Sorority recruiting vid taken down, "worse for women than Donald Trump"

Vast majority of those women in particular are fake blondes.

I was more taken aback that there wasn't a single one that was remotely overweight. Even the sororities at Arkansas would have a number of girls that weren't stick thin.

There was one fat chick that started showing up the near the end of the vid. I don't see how this was all that bad outside of a few ass shots. The swimsuit stuff wasn't excessive and the mascot was the one doing the twerking. Is it really necessary to tear them down and drag them through the mud because they only have one black member?

Let them have fun, makes me miss college. Of course in the span of 10 years most will not have the same body types as they do now.... that damn metabolism ...

I was expecting something raunchy. This is just a bunch of chicks waving at the camera. Objectifying women? That's over the top, IMO.

As for the diversity issue: keep in mind UA is 80% white and 54% girls. Then remember that the Greek system is overwhelmingly white across the country. THEN remember that this is Alabama, a notoriously racist state.

It seems to me things like this won't change until the entire culture of the state does. Being this is Alabama, that'll probably take another couple of centuries.

Seriously. Videos like this one and all of the below from other public school sororities makes me wish I went there just for the views. Oh how I miss college

These videos are made every year by tons of sororities. This one is only getting heat because someone wanted to make a name for themselves by complaining.

For the record I do not have these saved but Barstool Sports does a rundown on each of them when they pop up each year.

These girls are just having fun."

That's honestly, my first thought. I don't see a problem with the video until the "lack of minority" was pointed out. Also:

Why would they make a "recruiting video" aimed at horny teen boys for a sorority ?

Yeah, that was my second thought. "Yeah, let's advertise ourselves as fun and breezy and totally willing to get down the boys."

I'm slightly confused that anyone is even slightly surprised by the content of the video. Don't nearly all movies set in college depict soroities exactly like that? I realise they're usually exaggerating but still.

Its essentially this. We are all pretty and fun. If you come join us, you can be pretty and fun too!

It's like any advertising video. They just don't have a million people doing test screenings so no one gets their feelings hurt. Ads aren't supposed to be real.

Seriously, try and imagine what an actual McDonald's ad would look like if they used actual customers and the reasons that they are going. I don't think its a group of 25 year olds in great shape with one from each race/ethnicity buying McDonalds for a romp to the beach.

I'm unsure how this video is advertising their willingness to "get down the boys."

I agree that "white" shouldn't be used as a negative descriptor.

But, I did want to address the other point-- honestly? I mean, as someone that actually was Panhellenic back in my undergrad days... you can't honestly believe that these chicks are poor (or that most of them aren't from at least comfortable families), or that there's no racial preference for pledges, especially in a school like Ole Miss.

I have heard that the "better" black chicks (the well-off, educated, pretty ones) tend to rush black sororities. Of this I am much more unsure whether or not it's true, but it's definitely something to keep in mind. I do feel like at my school, many of the prettier and wealthier Asian girls tended to rush Asian sororities. Self-segregation is pretty strong, even on college campuses.

Panhellenic??

I expected this to be overtly sexual, but it's really just a group of girls hanging out and having fun. It's actually pretty gross that someone is labelling this video as "worse for women than Donald Trump." That's a ridiculous amount of pressure and shaming, to place on a group of college girls who made an innocent video about having fun.

they shot a taylor swift video? I don't really care how diverse the video is, that's on them but lol the video looks funny at best, and outright late nite MT...well i guess these days Fuse video block bad.

Vid made me cringe. Bunch of shit-for-brains barbie brats who wouldn't last two seconds in the real world without daddies money. Thought this kind of thing only existed in Hollywood movies, sad to see it's a reality.

This is what college girls actually look like though. And Men's fitness ranked Alabama as the 10th fittest college in the US.

Like Shang Tsung said, "Treasure these moments."

"we only interact with black people if they play football"

You actually win the thread. I thought this was the problematic part of the video. Not that WASPs interact with other WASPs. The fact that you were the only one who mentioned that is also a problem. I don't think I could live "colorblind". You'll miss out on subtleties as blatant as that.

Ah man, I think I want to stay ignorant on this stuff from now on. I'm fed up of seeing happiness only to have it deconstructed until it's based on someone else's misery.
I don't think that's necessarily fair to the girls in the video. Like I said, I can't speak for this particular sorority, but it seems like progress was being held up by alumnae, not the current students.

