Welp, just bought the game from K-mart. But I have to wait until tomorrow to get my Wii back from my friend. :(

Hmm that trick in the video was interesting. While it would certainly make the level a breeze, wouldn't the cosmic Mario's in the
2nd green star
continue to chase after you ?

Only a few more green stars to go! Naturally, their among the hardest ones to get.

Haunty Halls - 2nd green star
Rolling Rainbow Road - 2nd green star
Melty Monster - 2nd green star
Stone Cyclone - 1st green star
Flip-Out -2nd green star

Also have 2 bronze stars.

One for Rolling Rainbow road
purple coins mission (got up to 94)

Forgot what the other one was from.

Yeah, probably. But
the second green star
is deceptively simple. If you can beat the comet version of the level, you can beat it just as easy.

Get to the end, drop off the ledge on the right hand side to snag the star. You can smash the crystal to get rid of the clones to take the pressure off if you need to.

purple coins mission (got up to 94)

Man, I hated that star. I made it to the end *once* with *exactly* enough. I will never play that level again so long as I live.

It gets creepier!

GN updated the post.
UPDATE - Now things get even weirder! This new image comes from reader Girrrtacos, who did some mighty-fine detective work to take us one step further. I'll let him explain the situation in his own works.

This is what I've found by hacking. It is in the sky model, and it's called "BeyondHellValleySky". The texture for those creepy things (seen in the bottom left) is called "HellValleySkyTree". Maybe they're weird lookin' trees?

This shows the texture and just the background more clearly: http://i49.tinypic.com/1255mye.png

I think it's pretty interesting. Too bad Nintendo will never comment on it.

Luigi's Purple Coin Chaos is going to be the death of me.
It only took me a few tries. Probably no harder than the original Luigi's Purple Coins, in my opinion.

Anyway, I just hit 120 stars and now I'm off to defeat Bowser for the second time. Thinking that, after that, I'll take a break from this game for a bit. Don't want to get through all the goodness right now, want to savor it for weeks to come.

As an added note, some of the Purple Coin stars are quite difficult, some are just perfect, and some are just pathetically easy. The Sunshine Galaxy's Purple Coin star was laughable.

I much preferred the Purple Coin challenges in Galaxy 2 over Galaxy 1. While none were as difficult/fun as Luigi's Purple Coins or Dreadnought's Purple Coins, they were a lot more challenging and creative as a whole. Apart from the those two levels in Galaxy 1, all of the others basically just threw purple coins around the levels and since they weren't even hid well, you just played through the levels as normal, and picked them up on the way.

On an unrelated note, regarding a few of the levels in the last world:

I *really* wish they had reused the Super Mario Sunshine bonus stage music instead of reusing the absolutely HORRID Toy Time Galaxy music from Galaxy 1. Instead of using the best rendition of the Mario theme, they used the worst. It really spoiled the level for me, as even though I recognised it right away, as soon as that music kicked it, all nostalgia flew out of the window. At least the (overly-excessive) high-pitched and quirky tune fit Toy Time Galaxy's theme, but there was no reason to use it again in Galaxy 2.

It's also a shame they didn't really utilize Rainbow Road very well. If they had used music from one of the Mario Kart games, and set the level at night rather than day, that would have been awesome.

If they had made those changes, and put Throwback Galaxy in World S instead of World 5, then World S would have been nostalgia heaven. It was still a great world, but it seems that Galaxy 1 is the only game that was truly represented well in it.

I'm a bit late to the party, thanks to waiting for the PAL version, but this game is awesome. I'm 50-ish stars in and just hit World 6 already, and so far SMG2 definitely lives up to its predecessor, in all aspects but music. I prefer the old soundtrack. Some of the levels in this game are fiendishly clever, but the game rarely feels unfair. The lows of SMG2 seems higher than the lows of SMG, at least.

When I 100%'d SMG, which is something I rarely do, I wanted more. That never happens. Yet, Nintendo delivered. This is more Super Mario Galaxy, and it's exactly what I wanted.

Awesome game. I can't believe Nintendo pulled it off twice in a row. I hope I'll have the time to 100% this one, too.

42 stars now, just completed Super Massive Galaxy. It's been a fantastic ride so far, and the only complaint I have is the Fuzzard flight levels. They aren't hard to complete, but the controls feel a bit wonkey there. But that's seriously my only complaint, the game is awesome.

Edit: also, I'm surprised by the Prankster Comets this time around. The challenges are more fun.

So my PAL copy just arrived today, and I quickly burned through the first few stars before lunch. so far, it's just as good as its predecesor. I noticed that the open worlds feel more focused than they did in SMG1, which I prefer.

I agree that the original had a better soundtrack. I thought that Sky Station Galaxy was the only piece of music that came close to rivalling the quality of Galaxy 1's best tracks, such as Good Egg Galaxy, Space Junk Galaxy, Buoy Base Galaxy, and Gusty Garden Galaxy.

A few tracks were reused from Galaxy 1, but with the exception of Buoy Base Galaxy, most of them were poor choices, such as Toy Time Galaxy (which I believe is the worst rendition of the Mario theme Nintendo have ever put out), and Honey Hive Galaxy (it's remixed a little, but still sounds extremely similar).

