I've held my tongue on how mediocre I think these modern Spiderman games are

The PSX ones are better games in every way other than graphics I've been meaning to make a video about this one day breaking this down

but playing these games depress the hell out of me a lot of potential just felt on the table for a dumbed down hand holdy experience

They might not be 9 out of 10 ten games, but no need to say ridiculous takes. Those old Spiderman games were terrible.

Loved the first and enjoyed the second. First was a 9 for me, second is around 8.x.I need to replay it someday to fully decide how i feel about it.
Agreed.

I think if the sequel is as good as the original, I'm ok with the same score. I love Yakuza, Persona, Dragon Quest and so many other IP that rarely change a lot between entries, so I don't really add this whole idea that it must be WILDLY different from the last or something, if its not broke, don't change it.

I'm find with what they did and like what they added to the sequel. Easily by default the best Spiderman series to ever exist

The deaf girl section was even worse than the atreus section in GOTW and it had a bit too much pandering.

Well...maybe. I don't know if I'd argue that is what they are doing for a few reasons, the Spiderman IP is known for this, its literally a person who is a nerd, a nobody who gets powers and uses science, the whole idea is that anyone can be a hero in their own right type of thing, many examples from the comics, to the 90's shows all support this btw, so this is kinda common place. If it was something they have NEVER done, then maybe I see your point, but the concept of Spiderman has had theses ideas before

Spiderman reveals his identity to this kid who has leukemia.

This concept is later remade with a little girl in the Spiderman 90's cartoon series (fucking PEAK Spiderman btw lol)

I don't see how this relates to the heavy handed woke garbage we got in the game at all. This episode was fantastic btw.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I can't really say until I've completed it, I've platinumed the original and I've had SM2 since launch.
I played a bit and never returned to it.
It's missing something...

I disagree. I highly enjoyed them. I hated the PS2/PS3 and PS4 ones. All rubbish

Spider-Man 2 on PSX and Separation Anxiety on Genesis are prob the top two Spider-man games

I find this to be the case with a lot of modern Sony cinematic games, they're adored by critics for their fancy presentation, but once you go back to them after all the hype is over you're left scratching your head as to why these games are rated around 90 or higher. It just shows how far presentation and polish can take you when it comes to critical reception.

My honest take is this. I loved the game. The clear DEI inclusions and MJ parts sucked but still I felt the gameplay was on par with the first two games minus two things. I felt I got hung up trying to wall crawl on some buildings more than past games. Also I felt the loss of suit specific powers. Those were my only real 2 complaints outside the obvious ones.

I tend to go easier on games though cause when I have fun I can forgive a lot.

The problem with SM2 is that it constantly throws waves of enemies after EVERY event to the point it looks like a parody. And dilutes the pacing significantly.

They upped the difficulty which is fine with me, I like the Souls games, but it's done via tons and tons of goons and it became so damn repetitive.

Also who tf asked for all these combos and pressing 3 buttons and shit? You can say "just don't use them then", and at one point I stopped breaking my fingers on the controller, but because the game stopped having goons primarily in the side missions, and throws them in the main story every time Peter even farts, now
1. the pacing is meandering
2. it's repetitive and boring to get to the next nugget of the story, which is what I want to see primarily.

Yeah great city and population density, too bad you gameplay and pacing sucks big doinks this time, Insomniac. Saying this as someone who never replays video games, but did SM1, yet I've never finished 2... Got to the halfway point and my enjoyment of the game was sadly about 6/10. The first game for me is a 9/10.

P.S. I absolutely hate the Spider-Legs that MAGICALLY APPEAR on Peter's costume when you perform a combo with them. It does not get any kiddy-er than this fckn lmao :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Just my humble opinion but this is one of the most vomit inducing games ever made. The amount op lecturing they crammed in is unbelievable. Played the opening scene, got awareness of all the political correctness crammed in, and sold is faster than a shit leaving my ass after a workday. Fuck Insomniac.

First game is a 7 at best. Got the plat, the traversal is great but the gameplay isn’t and the open world is full of repetitive copy paste busywork. Have the sequel installed for one of my kids but I’ll probably never complete it.

My Metacritic says 90, not 92. But the game is farer from a 90 than Spider-Man is Far From Home. I would rate the game itself a 85 and all the woke bullshit especially Superman Mary Jane is an auto -10. But to be fair, most console exclusive games are overrated.

Haven’t played the second but I thought SM and MM were both pretty great. From what I’ve seen traversal and the switching between Miles and Peter in this one looks phenomenal, so it’s not hard for me to believe a higher score. And then there’s Venom on top of it all who’s always a treat.

But I’m a sucker for SM in general.

Both are good games, not great games to me. The first game is definitely better than the 2nd.
I never played Spider-Man 2, but given that I wasn't exactly impressed with the first (some decent core mechanics but overall bloated, tedious and repetitive as hell), reading this is more than a bit discouraging.

P.S. Bit of a sidenote, as I'm definitely late to the party with this, but I have to say that I'm absolutely not a fan of the idea of the "wingsuit". No matter how convenient or fun it could be to use, I feel like it remains a mismatch for the "core fantasy" of playing as THE Spider-Man.

A fine game. With some pretty bad flaws. MJs face.

Overall. Remove the shit side content, the dirty they did to miles and the DEI shit and I'd day it was a 92 but yeah probably mid 80s seems fair for rhw game we got.