Do you remember Melanie Gotz, the sorority sister who wanted to admit a black woman into her sorority, only to be told that the alumnae had blocked that woman's bid?

http://nation.time.com/2013/09/20/university-of-alabama-integrates-sororities/
The present finally rejected the past at the University of Alabama. On Friday, more than a week after a story about persistent segregation in the school’s sorority system attracted national attention, multiple African American women accepted bids to join traditionally white sororities. The move ends the last bastion of segregation at the tradition-bound southern university.

“I’m kind of still in shock and awe,” says Melanie Gotz, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, one of the sororities to admit its first black member. “It doesn’t seem like history has happened, but it did, and it’s amazing.”

The news erupted across student and alumni social media networks after a picture of Halle Lindsay wearing an Alpha Gamma Delta T-shirt was shared on Instagram. Cami McCant accepted a bid to join Kappa Alpha Theta, breaking the racial barrier at another traditionally white sorority. The news of their bids was first reported by al.com. As of Friday evening, at least four black women and two other minorities had accepted bids to join historically white sororities, according to a video statement by University President Judy Bonner.
So it's not perfect, but it's improving.

And now you know the rest of the story. /Paul Harvey

side rant: And fuck all the ignorant motherfuckers who come in here spouting shit like "oh it's alabama giggle giggle giggle those girls must be racist because they're from alabama and everybody from alabama is a mouth-breathing product of incest who just doesn't know any better but the people where i live are all living harmoniously in a post-racial world where everyone gets along regardless of the color of their skin and nobody is ever treated lesser or different here even by cops because we live in a wondrous land with lollipop trees and rivers made of chocolate"

Worse for golden retrievers than Donald Trump?

Student house attracts similar people.

News at eleven.

Damn I wouldn't mind going to one of their parties, they's fine as f

While it's true that certain fraternities and sororities tend to be pretty hostile towards minoroties, I don't really see the big deal with the video in particular.

Honestly it would be worse if they pulled some token black person into this stupid video.

Boy, wait til you see the same video in OP that everyone else saw. There was a token black person. And it seems a couple of others saw the one black person in the vid and made note of it. All of those posters were black and/or post in BCT so I'm not surprised.

Sure it does. I don't understand the appeal of Greek culture, and I don't understand why people find vapid basics with fake blonde hair and orange tans attractive physically. It seems trite and artificial to me.
Your avatar looks like someone painted Jayden Smith on a varnished egg. You don't get to talk about taste.

Yeah, maybe I was too harsh in my last post. I'm just a bit fed up about how things always turn out on here (in America?). I do appreciate the effort you took to explain the broader situation to me, thank you.

Edit: Oh and your rant gave me a good giggle too. Twas very true.

That was cringe as fuck. Glad this shit isn't a thing at Universities in my country.

I'm afraid they did hahaha

I mean, it was a boring-ass video but there isn't really anything "wrong" with it.

Should they try to increase diversity in their sorority? Probably.

Is that a problem with the video? Eh, not really.

While for the life of me I can't understand why videos of the sort and ones especially as lavish exist, I don't really find anything offensive there?

No problem at all. I'm not a fan of some of UA President Judy Bonner's other policies and decisions, but she's been on point in helping the current students pry control of their organizations away from the old alumnae and admit the students THEY want to spend their college years with, whether they be black, white, brown or orange.
Edit: Oh and your rant gave me a good giggle too. Twas very true.
It's like every thread involving Alabama turns into this somehow.

Could they use more women that are not blonde and white? Sure. But really, nothing wrong with the vid.

I saw a decent amount of brunettes lol. That said, many women I know color their hair blonde as well. You'd be surprised at how many people are actually truly blonde.

Honest question, what's the problem here?

I'm struggling to understand the issue with this video
Yeah same here. Maybe it's just my already low opinion of greek life taking over here but I'm not quite sure what makes this so offensive as to be taken down.

The first thing that popped in my mind when I saw the video yesterday was "why the fuck is everyone blond." Reminds me of that video posted by Vice about racist sororities at UA.

Though, I have some highschool classmates that go to UA and they are black so I know its not a blatant racism problem and something more complex and subtle.

You can thank rural Alabama for that. Once you leave from a city like Montgomery, you have Confederate flags hitched on the back of pickups.
