Tom Warren seems to throw cold water on rumours of Switch 2 being as capable as PS4 Pro

I see loads of people have been speculating switch 2 will use dlss since the first rumours of the device, and it will very likely feature the hardware to support it.
But I wonder, would Nintendo be able to use dlss?
Dlss is a Nvidia specific machine learning software right, so I'd imagine Nvidia would want some sort of royalty payments to use it. Also the work to integrate it into the switch developer tools.
I've been wondering this for a bit, and I'm genuinely curious to what people who know more than myself think. Or am I talking bollocks?

You.could be on to something. It's going to be interesting to see how it's unveiled and what's mentioned.

Maybe, nintendo did a deal to have dlss included in their sdk. Platform etc.

Hopefully we find out by the 8th of jan.

Yeah hopefully we don't have to wait long for the unveiling.
I love fecking love new hardware launches

The Switch 2 will be powered by Mario´s jizz

Borefest? Cmon man lol. 😄

Did Nintendo really build a fanbase of grown men who are more excited to play this...

I only managed to play 30 minutes of Rift Apart before getting wildly bored. I lost count of the hours I put on Animal Crossing New Horizons, so yeah AC is more exciting to me.

A handheld that was released in early 2017.

It's not impossible that the Switch 2 will be comparable to the PS4 Pro in 2025, which was a console released nine years ago in 2016.

At 400 dollars.

No. We all know Nintendo are profit first. They are not taking a loss at launch.

The NVIDIA leak references DLSS for the Switch 2. Nintendo also patented their own AI upscaling technique 2-3yrs ago.

No body Can honestly think that a switch would be that powerful

But why... I'm trying to understand why some folks don't think that's possible at all.

It's a 2025 dedicated hybrid gaming console, I think it being better than a 2016 console should be an easy given.

It's interesting to see how delusional Nintendo fans are. We have $1000 bleeding edge handhelds that can barely run new games at 30fps without cutting your eyes and yet somehow Nintendo is going to put out a 4k $300 monster while not putting out loss leading hardware

Making powerful small chips that don't use a lot of power are harder to make, thus more expensive. For example an Iphone 15 pro that can pull similar graphics to a regular ps4 cost Apple about $550 to make.

I don't buy it.

I'm convinced the Switch 2 will be at least PS4 Pro power levels and come in under £400. Bookmark this.

If I'm wrong........then I'm wrong. Not the end of the world, but I know I'm correct.

Fuck that would be awesome, I'm rooting for you to be right.

There were some articles here and there.

The original report on that event from VGC specifically said:

"However, it should be noted this does not mean the Switch successor will sport raw power anywhere near that of PS5 or Xbox Series X, which aren't portable devices."

Not a single person in this thread has said this.

Ps4 to ps4 pro hardware for 400 dollars is an abomination and embarrassment. No one wants to play 1080p at best 'it'll dip below that' at 30fps on a 4k screen man. This thing will be prehistoric tech wise on launch and will have an outdated LED screen on it too boot because they'll want to sell you an OLED version of it later lol. I know i'm being harsh but honestly it's the truth.
Listen this is a Nintendo thread, we're gonna have to keep it family friendly.

Nah. If it's PS4 to PS4 Pro in GPU power, that would be absolutely fantastic both in handheld and on a TV.
DLSS upscaling to 4K would be available, and I suspect you're looking at it with expectations of similar CPU performance as the PS4 generation when this will definitely be more powerful, CPU wise.

There are top quality LCD displays out there. See the PS Portal for example.

I want it to be as powerful as the Xbox 1 S at most, staying a generation behind has worked wonders for their design and creativity

Correct, and Nintendo couldn't make a game at the scale of the average current-gen AAA if they had unlimited hardware power.

If DF is right, it should perform a bit better than PS4 and with DLSS be pretty close to PS4 Pro in image quality, but in terms of raw power it clearly won't be as good.

Best comment in here, people need to keep in mind that we don't know the effectiveness of the DLSS in Switch 2 nor how demanding it will be on render times, maybe it'll be a bit mre demanding than how it is on your typical RTX cards, plus we know Switch 2 won't run most of its games at 1080p like how PS4 did, because games now are substantially more demanding & graphically much more advanced, so you'll see a lot of 720p & even much lower resolutions on it like 540p/480p, DLSS will help get those resolutions to make them look like a Base PS4 game in terms of clarity (assuming we won't see much of AI artifacts), we'll see if it can do that, let alone getting anywhere near a PS4 Pro.

Nintendo stopped chasing the specs race after N64. Arguably, GC was their last "state of the art" console.

However, since the Switch release, we have a Market with Steam Decks and ROG Allies. I don't think Switch 2 will compete with those. But I think it is realistic to imagine Nintendo having more resources and technology available to at least scratch those numbers just by default.

So, my bet is that it won't be PS4 Pro level hardware, but it'll be 70%-80% as powerful as the LCD Steam Deck, whatever that means.

900p screen would be the best for this console.
Agreed, especially if it has an 8" screen. Proper 16:9.
I was mostly talking about GPU stuff but yeah, CPU in S2 will probably be better than that Jaguar.

Matrix itself can no problem run on Polaris class hardware. This is unoptimized pc build using max settings and 1080p:

We have no idea what resolution and settings switch demo was using, it was also probably optimized and tailored for it (just like PS5 build was and Xbox devs did the same with Series build).

That is a far better CPU than what is in a PS4 Pro, more RAM and a better GPU...and it's still maxed out at 20fps, but I could see where if you somehow managed to potato it further than that you could get it to run on a Pro, sure :messenger_tears_of_joy: To be honest, it runs better than I'd thought given that config.

If it has DLSS with frame gen then I'm sure it can deliver PS4 Pro like performance. Without it, I doubt it. When you look at a game like Horizon Forbidden West running on the base PS4, it looks surprisingly good and I would be shocked to see a game look that good on Switch 2 while running well.

I might be misremembering but I'm fairly sure the rumors are that it will not support frame gen.

The Switch 2 will run Elden Ring better than the PS4 Pro.

Yeah, as in he's laughing at the rumors about it being 'as powerful' as a PS4 Pro. When it will probably be more.

That's how I read it, at least.

PS4 Pro is almost a decade old and was running on outdated CPU architecture even at release. Won't be surprising to see 2025 Nintendo hardware be stronger than that.

I think he is implying that it is much more powerful than ps4 pro.

Thats why its "funniest" rumour.

looking at these posts and still can't tell if it's trolling or sheer stupidity...

People are going to come up with wild expectations on what the Switch 2 can do, and pretend not to care when it doesn't.
Nintendo could probably release the v1 switch again. With a few exclusives, at least some Nintendo fans would say they didn't care because they were having too much fun.

Ah yes Tom Warren, hardware expert pur sang. I don't even get why he would post something like this. He knows he gets shit from it. Probably some kind of fetish at this point.

In docked mode the Switch 2's port of Elden Ring will run better than PS4 Pro port. No trolling.
It will literally be weaker hardware than the current handheld pcs on the market while running at lower power profiles. Whatever some of you are smoking, better mix some tobacco with it, it's too intense right now.
