TERA |OT| F2P starting in February! Were you expecting a parade?

I decided to give this another try. I think maybe I was unfair in my original dismissal. 8 hours is certainly not enough to judge this type of game.

Since I'm new to MMOs, some questions. What's the best way to play with other gaffers? I'm on the trial account and can't join the guild until this goes F2P. I also can't switch servers because I'm on the trial. I have a lvl 12 archer on Celestial Hills, and I just created a lancer on Tempest Reach.

Also, how does group play actually work? For example, on these fetch quests and stuff, is that done as a group? Or are those individual, and you just take care of the large dungeons as a group? And when can I expect to see those? With the archer I made it to the forest.

Pretty much any quest can be done solo or in a group. Even dungeon quests can be done solo.

If a quest is a "solo quest" (indicated by not having a little blue person-shaped icon with the number 5 beside it), you can pretty easily solo it with any class as long as the target mobs are not much more than maybe 2 levels higher than you (considering the quest distribution in the game, it is nearly impossible to encounter quests too high for your level).

If you group up with anyone else on the same quest, you will share progress on it. If you need to kill 10 of some monster, you killing one of those monsters will count for both of you as long as you're not too far apart.

If it is a "kill monster for X quest item drops (that don't actually take up inventory space)" then the drop rate is the same for everyone in the group, so if you kill 4 mobs and got 2 of the quest items, everyone in the party on that quest will get 2 of the quest items. There may be exceptions to this, but I've never encountered any.

Quests to gather nodes (the flowers, for example) are slightly in that some things you gather yield a random amount of stuff. For example, the Cloud Mushroom quest near Lumbertown. Those can yield 1-3 mushrooms per gather, so if you gather those as a group, then someone may finish before everyone else.

Escort quests also can be done as a group. When someone in the party starts the quest, it will start for everyone else nearby in the party who is on that quest, too.

Group quests (BAM quests and dungeon quests) work the same way as normal quests outlined above, but they are normally designed with more powerful enemies for a group to tackle. At the early levels, BAMs can be soloed easily by many classes if you don't suck. The higher level you get, though, the nastier the BAMs get, and even the ones you can still solo generally have so much HP that soloing them is a PITA. Hunting BAMs as a group is best, but you don't always need a full group for BAMs. Last night on my 47 lancer I was duoing level 46 BAMs with an archer and making decent time at it. No healer. No deaths. Just have to play smart when you don't have that safety net (healer). Likewise if you're in a group with no real tank.

First dungeon and BAMs are around level 20. If you follow the quest hubs in order, the quests will lead you right to the dungeon area and give you a stack of quests to complete in the area.

Thanks for all the info, it really helps out.

All right--so the basic thing is that I'll need to at least trudge up to level 20 before I get to the stuff I want.

So do all gaffers play on Tempest Reach? Should I just level that one character up so I can eventually play with you all? I have no idea if they'll charge for server changes when this goes F2P, and if they do it'll probably be too expensive for my liking, judging by the price of the costumes.

They've said server transfers will remain free (for now), I believe.

They've always been free ever since they were first available.. they do have a 7 day cooldown time and a level restriction, though. (must be lv 11 to transfer)

Great news, then.

OK, I'm going to start over with the lancer to see which style of play I prefer, then. And then I'll decide.

If anyone is starting out and wants to add me to their friends list to do the quests together, I'm under the name Prissou.

How long does this trial mode last? I'm level 21 now, I think I should slow down in time for when it's totally free. Or I could just level up another class.

I finally died recently fighting a basilisk for the eggs. Needed 3 more kills. I like how sturdy Mystic's defender pet is.

Site says it goes F2P at an unspecified time in February.

You also have a level 28 cap on the trial.

My account says it's active until the 24th, not the 16th. Am I special or did they give everyone an extra week?

I believe they added a week to my account a while back that I never made use of...it'd be cool if those 7 days simply carried over somehow since I didn't log in. That's not how it worked when Blizzard reactivated my WoW account though.

Any warriors here? When does it 'click'?

But I'm only 10ish, but wanna know about when I start to get awesome :)

warriors are really rough early on. Only class I've played that I came close to dying on Island of Dawn with simply because they can pretty much kill themselves with Combative Strike.

If I had to pick an exact moment - when you get Blade Draw and the glyph that can reset its cooldown. Do not skip that.

All right--so the basic thing is that I'll need to at least trudge up to level 20 before I get to the stuff I want.

One other thing I forgot to mention. In a group, the experience you get for killing things is slightly reduced. For example, I've soloed several characters through starter island and usually end up around level 13 by the time I hit Velika. I trioed the place with some friends this weekend, and we just barely hit 11 (required to leave) after going through the quests.

However, in a group you will clear quests much faster (and you will hit them at their more "appropriate" challenge level) so it balances out. There really is no good reason to not team up for questing (but at the same time, until level 55 there is also really no good reason to sit around looking for people to quest with since soloing anything that isn't a BAM/dungeon quest is pretty easy).