I was also really hoping the soundtrack would be entirely orchestrated this time, but for some reason, there's once again a lot of unmemorable midi stuff as well. I'm not saying that orchestrated stuff is inherently better, but you can tell that some music tracks are half-assed. Why is stuff like this and this still present? They sound like they came from a Mario Party game or something.

Galaxy 2 still has a great soundtrack, and still beats the soundtracks of most games out there; I'm just focusing on the bad points here.

I have 16 stars, I don't think this is a simple "game of the year", it's going to be a classic, a game you can play in, say, 15 years... and it will still be one of the best.

Just like Mario 64.

And I love easter eggs that become internet phenomenons like Stop 'n Swop, so I'm loving that Beyond Hell thing.

242 at last!
I definitely had to work my ass off to get that last star.
Great job, Nintendo. I loved this game from start to finish.

OK, so I've just been playing this for like 4 hours. It's outstanding. But I just want to say a few things:

-The person responsible for the Tall Trunk Purple Coins level needs to rot in jail, as well as the person responsible for the Flip Switch Purple Coins level.

-The Bowser fights are incredible.

-The Fluzzard Galaxy is a bit meh :/

-I love the amount of 2D levels. The ones with messed up gravity (like Flipsville or Gravity Gaunlet) even more so.

-The levels which have the Wiimote send out a beat are really cool.

-Supermassive Galaxy :D

OK I'm done. I'm on 60 stars, I've just unlocked World 5, and I'm finding that I have to almost physically tear myself away from the game. Like I said: outstanding.

Strange, I thought Flip Switch Purple Coin was really easy.
And a tip for Tall Trunk that helped me: I always pushed forward on the Analog stick as well while sliding. But the thing is, you don't need to do that. Just gently steer left and right. It's actually not that hard afte you get the hang of it.

I have to say it again: the comet challenges are SOOOO much better and some really hit the sweet spot in difficulty for me. I am up to World 6 with almost 90 stars. Always try to complete all the comets bwhen they appear before moving on to new levels.
A question: Can i get 119 stars before finishing the game?

Just started the game (4 stars) and what I can say as first impression is that I didn't feel the magic of the first one. It's a fantastic game but it feels and plays like a sequel.

The experience starting Galaxy 2 after having played Galaxy 1 is very different from the experience starting Galaxy 1 after having played Sunshine.

I died a fair bit on Flip Switch Purple Coin. Not nearly as much as on Tall Trunk PC though, I died 18 times on that o_O

Also I did wonder about pushing forward whilst sliding, but I didn't notice any difference when I stopped doing it, so I carried on pushing forward. Ah well, I've beat it now :lol

the real 'magic' of smg2 is that it doesn't feel like a chore to play unlike its predecessor.

Before beating Bowser? No. Most is 106.

Understandable, I felt the exact same way. World 3 is where it really picked up for me.

26 stars in and I'm loving it. I'm slowly working my way through the game and now that the World Cup started and adding my addiction to BC2 it'll be even slower. That's not a bad thing though because I enjoy the game for a longer period of time. :D

To be fair, those cloud platforms won't disappear if you have the cloud suit.

Which you should have kept from the very beginning of the level. You didn't get hit, did you?

So, finally spured to buy a Wii and got a copy of SMG2 with it.
Quite enjoyed the opening, took a small bit of getting used to on my part. Gotten all the 4 stars of the first galaxy, now onto bigger and better things!

I thought that the last 2 stars in
Grandmaster Galaxy
were the best in the game.

I don't know when it happened, but Nintendo went from making their games difficult,
thatis, requiring skill, precision, and coordination to complete to offensively easy or unfairly hard.

Hard as in, hampered by a shitty camera system, illogical time limit or plot device, etc.

Not to mention 1UPs are about as abundant as porn on a 12 year old's computer.
I remember when you got 1UPs in the original games. Either you knew something no one else did or you carefully collected your coins.
It was a godsend to get another life.

Please make your games difficult again Nintendo. Please.

This is what it feels like to me.

Btw, I love the Starshine Beach Galaxy, I always adored the Piantas :)

I keep trying to play this again, but I've come to the realisation that I've milked all the content possible out of this.

I mean, I still haven't done the Perfect Run, but you know.

In order to unlock the
grandmaster galaxy
, you can't have any bronze stars from any previous galaxy levels and have to have all of the green stars too , is that correct ?

I didn't have any problems with the motion control. The rolling ball one in particular impressed me with how accurate the tilt motion control is when it was first introduced in SMG 1.

Finally beat the Rolling Rainbow Road 2nd Green star, Flip Out 2nd green star, Stone Cyclone 1st green star, and Haunty Halls 2nd green star.

Just need to do the Melty Monster 3rd green star. While trying to get the star is tricky, I've finally grown to really like the rock mushroom power-up.

So I got spoiled by my brother last night as I watched him make his way through
"The Perfect Run". He had 99 lives. He seriously lost all 99 lives on this one run and it was always on the segment with the Hammer & Boomerang Bros.

Fucking incredible game. :lol
