Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Reviews Thread

IGN Wii review is up. Bozon gave it a 7.8

Review tone doesn't match the score, but I'll take it anyways.

Hope Clone Wars fairs much better, Boz seemed optimistic when it came to Krome.

It looks promising from this review. Is this the only Wii review? The others looked like xbox and ps3 only.

Nintendo Power: 7.5

Eurogamer (?): 7.0

Yeah, porting the Wii version from the PS2 was a huge mistake, IMO. I wish they had ported down to the PS2 from the Wii instead. Seems like the game really suffers from this decision.

They were entirely different versions by entirely seperate teams at Krome. I'll dig up an interview.

IGN: Nice. So when plotting out a game, do you have specific teams in specific areas, or do you have multiple teams spanning regions, or even multiple teams within one region? What's the breakdown?

Walsh: There are teams within each region, so for example the PS2 Force Unleashed was done in Brisbane, while the Wii version was done in Melbourne, and the PSP was done in Adelaide.

IGN: Ok wow! So anyone freaking out that the PS2 and Wii versions are just quick ports know the real story. Full teams for each, different regions of the world…

Walsh: Different teams, different locations, yeah. Sometimes we'll do one game all in one studio, but for Force it's such a big game - we had 170 people working on all three SKUs - that we had to break it up, and it worked great that way.

Oh, so the Wii version is the highest rated.

I figured as much from Boz's early comments and the first PS360 reviews.

Well Clone Wars is Wii and DS only , and so far both Kotaku, IGN and 1up (as recent as 9-1) have said very positive things about it. The biggest knock against it is that it does not use Motion +

My biggest complaint is that there's so little content. There's like four stages and ten characters, and no online.

A beefier sequel using the same engine with MotionPlus would definitely be a system-seller, though.

I'm really on the fence about getting this game.

On one hand, i loved the demo. It was alot of fun.

On the other, reviews are kinda saying it's not that great.

Plus, I don't want another heavenly sword, where I've beat the game in two days.

Help me GAF!

This game seems like Heavenly Sword without the pollish.

Yeah they are really pushing the 2 player vs angle, with the promise of Motion+ and the fact the game will sell quite well (being the only Clone Wars game on the market with free advertising by the TV show) we can only hope for a full fledged sequel with actual levels and content

This game moves through the levels VERY fast, if you are looking for length then wait for a drop in price.

Six hours?! Fucking ripoff. I'm gonna spend that money on crysis warhead instead, which is is appropriately budget priced because of it's similar length.

Well I'll probably do my part- 7.5 was the cutoff for Force Unleashed Wii, and 8.0 is my current cutoff for Clone Wars. Hope they exceed that by a large margin. :)

you have no idea how ridiculous this statement....no idea

:lol No I don't but by your statement I get the implication.

I meant length- and pollish-wise.

In terms of people complaining about sound, I had huge issues with sound just dropping out on me. The sound was awesome when it worked, but it dropped out a ton on me. It also dropped out during the end cutscene, so I had to rewatch it and then the sound dropped out again, so then I had to watch the cutscene one more time.

The game is just really missing polish.

BTW - I beat the game in a little over 7 hours on the 360.

I'm a little surprised by the critical mauling this game is getting. It seemed half decent from the demo - somewhere in the mid 7's range, but some of these scores are a lot lower.

Worse scores than Too Human?

I cast no judgements either way, I'm just surprised.

From what I'm hearing, the demo was not a realistic example of what you'll actually be playing.

I just picked-up the Wii version yesterday. Graphically its better than I thought it would be after playing the 360 demo. I figured there was no way they could scale it down to run smoothly but they did a great job. The voice acting turned out GREAT for the wii. I was concerned it would be PS2 aged voice acting but no its right on. I mainly got it for the "wife" factor. I knew she might like it. So she played the first stage and I played the second.

We also did some of the "dueling mode" for a bit. Less fun that I expected. Pretty cool you can just pick each other up at will and throw one another :lol

The force controls are a bit of fun. Moreso than expected. You have more control using the 360 controller. It is pretty awesome on the wii when you do Force Lift and pick the guy up then swing the Wiimote in a throwing motion and you impale the enemy in the air with your light saber :lol

I think the Wii version is actually different than the 360 version. I remember in the 360 demo when you killed someone you got health for it and your force bar regenerated on its own. On the Wii version when you kill someone you get force, and to heal you have to find health canisters. That seemed awkward. Also the leveling up system on wii isn't there you just get points and go buy upgrades to increase your attack.

Oh and REPULSE is fucking AWESOME! :lol

Does this mean Dyack won? I mean, if the whole Force, unleashed, can't beat Too Human... that's quite a statement. I mean, we're talking the Force... unleashed.

There was a complaint in the review about "Why didn't the PSP / PS2 / Wii version use direct cut scenes from the 360 version blah blah blah" - It's because you wouldn't be able to see your costumes, dummy!

