Combat, traversal, enemy variety, location variety, weapon variety etc. Were all superior but pace, writing and story were worse in all 3.

Very much this. All 3 games are obvious upgrades in everything but writing and we all know the main cause of that. Forbidden West is maybe the exception because it has far better side quests than the original but the main quest lacks any push forward aside from the ending and it just doesnt have that huge twist the first game had.

They might not be 9 out of 10 ten games, but no need to say ridiculous takes. Those old Spiderman games were terrible.
Spider-Man 2 the movie game is still a superior web slinging experience. The webs are physics objects and it shows, additionally you can swing into helicopters and wrap around the Statue of Liberty. For some reason open world Spider-Mans lose less swing able city and objects every single game compared to the one PS2/Xbox/GC and I have no idea why

Yeah...i should've explained better. Agreed with everything you said. Something about how those games were written was...not good. The Atreus parts from Ragnarok it's like they were written by a separate team. Its bizarre.

THAT SAID...gameplay wise they were better on their respective sequels. Also i feel like Spider-Man 2 had such amazing last 5 hours....they were chaotic as hell in the best way possible.

Ragnarok i actually prefer the simpler game from 2018 to the level design from Ragnarok.

I thought the plot in fw was pretty good for 2/3 but the finale was rushed, the baddies were weak, and the next big baddie just lame as fuck, lame final boss aswell.

The game was also more woke than the first game, you had strong female warriors in the first one aswell but the sequel goes way overboard, it is not nearly as in your face as sp2 but noticeable enough, the best warriors in the game are literally 3 chicks.

Aloy
Regalla
Old woman that apparently is still the best cage melee fighter ever
Plus all the other women in charge of entire villages, plus the baddies being basically rich capitalists.

As i said, not as in your face as "white rich guy steal stuff from black music museum" panderman 2, but definitely worse than horizon 1.
Maybe you are gonna disagree on this last note, i know i tried to convince myself that people were being harsh but it's definitely feel like dei checklist sometimes.

I wonder how much theyre getting payed for these checklist stuff. Its so obvious when you place these games one next to another and their sequels, that none of the bad things were there in the first place but an afterthought, a checklist.

-mandatory diminish the main character and make him look weak compared the his female companion
-mandatory females stronger than the majority of males
-mandatory trans character
-mandatory handicapped character
-mandatory side/mission with female black character
-etc.

Spider-man 2 is probably the worst offender no doubt, they didnt even bother with that museum mission and the deaf black chick lmao, would've made sense for Peter or Miles to help her paint stuff, but to play as her was just absolute jarring and out of place.

Combat/gameplay is great. Story in part 2 starts dragging on for a little too long.

I got what I wanted and expected, so to me they are great games to play.
I did like the variety in gadgets more in part 1. I love experimenting and using everything I have in games.

Mr Reasonable

Completely Unreasonable
The game needed 7.2m units sold to make a profit and it's very very possible that it'll be close to 20m. units sold by the end of the year.

Overrated or not, I think Sony is very happy about its performance.

I liked just like the first one, I'm still seeing people disliking the MJ parts, but I found them to be not bad not good.

I always enjoy a game more when I know how Sony feels about it. That's where the enjoyment comes from, imo.

Well...maybe. I don't know if I'd argue that is what they are doing for a few reasons, the Spiderman IP is known for this, its literally a person who is a nerd, a nobody who gets powers and uses science, the whole idea is that anyone can be a hero in their own right type of thing, many examples from the comics, to the 90's shows all support this btw, so this is kinda common place. If it was something they have NEVER done, then maybe I see your point, but the concept of Spiderman has had theses ideas before

Spiderman reveals his identity to this kid who has leukemia.

This concept is later remade with a little girl in the Spiderman 90's cartoon series (fucking PEAK Spiderman btw lol)

I didn't mean it as the deaf girl being pandering but reading it back I can see how it could've been interpreted that way. That's my bad, sorry.

I have no issues with the character itself, I just did not enjoy playing as her.

What I meant was that the section sucked ass and that the game had perhaps a bit too much pandering for my liking. (All the pride stuff, blm, the non binary doctor etc) things that I frankly as a non american don't care about as with pretty much all current culture war nonsense.

in hindsight, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first. Got a bit long in the tooth, I think Venom gave it a 5 point bump in reviews just because he was in it. It was honestly my least favorite part.

A copy and paste rehash of the original with the same open world issues as before, a much worse story and quite a bit of pandering forcibly injected....
Still a good game but definitely not a 90+ game, more a 7/10, imho.

Never played it but the even the first game was a bit overrated too. Had to force myself to finish it. The city and the encounters are just so uninteresting and the way they break the pacing with the MJ missions really sucked.
Hearing that they doubled down on those segments as well as adding weird mini game stuff, a 2nd protagonist and on top of that all the forced Sweet Baby influence makes it an easy skip for me.

First of all, its at 90 metacritic. Not 92.

90 is fine for this game. The user score is 8.8 so that tells you everything. This game is the most woke game of all time but people liked it so much they didnt even care.

Genuinely the biggest disappointment i’ve had in gaming.

Game released with tons of bugs and that’s not even an understatement. Audio disappearing, game constantly freezing, side missions not playing as intended and so much more.

Story was bad. Opening half is good then the second half and final act are severely and obviously rushed. One of the worst adaptations of Venom out there.

Half the side content was just as bad and repetitive as the first game despite them saying it would be dramatically improved.

Game didn’t utilise both main playable characters well at all. So much wasted potential for Miles which also fits in with the story being pretty crap (and too short for its own good).

