Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Reviews Thread

How do they do that? An average is way above 6.9

And complaining about level variety? Wtf, all the themes look extremely different, how many games have that. And nowhere in the interview they mention the amazing graphics and physics, just the downside of both. And the lack of "back-up tech with substence" wtf?

And design 6.5, presentation 7.2? http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2008/255/reviews/933155_20080912_screen004.jpg COME ON

I also love the contradictions. GT says the sound isn't all that, IGN says it's amazing; Gamespot says, I quote "This is the best Star Wars story in years.", while IGN says it's nice and GT hardly mentions it; IGN praises the cutscenes, while GT bashes them; etc.

Different reviewers have different opinions??? Outrage!!!

I see the game's release date is tomorrow. Did you at least play the game to be outraged like that by the GameTrailers review?

7-high 7's sounds about right and to me thats not a bad thing (there have been some horrid Star Wars games)

Got the Wii version and my friend got the PS2 version, not a huge step down as I thought it would be compared to the PS3 (I mean yes there is a great difference and you would have to be blind not to see it), if you are wanting great detail then go to the HD versions.

But I am liking this version a lot better, the controls are solid and since the environments are smaller with less stuff (which would seem like a bad thing) it makes it much easier to utilize the force.

For example in the PS3 demo I was picking up all sorts of stuff which was fun and made a lot of mayhem but it seems in the Wii version (and from what I have seen the PS2 version as well) you can actually have a bit more focus with less items which echoes what IGN said the last 2 weeks.

Starting off as Vader though is kind of a tease since you are not nearly that powerful when you begin, but I guess it gets you accustomed to the way things work without needing to worry about life.

I havent played it yet but Its a shame this game is getting such average reviews...had alot of potential. Im still gonna pick it up though as Ive been following this game for quite awhile.

Look, a Prey clone. Pass!

One day, Sysgen, we would have called BioShock, Half Life 2 and heck, even Portal "Doom Clones", because at that hypothetical time, Doom was the big-fucking-daddy and the small number of other games that shared its tropes were seen as copy cats. Now, they are just FPS games.

So, with BioShock, Battlefield: Bad Company, Too Human, Space Siege and many more featuring the "enemies stay dead when you bite it" mechanic, I reccomend that we move past "Prey Clone" and call it something unqiue.

I like "Grave Rush"

Nothing surprising in the reviews.

I still plan on picking up my preorder tomorrow. One of only three games I'll buy for the rest of the year.

Damn fuckin' shame...

Wait, what platform?

Doesn't matter.

Still a damn fuckin' shame.

Well, most of the devs are in fact laid off. I'm sure Torres is still shitting things up around LucasArts, though.

As for the other half of the quote, chances are it'll sell huge. Demo's been top 10 in Live activity for multiple weeks, reports from retail are the preorders are up there.

Well I'm still picking up my Playstation3 sku tommorow after work. I'll be sure to give some thorough impressions

Don't know why seemingly so many sites are getting the 360 version, as the PS3 version is more than up to par
It certainly sounds ALOT better with it's DTS support...

Too bad this game isn't sounding as great as it was hyped up to be. I love how a magazine/website will hype up a game to be the best thing since sliced bread, then give it an average review. I guess this won't be a game that I'll be "suffering" through.
:D Happened with Lair too. But yes, Force Unleashed tech looked like the best ever in 2005/6.

I think that Indiana Jones is still being worked on inside Lucas Arts, although given we've seen nothing on the game for what seems like an age, I'm not exactly confident that it'll;

a) Be good
b) Be

The demo was very average to begin with. Sure it looked rather nice, but the gameplay was mediocre at best. Fun for a little while, but grew stale quickly. I *might* pick this up once it reaches the bargain-bins, though.

You might want to not listen to the people who don't work at LucasArts.

I work there. It's not true. The dev team is there, and if you want to meet them, come to Best Buy at 1717 Harrison St. tonight at 7pm.

You might want to stop believing everything you read on the Internet.

never said I believed it =P

The DS game is pretty shitty. They tried real hard, and the 3D is nice, but having to use a D-Pad in 3D sucks and the force powers are far far far far less fun without the Physics.

Between a 7 and a 8 is the fair score image for the game, obviously each review will make its own points.

I say that because it's the ballpark for a decent/good game nowadays, and that's where Star wars fits, it's an uneven experience that can be a lot of fun, looks fucking great, but has some problems with level design, and with the combat itself when it doesn't rely on pushing people around and using force powers in general.

One thing i'm particularly disappointed is with the story, here it is, good characters, good premise, fantastic art direction, good voice acting, the writing is good but the story never really "unleashes" itself to something big, or epic, or just "fulfilling" in general as it seems to race to its conclusion.

The star destroyer sequence ends up being lame because it's a fairly simple event that doesn't even reach a gameplay climatic moment since you only do half of it, the other half is a cutscene.

That said, it's a much better realized experience than shit like Too Human so i can't help but laugh a bit at the Chris Kohler's review, but that's part of it, if we agreed with all reviewers we wouldn't need all of them.