Then you are hearing wrong, the demo is exactly what you play. The problem is that it goes by very fast and does not have much difficulty.

You think so? I feel like the Wii one has better control since there are less objects to manipulate, on the 360/PS3 one it seems as though I can never really use the force as I want

The cutscenes still should have been pre-rendered, having them use the in game engine just makes them look unpolished (the game moves very fast the cutscenes do not so you notice the disparity more)

Which platforms are we talking about?

PS3 and 360

AgentOtaku: Do you think the audio difference is good enough to justify a PS3 purchase over the 360? Actually, a huge a reason of me leaning towards the 360 version is the 360 controller which I strongly prefer over the DS3.

If you have a 7.1 sound system, I'd say its worth it.

Been playing the PS3 version since Friday and here's my thoughts. I think the game is a ton of fun and it looks good and sounds amazing. Seriously, if you have a PS3 and a nice surround sound system you are in for a real audio treat. Even if you just rent the game you need to experience that aspect of it for at least a while.

The graphics are good and as someone has already mentioned the art direction is amazing. The dev team did a good job bringing the Star Wars universe to life in a way that feels very authentic and meshes well with existing canon.

The gameplay is about what you would expect with fancy saber combos, lightning, dashing, super jumps, force grip, repulse and force throw. Mixing all of these moves together is possible and encouraged and they all look, feel and sound pretty great.

Unfortunately, all is not roses. Either the dev team needed additional time and money or some additional talent because there are some annoying flaws. In my play time I counted several instances where I would be fighting an AT-ST and by breaking line of sight with it it would seem to "forget" I existed. It would then proceed to stand in one spot, not reacting at all while I hurled force missle after force missle at it until it blew up. Stuff like that should not happen to a title with these kinds of production values.

I also had at least 2 instances where a large crowd of mixed stormtroopers were heading my way and I was panning the camera to get a good look at them and as I would pan to one side and then back to the other some of the crowd would just be gone. Like maybe the game decided there were too many objects on the screen and decided to cull some of them. (Similar to Grand Theft Auto 3 on the PS2 where cars would often disappear as soon as they got off camera). And speaking of camera, oftentimes the game camera is no help at all. I was constantly fiddling with it and still getting pelted by things I couldnt see from off screen or fighting to get it to center on a certain target.

Still, and even with all of that, I really like playing this game. The action, Force abilities and kickass sound design kept drawing me back in and none of the annoyances added up to be a deal breaker. It is a FUN game and all the more so if you are a Star Wars fan and have ever envisioned yourself, lightsaber in hand (dont lie, you know who you are) as the last Jedi in the galaxy with all the power of the force for you to command.

This game screamed "buy it out of a bin for 20 bucks" from the beginning, which was only solidified by the first level demo that Gametrailers put up.

"HD Graphics and physics!!!" claims another set of victims.

From what I've gathered from reviews.

Pros:
Better story than the last 3 movies, good feel to powers and nice force effects.

Cons:
Ugly environments, repetitive combat, useless force powers near the end, no lasting appeal.

Sounds like a rental, and I hate renting games.

Ah it appears a few of us just can't not sit on the fence about this Wii version. But I think ultimately I won't get it until the price drops. The 6-8 hour length just barely pushes me over the edge, I can't really justify $50 on that. I think I will enjoy the game whenever I get it though.

I pretty much expected this game to be a glorified tech demo for DMM and Euphoria, with a decent Star Wars story tacked on, so these reviews and comments aren't discouraging me in the least. However, I can't decide which platform to get it on; 360 or PS3. Has anyone played both and can offer opinion on which is their preferred version?

If it was actually going to be a GOOD Brawling experience, I wouldn't have any trouble with the length or its asking price. I'm the same kinda guy who would spend good money on a brawler like God Hand or Viewtiful Joe (which honestly, both could be completed in the course of about 10 hours or less), and enjoyed the ride and continued to play them over and over again.

But that's not what any version of FU seems to be. Most reports seem to give off the notion that there's really no challenge to speak of, as well as the game being short. Since if you die, you just respawn close to where you bit it, and everyone you already killed stays that way. Not to mention that you basically become a steamroller relatively early on and the AI is stupid.

So...nope. Can't do it. I'll rent this sucker when I get the chance, and that should be good enough for me. I'll be willing to give "Clone Wars" a try, though...

im having a great time with the game, playing through it the 3rd time now,if you are a star wars fan you should buy it for the story alone (and im not even the greatest star wars fan)

Absolutely

I mean, do you have a 360 and a PS3? ...if so, try both versions for yourself

But yes, it IS that big of a difference

I think they dropped the ball on the DS version. They should've went the Ninja gaiden way for slashes and walking. Put the action on the touch screen. Hold L for force powers. Touch screen controls force powers for eg. force grip the touched enemy then force throw in the direction of the screen swipe, and so forth. The dpad changes force powers. Man, the touch screen offered so much potential for this.

Alas Ill be pickin up the Wii version this Friday.:D