I could go on and on but it’s nowhere near a 92 MC game. Besides the traversal, which is unreal, most of the rest of the game is disappointing.

And I say this as someone who has the first game in my top 10 all-time fave games.

What a shame.

the first one is amazing, the second lacked something. don't know what that is, maybe just focus on Peter and leave miles to his own games? not sure its that but it certainly not as good as the first.

also to many bugs on release to, frustrating to the players in the first few weeks

Absolutely loved the first game but it became long in the tooth by the end. I couldn't stay interested in 2. The gameplay is so overdone at this point and the story having no teeth didn't do it any favors. Not sure if I'll pick it up again.

It's the weakest of the 3 in terms of story/character writing but the best in terms of technology and gameplay.

Miles probably the strongest game of all three when accounting for all elements.

The amount of pandering made my eyes roll.
I'm done after this one as for me there's just one Spiderman and that's Peter Parker.

PS: Fuck MJ's dog shite missions.

I loved the first one (despite MJ being the most embarrassingly insufferable character ever) and replayed it multiple times since 2018, bought and played two hours of Miles Morales and never went back, and even though I'm sure I would love the combat and traversal once more, I have no desire to play SM2 for multiple reasons including that cheap-ass looking dude pretending to be my Peter.

Real reason I'm commenting in this thread however is that, in the unlikely but NOT impossible chance any developer working in the industry happens to read these pages, I want them to know they should completely ignore the entirety of the post below:

The problem with SM2 is that it constantly throws waves of enemies after EVERY event to the point it looks like a parody. And dilutes the pacing significantly.

They upped the difficulty which is fine with me, but it's done via tons and tons of goons and it became so damn repetitive.

Also who tf asked for all these combos and pressing 3 buttons and shit? You can say "just don't use them then", and at one point I stopped breaking my fingers on the controller, but because the game stopped having goons primarily in the side missions, and throws them in the main story every time Peter even farts, now
1. the pacing is meandering
2. it's repetitive and boring to get to the next nugget of the story, which is what I want to see primarily.

Yeah great city and population density, too bad you gameplay and pacing sucks big doinks this time, Insomniac. Saying this as someone who never replays video games, but did SM1, yet I've never finished 2... Got to the halfway point and my enjoyment of the game was sadly about 6/10. The first game for me is a 9/10.

P.S. I absolutely hate the Spider-Legs that MAGICALLY APPEAR on Peter's costume when you perform a combo with them. It does not get any kiddy-er than this fckn lmao :messenger_tears_of_joy:

As listening to any of this would only achieve making gaming worse, or killing it altogether even.
If someone wants to "primarily see the story", don't like waves of enemies, don't like "all these combos" and "breaking fingers on the controller", only cares for pacing (what pacing? A good videogame pacing requires tons and tons of combat, and then even more combat Drake's Fortune style) and demands videogames, even a damn Spider-Man one, to avoid "it doesn not get any kiddy-er than this fckn lmao".. this person imperatively shouldn’t be in any position to dictate how games are made.

And it's personal for me as pandering to exactly this type of "criticism" killed Uncharted and ruined countless others once-perfect games for me. End of rant.

I’m sure it was a technical achievement, but I was bored to fucking tears. I loved the first game. I really enjoyed Miles Morales. Spiderman 2 felt lame from the start. I kept going for about six hours and surrendered. The side-quests were so incredibly mindless and the writing was dreadful.

I am the last person to complain about pandering, but even I rolled my eyes at the quest where you help a dude get a date.

Sold my copy for almost what I paid, fortunately.

Absolutely. It's the game that made me question if I ever want to play an Insomniac game ever again.
I was excited for Wolverine, but after this…

Just yesterday, I bought my very first Xbox One game: Sunset Overdrive. It was on sale and my friend gave me his old One S. I am willing to bet this is money better spent than on any future Insomniac game at this point.

The problem is, much like their other series Ratchet and Clank, the game has to then rely on it's story as the star attraction since the gameplay was already figured out. If that part ever falters, then it makes the game seem worse. Due to Venom being a badly written character with a below average third arc, it stumbles.

Yea I guess that's true. I personally loved all of that. I really loved how they setup carnage which caught me by surprise but considering what was going on I should have known but they still got me. The only part of the story I didn't like was when Mary Jane turned into the vemon thing I thought that was dumb but it was quick and easy and over quickly.

Spiderman 2 is not as good as the first game imho. The side missions with the deaf girl and the guy wanting help to ask another guy to the prom were vomit inducing to say the least. Mary Jane had a bigger ballsack than Peter as well and he is replaced of course at the end of the game so Miles Morales can now be Spiderman. A bit to much for me.

Your correct. Despite all the hate it got from Sony fans, Sunset OD is a great game and classic Insomniac experience. There are some dlc expansions that are quite fun. It’s a great open world game and one of the better games from that gen. Enjoy it! Instead of Insomniac going all in on Marvel shite they should have made a proper sequel for the PS5 or at least a remaster of the original. That would have been much better and a nice change of pace from all the superhero games they seem hell bent on making now.

absolutely...

it doesn't expand much from the first game in terms of gameplay, and the first one is an actual story written by a normal person. the first game is still extremely playable and holds up so the story makes it an infinitely better time than the sequel, there's even actual emotional moments in it too.

time has made me go from loving SM2 at launch, to criticising it to fully hating it (post concord) it's the most infiltrated piece of crap game and you'd be a fool to touch anything from insomniac again (like wolverine) because there games are gonna be plagued with mediocrity with the more modern audience hires they make. (both miles and SM2 were pretty buggy at launch, which was never something i would associate with insom before)