Rent if you aren't too interested on it, buy if you are a star wars fan. It's not as good as Jedi Outcast 2 unfortunately and the story doesn't touch KOTOR, but even the 2nd trilogy didn't so, take that as you may.

concured

...though I do like Too Human quite alot

Seems to me Chris Roeper's review from IGN, echoes my opinions the most

No surprise after demo, disappointing for me, a modern 'Psi ops' in the Star wars universe and nothing more...I'm disappointed.

If it's not too much to ask could you include some serious(semi really) info as far as the audio goes on the PS3 version in your impressions?

If you only buy three games for the rest of the year, make sure this isn't one of them. Seriously, is there no Blockbuster near you? You will play this game for 2-3 days and never want to touch it again. Not really worth the asking price, even for a Star Wars fan.

Star Wars nerd. My game room is full of Star Wars Lego. Given the chance to play a Jedi who actually wrecks shop instead of being all goody two-shoes, I'm always in. Hell, I played a SWG Jedi up to the Knight level before LA turned it into a poorly-crafted WoW clone.

I've played through the demo probably a dozen times, and it's not getting old. If the game is really only six hours long I'll probably play through twice in the first week.

I'm not limiting myself for financial reasons, there's only three games coming out that I'm interested enough in to take me away from the stuff I'm already playing.

I welcome you to holiday 2008. :lol

At least its a disappointment and not a genuinely awful game (We've still got that one to look forward to...as well as first major delay :D )

Sure

So like Burnout Paradise, Battlefield: Bad Company and some others titles
The devs added DTS support
....and it just sounds sooo much better. I played the 360 and PS3 demo back to back quite alot (they're still sitting on my harddrives), and while yeah I give the 360 the visual edge with it's more detailed textues in places, I find the sound overall flat in comparision to the PS3 version

Examples:

- LFE hits from things like Force pushing doors to explosions just have more "oomph" and range to them. They're really subdued on 360. I'd have to turn my receiver up

- Channel seperation is clearer and more distinct

- There's overall more dynamic range to everything. Highs are higher, lows are lower

Hope this helps

.

Yep I still play the demo too as well

Guess I'm easily entertained....shit I played the Stranglehold Demo soooo many fucking times! :lol

It's really the Advent Rising/Crackdown/Mercs2/The Outfit/etc. realm of games that have that simple gameplay hook that I just get addicted too.

It's not a "major" disappointment anyway. The reason people were/are hyped is because it's Star Wars and it's of decent quality. The demo was fairly fun, but people know what to expect now. The reviews coming in are good.

Have mine preordered through Amazon, hope that street-date delivery thing works.

Given the release schedules for most big games this fall being so close together, I may be in the same situation. There are six to eight games shipping from October to December that I have an interest in, but realistically, I'll only be playing one or two of them, and burning money on the rest only to see them sit on the shelf until January, something I did a lot last year, is not something I want to repeat.

I'll be picking this up. The only thing that concerns me is the length of the game, which is disappointing, but between the GoW-like gameplay and the design of the main character, as well as what looks to be a great story, I think it'll be worth it. And it certainly wouldn't be the first 7-8ish title I've had a blast with. Last year my favorite non-AAA title was Jericho...which I loved, even though it was fairly short.

See, to me it doesn't feel like a rush job. It just has a feel that this really was the best they could come up with. We kept hearing that they wanted to make a game where you could "Kick ass with the force" but they never actually went into details on how to do that, apart from having lots of glass environments, doors which do little more than buckle when you press B and rooms filled with a variety of boxes.

I wasn't expecting that much from the game, I had a feeling it was going to land slap-bang in the middle of "Decidedly Average" territory. Without a multiplayer mode I imagine that after Xmas stores will be full to the brim of pre-owned copies, which is when second hand prices should plummet and I'll happily pick it up (£10 or less, no more)

This had the potential of becoming the best Star Wars game to date. i don't think it was the best they could come up with. i think they missed an opportunity here. I'm sad, cause i was hoping they were going for the extra mile with this game. they didn't.

So were down to expecting games to be mediocre now and being fine with it....

~6 or ~7 out of 10 sounds about right for this.

Definitely one for the fans, but regular gamers are better off waiting for the other big titles to hit this fall.

I never knew this was poised to be some big huge 9.0 game, didn't the whole staff get shit canned?

Given the level of production values put in this, it's clear that they should've fared better in the gameplay department, it's not like it was hard to follow other dev's lead and deliver a more fluid combat system for example.

Considering they delayed it how many times? I expected better to be honest.

Its good to hear that LucasArts still has a dev team. I visited the San Rafael office a few years ago when they put me in KOTOR II. They seemed like a great bunch of people. I may still check out The Force Unleashed, especially since Toys R Us is offering a $20 gift card with purchase tomorrow...

Been playing the PS3 version over the weekend, and the game is just a fun hack & slash with lightsabers and force powers. The graphics are pretty average and I've had some issues with the controls and camera (especially during boss battles), but other than that, I've had a lot of fun with it.

I want to get it but I'm broke, only had money for rock band 2 and a drum throne...I'll probably pick it up once I can get it for like 40

THe relatively low scores comes as a surprise to me, I mean, I don't know much about the game, but just this morning one of my colleagues asked me if I knew something about this game because according to him it was getting "rave reviews"...
