They just jailbroke the Analogue Duo

Finally, no more bullshit with the Everdrive cards.

Also, this allows you to run the original Turbografx CD bios.

This may fix the problem the console had with playing certain cd games.

That is pretty awesome. I like PC Engine CD/Turbografx CD quite a bit , but was waiting for the jailbreak before buying.

I do have quite a few Japanese games for PC Engine CD, but not really anything for the Turbo since US prices are $$$$.

The Turbografx 16/PC Engine was better hardware than the NES, but it totally flopped in America. It blows the NES out of the water.
It is kind of like the cult classic, secret console.

I'd really love to get one of these and the everdrive card that allows for CD rom.

Gonna have to stick w/ pocket emulation for now but maybe someday. PC Engine/Turbo Grafix are absolutely stacked with amazing titles.

The great thing about it is that the library is not that big.

Collecting physical copies, on the other hand, is really expensive.

The internet has backed up most of the games.

I got the Turbo Everdrive Pro and EDFX for my PCEngine recently. It's a dream come true since my PCE library is not that extensive. I bought my console and games long ago while in Tokyo for cheap. That is not possible anymore, and I celebrate any new means for people to enjoy this great console. The Analouge is a great way if you do not already have a a solid RGB setup. Just plug it in and have a lagfree experience of perhaps the greatest Shoot 'em Up library in console history.

I also have a Turbo Duo but the Hucard slot broke on it. I need to find a technician to fix it.

Either that or sell it on eBay for parts.

You can pick a lot of japanese games for cheap. Many of these are totally playable.
Yeah, that's what I have been doing myself last few years. NA or European titles are way too expensive.

Also, the Japanese library is actually quite large so there is a plethora of quality titles to pick up. Situation reminds me of Saturn's library which is mostly Japan oriented.

I wish there was some way to translate the audio on the games. You can use Google translate or Retroarch to translate the text.

There has gotta be some way to do it with a smartphone.

I believe with this jailbreak it plays everything, TG16, SuperGrfx and CD rom games as well. No need for the everdrive now. Check out Madlittlepixel's videos, he tries Castlevania.

Well. Google Translate kinda works. The problem is that it does not work on the fly. It pauses after translating a sentence.

It needs to be streaming the translation.

Yes. You can run everything off the SD card. Even CD and Supergrafx games.

I am using this cheap 1TB SD card, but it's read access is kind of slow. It has an annoying delay.
I will probably switch to a 256GB Sandisk card.

Most good stuff is still expensive, even common games like Gunhed.

But I guess this has become the case for most retro games. A shame, really. Retro used to be the poor mans alternative, now it's the other way around.

I mean for retro emulation it's not expensive if you don't care about having physical copies.

Do you have any original games? A MiSTer would be cheaper than the two together and support other consoles.

Yeah. The real driving thing behind the Analogue Duo is that you can play physical games. It is there to replace old hardware.

I really hope there are siblings/buddies out there playing through retro games, one controlling the game, the other on translating duties!

Why are you comparing it to the NES? Isn't it more comparable to the Mega drive/Genesis and SNES? Love the PC Engine by the way if only for it's near perfect R-Type

I think it's even cheaper to just get a PCEngine and Everdrive, but only if you already have a CRT or upscaler.
Not really, I believe you need the Everdrive Pro for CD add-on emulation. That $199, a PC Engine runs ~$75 shipped from Japan, and you'll need to mod it or get an A/V expansion for the best picture $50+ for expansion, more to pay someone to mod. Then $25-50 for quality video cables. That puts you at least $350

A DE10 Nano retails at $225. And there are bundles of case, 128MB SDRAM, analog IO board, and USB hub for $160. That's a fully loaded MiSTer for $35 more and it has HDMI output without needing an extra scaler and can do a whole mess load of other systems. Analogue's stuff makes sense if you want to play your original game media. But just the cost of 2-3 Everdrives gets you a decked-out MiSTer, and you have access to a bunch of arcade boards that would cost more than the MiSTer setup on their own.

The PC Engine was an 8-bit system, it was actually taking a sizable chuck of the Japanese market until the Mega Drive came out. The PC Engine looks amazing, but also look at what the Master System could pull off. Most people look at the NES/Famicom but that was designed around components that were already considered "cheap" in 1983.

Well kind of, but not really. It had an 8 bit CPU and a 16 bit GPU that's why the games looked the way they did. By the time it was released it had to compete with Megadrive/Genesis just 1 year later, so the PC Engine was very costly and had major competition from Sega. In NA they both released the same month, TurboGrafx 16 didn't stand a chance.

The EDFX is 50$ and requires no modding. The best cables money can buy are 30$, not 50$ and decent cables can be found for 10$. But sure, 350$ for everything and that'll probably include controller and AC adapter aswell.

You even state that the MiSTer setup would be more expensive.

But I honestly haven't checked out the MiSTer scene in a while, but you are telling me I can get a complete setup for less than 400$? If that's the case, I might bite. Last time I checked, having original controller ports was pretty expensive though.

As for PCEngine vs 8/16-bit; no game on Mega Drive or SNES looks as good as Sapphire on PCEngine. I'm not saying PCEngine has better performance than MD/SNES but all three have their pros and cons. Whereas comparing PCEngine to Master System or NES is very one-sided.

It also outsold the Mega Drive in Japan.

My total price was based on the lower $25 value of the cable range. Though I was off, I didn't see that the HD Retrovision cables are up to $65 now.

And yes a decked-out MiSTer is slightly more expensive. But like I said you get Atari 2600 -> N64/PSX/Saturn, hundreds of arcade games including CPS 1/1.5/2 and the NeoGeo, and a bunch of computers. With the scene packs it's a great way to easily experiment with Japanese PCs.

It is possible to just use the DE10 Nano, an SDRAM add-on, and a cheap $5 $8 micro USB OTG hub (stupid inflation) https://www.amazon.com/TUSITA-Adaptor-Charging-Adapter-Raspberry/dp/B00LTHBCNM/ That setup will be under $300 and run every core. It's not recommended to go with the special low latency controller adapters unless you are trying to use a lightgun on a CRT, instead USB adapters will give you a great experience, those $15-20 each quickly adds up. But the MiSTer can use any controller you already have, so you need to want to only use original controllers.

Here's a list of the systems it officially does, other devs are also supporting it but are in the main repo. https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Wiki_MiSTer/wiki/Cores