I honestly haven't had the stomach to play these games since they changed Peter's beautiful face from the first release.

Gameplay wise, they added more combat options and traversal options, progression is slightly better. For me, the story is a bit of a letdown compared to the first. The pacing towards the end is rushed, and having 2 protagonists doesn't help.

I really enjoyed the first one but very soon I realised that the side stuff is dull and just focused on main story - the game just flows so much better this way. That said, the game ends where it should end, because I started to feel the traversal fatigue and the fighting mechanics were this close to becoming a chore. Solid 8/10 but absolutely no desire to play any more of it. The sequel would have to be substantially better and fresh for me to show any interest in it. I will get my old PS5 from a relative next week - maybe I will give it a try but I will probably just spend all my time with Helldivers 2.

Well, personally speaking I was very disappointed in this game and I actually loved SM1. It's not a bad game, but definitely underwhelming. SM2 felt like a very safe sequel that didn't do too much to evolve its core formula. When you look at how Arkham Asylum went to Arkham City and then to Arkham Knight, you could feel the evolution between each game while still remaining faithful to its core. I didn't felt it here. There were some good improvements in combat and traversal I really liked, but this wasn't enough to elevate this experience to me. The idea of alternating between two Spider-Mans sounded fun, but honestly it didn't felt as such pivotal change I hoped it will be

The main story didn't grabbed my attention, some of the story choices for Peter's and MJ's characters especially were more frustrating than interesting. Side quests were boring and a chore to play. Main villains were great but their appearance was so brief you never really felt their presence. I don't know who thought about making Kraven a main villain and then instead of making him an integral part of this storyline decided it's much better to have players to fight with armies of his goons and henchmans. And if they wouldn't be there, the game wouldn't even have any enemies to fight before the endgame segment lol Venom was cool, but his appearance was way too short. The entire third act was rushed, at least in my opinion

Less polished than the first and with there being less side content too it felt like less love was put into it.

Combat is both better and worse. They added a lot more moves but the gadgets in 2 are OP and too spammable. They tried to compensate by upping the difficulty but it resulted in a less balanced and mashier feel ..shame because if they had just kept the gadgets the way they were in SM1 it would've been a great system with the new moves.

Graphics Im torn on. Some things are clearly better but some stuff from MM looked just as good. Can't help but be a little let down considering the promised trailer visuals vs actual game...also it was PS5 only shoulda had more detail in the city buildings. On the other hand its one of the best looking games out there and the RT is even more impressive than first.

Traversal stuff is incredible the first open world where fast travel isn't even needed due solely to the speed of traversal, all while not losing any detail as you fly around the city.

Brooklyn was a nice addition but we needed more new areas than that ...or a greater overhaul of NYC- they got lazy the way they just imported the city

Story was really well done for the first half but started to feel rushed and the Venom stuff didn't do it for me.

Wokeness was totally rediculous and made the game worse ..big surprise..

Still a good game despite all the negatives but could've been better ..kinda like Ragnarok...coulda and shoulda

Puzzles in SM2 were even more braindead than the first one ..Sony and their "puzzles" ..

It felt almost like an expansion when a sequel is supposed to be bigger and better than what came before ...felt like something in between MM and SM1

Been so many games like this throughout the generation. Shoulda, woulda, coulda ...still good games but i expected more.

Both spiderman games are good games but like anything Insomniac makes, they're not great games. And NYC has to be the most bland open world I've ever played, there's just nothing interesting to do. For me, it's the very definition of an 80 on metacritic.

It should be a 7 at best, like many games with 90+ on mc.

First one was much better story wise.

All of Sony's sequels since Last of Us 2, have arguably been worse than the predecessors, or at least failed to iterate.

I enjoyed this but it was written like an episode of Blue's Clues. Purely woke and safe space dialogue afraid to be even remotely edgy.

It is a 7/10 great, and a rehash of Spider-Man 1. Definitely played many better games on Steam

I liked the first one and the addon. But Spiderman 2 ist just not a good game. Insomniac needs to evolve with part 3.

Not played 2 but didnt rate the first one as highly as most. Decent enough game but I thought the Batman games did the super hero fantasy better.

Will have a bash at 2, at some point.

I don't think so at all. Those two games just excel at zipping around the beautiful city and kicking ass! Just that alone was good enough for me. However, I did all.

I have to admit I only played the first game for about an hour. I got this overpowering sense that swinging around the city and beating up a bunch of enemies, I had experienced 80%+ of what the game had to offer without investing the additional 10 or whatever hours. Nothing wrong with it, I see it as a fine game that does what it set out to do.

Never played 2, not very interested.

Felt too much the same gameplay wise to the previous 2 games, but with a much much shittier story. Also to not only ignore complaints of terrible MJ sections in the first game, but to make even worse ones? That is fucking insulting.

It was awful. The gameplay was pretty good, but god those long ass boring boss fights where each boss had three or more phases with little variation.
Not to mention all the "woke" stuff (which I usually don't care about, but it's REALLY in your face at parts).

I don't know about SM2 but SM1 is so fucking bad.... fight 100x goons, swing, fight 150x goons, swing, fight 200x goons, swing - repeat over and over.

And gameplay mechanics aren't even that good, I forces myself to complete this fucking slog. I don't know why but I also completed Miles Morales and it's definitely better in most aspects.

I will just avoid SM2 and future games...
