sell the same as the ps4. Which is more impressive? Hint, The console which price was $400.

So unit sales don't tell the whole picture.

The problem with that line of thinking is that console sales are intended as a one time purchase that are truly profitable with future add on purchases (games, accessories, and the like). As such, provided that the value proposition of the console makes sense (unlike the famous $599.99 PS3j, the actual price doesn't make much of a difference. The only thing that matters in the end is units sold when it comes to consoles.

One doesn't have to be exclusive to another. Both Unit sales and Dollar metrics are important. That's why NPD tracks dollar sales. Dismissing dollars metrics makes for such an ignorant discussion.

Anyways, its only a matter of time until Sony breaks both Units and Dollars records. Lets not kid ourselves, the demand for the ps5 is insane.

I can't wait for people to downplay ps5 sales records when that happens.

I'm not saying it won't be a great selling console—maybe even the best, but the most useful metric here is total units sold. Sony is likely taking a loss on these systems. Their concern is getting millions of consoles out to the market so they can sell each of those units a bunch of games, subscriptions, and digital currencies because that is where the real money is for platform holders . My only point here is that bragging about dollars sold strongly suggests that they are behind in total units sold.

I love the products put out by Sony and Nintendo and strongly wish to see both succeed. I generally don't care about Microsoft's offerings in the gaming space, but I want them to succeed, too. A stronger industry as a whole makes for better games for everyone, but Sony appears to be behind on their units sold compared to where other consoles have been at the moment. It's still a matter of question how that will translate to total sales over the generation.

I suppose it doesn't matter much right now, its pretty clear both consoles are selling really well, and the ps5 is in more demand right now, that much is clear. Well see if that stays the same in light of software delays and market shifts. Seems likely though, not sure if it will be the same as last gen though, probably more like and 85 / 65 thus time around, depending on what Nintendo does.

all supply constrained so we don't know the bigger picture yet. I expect the ps5 to still outsell Xbox though