Once you get to level 54~ solo questing becomes pretty hellish for any class. Normal monsters ramp up HP into the 100k+ range (I manually parsed some combat logs to count). If that sounds like a lot, it is. When I was leveling my sorc, I literally went from being able to 1-2 shot quest mobs with a crit to having to do several entire skill rotations and use up all my mana against every single monster, and my gear was not bad. The thing is, the original level cap was in the 50s (54 I think?) so those additional zones were designed for a playerbase that had established friends/guilds to level with and already had enchanted top tier gear, not for people rocking quest gear or low iLvl (unenchanted) instance gear.

Friends don't let friends solo in Val Elenium.

I'm running into the same problem that I had at launch: I can't settle on a class! Before long, I'll have each one at level 11 or above. At launch, I eventually settled on Berserker, but I stopped at level 23 when the difficulty jumped (I think it was the introduction of BAMs, I don't remember). I've heard that zerkers were eventually improved -- does anyone know how, exactly?

yeah, it's odd for an evasive class, many of there early moves have way too long animations/hits.

I have a problem with my lancer. How come I can't do a fast Spring Attack after doing a 3-combo hit? I did it once, somehow, but I've been trying for 20 minutes and I just can't replicate it. I've tried all sorts of timings. Is this maybe somehow lag-related?

Are you referring to the prompt that asks you to hit Spacebar?

No. It's the attack where you charge for a long time (like two seconds) before it's unleashed. It's a forward thrust, and the second skill you can get. I can chain it after two strikes from Shield Barrage without problem. But if I try to chain it after three hits from Combo Attack, like the description says I can, that's where I have trouble doing it. I was only able to do it once.

Edit: Ahhhh... I got it. Combo Attack, when I do it, does damage three times. I thought I had to do Spring Attack on the third damage point. But what I actually have to do is perform the Combo Attack three times (so it does damage 9 times), and then I can lead it into Spring Attack.

Yeah. Thing is though, that third poke from Combo Attack is fine for soloing small fry, but as you probably noticed it has a huge windup and lengthy unbreakable animation. You should pretty much never be using it on BAMs.

Midlevel great skill rotation for Lancers is something like 2 clicks of Combo (the two fast ones, for some MP regeneration), then manually start an infinite loop of Shield Barrage -> Spring Attack -> Debilitate -> chain back to Shield Barrage. Click click 1 spacebar to victory. With an up-to-date weapon this combo will pretty much kill any non-BAM you will encounter until 55+ and anything it doesn't kill, you will want Debilitate in the combo to debuff. It's a great all-purpose Lancer skill combo. Go to your skill chaining interface and set up the skills to chain in that order so you can just use your chain key to keep going. Just be VERY careful as lancer about hitting spacebar if it is bound as your Jump key, because jumping in a BAM's face is never a good idea (instant knockdown and subsequent pounding).

For soloing non-BAMs where you can afford to do slower attacks and shrug off the damage, you will want to chain skills like Shield Barrage -> Spring Attack -> Wallop (instead of Debilitate because Wallop does a ton more damage) but you should activate Wallop manually and keep Debilitate in your normal rotation so you don't have to swap back and forth every time you fight a boss.

In either case, knowing when to use your ezmode combo and when to use skills in different order, or knowing when to give up on your combo to block an attack, throw out a stun, or refresh Debilitate debuff are things you will just have to learn for yourself.

Sweet. Thanks for the tips. I'll come back to this post when I've earned all of these skills.

I think I'm actually enjoying the lancer more than the archer. It's funner to pound enemies than to try to run away from them.

I'm about to give up. I'm having the same problem I had for the first couple months at launch. Game runs smooth. REALLY smooth. never really dips below 45 fps. Then I step inside an instance... with 4 other people, everything is fine, except boss fights.... boss fights are the only part of the game that tank the frame rate no matter what is going on. We can be fighting 3 packs of trash. 45 fps... Start a boss fight? 16-20fps. I've tried next to everything.

1)playing windowed mode
2)tweaking just about every settting up and down, nothing changes
3)turning off the UI (because this was a big issue before) same frame rate.
4)upgrading video card drivers (I'm on top of that all the time anyway)
5)cleaning my computer out. defrag, making sure useless programs aren't running at the same time, cleaning dust. etc etc

I just don't understand it. Every other game I play is perfect. I've been playing Witcher 2, Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Assassin's Creed 3. All maxed out with nearly with no performance issues whatsoever. I'm lost. I have new drivers compared to when I last played the game (made sure I did a clean install as well)

I've searched for days and days online trying to find people with similar issues and I can't find anything thats not UI related. It can't be the UI... I've tested it multiple times on and off and theres little to no difference.

I'm really upset. I want to like this game. I really do. I leveled to 60 with no problems. It pretty much wasn't until the level 60 instances did I notice the issue. I really don't know what else to do. It can't be an AMD issue? (5850) If it was I'm sure I would have found at least one thing online that was similar to my problem.

I should have been more clear.

My specs
Intel Core i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz
4.00 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5850

Surely it can't be my CPU can it? If it was I would most definitely find people with similar issues online. Its a pretty common processor. Like I said. I've played countless other games and MMO's without issues.

OC it. Tera only uses 2 cores and a half.

But yes, game is not optimized because of the damn UI BS.

Try Preset 1 too instead of 0. 0 makes the GPU go unused.

*raises hand*

Mine is old so it's more than just that, but yeah, there is a reason I never got into hardmodes at launch, and why I haven't bothered trying now that I'm back. Even at min settings my PC just cannot do instances without dipping down to like 0.25 FPS at times. I can get away with doing that as a sorc in normal modes, but no way could I tank like that, or do hardmodes as any class. Building a new one this month (last 2 parts are in the mail) so hoping that helps.

Okay, tried my berserker out since I was able to skip the prologue. I like how the class feels! And I'm surprised how much better lancers and berserkers feel over archers, it feels a lot more like an action game this way.

All right... the game is clicking with me. I realize it's not about versatility in quests, it's basically just about killing things and getting loot. Question, then... I'm not able to really do much of anything with this trial. No guilds to play with gaffers, can't add friends, and the actual F2P is probably at least a month away. If I were to buy it, is the founder status worth it? These are the perks:

http://support.enmasse.com/tera/tera-rising-play-for-free#What_is_Valkyon's_response?

Or am I better off just waiting a bit? The 8 character slots seem tempting. I feel like there's a lot of versatility between the classes. But I don't know if normal players switch over a lot between them or just stick to one or two.

Sorry to tell you this, but next time buy Nvidia and Intel. There is a known problem with AMD video cards that breaks performance in this game. AMD is nearly bankrupt and probably will never have the resources to fix their drivers for a niche title like Tera. It also sucks on AMD's woefully underpowered CPUs as the game is essentially almost not multi threaded and Intel annihilates AMD in single threaded performance.

I have Core i7 950 overclocked to 4ghz and this game still chokes my CPU in areas. That's what happens when Tera is a game which only spawns two threads for all game processes.

Slayer is fun, I just got overhead smash. Killing things goes by even quicker now, I went and soloed a Kuma in Celestial Hill at level 22. Took me a while to drop him (7-10mins), but I only got hit once the entire time. For some reason from level 1-22 I never knew about back button bringing up the controller config menu. Increasing the stick sensitivity made most of my gripes disappear. I usually hate MMOs that are big on kill X mob Y times. But the combat in Tera makes doing that soooo much fun.

oh believe me... If I could turn back time I would have gone with Nvidia. It stings me to this day. No doubt my next card will be one. I'm not making that mistake again.

but like I said I should have been more clear with my specs. I posted them afterwards. I don't have an AMD cpu.

What AMD video card bug is that...? I've never had an issue on my 5850. Just newer stuff or something?

Probably gonna main Berserker, having a lot of fun smashing monsters. Sorcerer was fun but I'm really not that into magic types still.

This sucks if you're one to manage inventory or maybe alt-tab out of the game for a bit to do something else. But I guess it makes sense in the context of the character.

This gets easier and easier to manage as you go up in level. Once you start using charms, full crystal sets, and have some of your resource management skills it becomes pretty trivial.

Good to know. It's not a big issue anyway, as I'm sure if I were doing something focused I wouldn't leave my character sitting there depleting anyway.

In an unrelated subject, I think that if these things touch there's going to be some sort of explosion...

It's too bad the game doesn't have day/night cycles. Would really profit from it.

By the way, does anyone have input on my previous post? Wondering whether buying the game to get Founder status is worth it in any way, or if I should just be patient and hold off playing for a few weeks.

Edit: Oh, and can you later dye your hair? I went black instead of blonde, kind of regretting it now.

You'll hit a point where it just kind of stops being a thing. If I'm standing around doing nothing on my Berserker I can sit at 95% mana the whole time.

If you're going to be playing off and on, Founder status seems decent. Plus you will be able to play all the way up until the actual F2P transition on the 6th without restriction. The Founders bonuses will almost surely cost more than $20 for a new player, plus you'll get a neato mount. Huzzah.

It costs like five or ten bucks to change your appearance in their store. I don't think there's any other way to change it.

I just checked. Wow, ten bucks.

I think I may start my character over then, since two hours of re-leveling is better than ten bucks.

Also... yeah, I think the Founder perks may end up being way cheaper than if you wanted to buy everything separately. I'll try to go up to lvl 28 or so to see if I take the plunge. Thanks, guys.

Bear in mind if you buy Founder status you'll get either five or ten bucks worth of credit in their store when F2P goes live. I think you only get ten if you get the CE, but you could save at least five bucks if you do get Founder status just by waiting. Still, two hours is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Alright I definitely want Founder status.
But I don't want to have to go through the hassle of canceling the monthly fee.

Could I just buy the digital download off Amazon then? It's the same price and includes 30 days.
