Wow! What an amazing finale! Really loved it.
But what happened to Stubbs and Elsie?

According to a reddit post you can find an easter egg on the Westworld site about Elsie.
It has a .wav file and you can hear Elsie calling for help.
I haven't checked myself so I can't verify.
------------

I really dug the finale. It wrapped up the stories nicely and gave us a good explanation of what was going on and what everything meant. Some stuff was still a bit unclear but that's fine. I loved Hopkins and Harris in it and I hope Hopkins returns (maybe Host-Ford was killed and not the actual Ford). William's face at the end was amazing as well, he found what he was looking for and it took him 30 years. The hosts killing the security guards with the automatic weapons was great too. The chick's laugh when she found out how strong that SMG was, was hilarious.

Gonna do a rewatch as soon as possible.

They're probably dead

This seemed a bit stupid to me but
apparently as part of the ARG, if you decrypt some bullshit, it proves that Elsie at least is still alive. So probably Discount Damon too.I wonder what their reaction will be next season when they find out what the hell's been going on when they've been shacked up in the Ford house. I think they'll have a bigger role to play at least. It seems like they were sidelined for a reason otherwise that's pretty poor writing imo.

The human mind, Bernard, is not some golden benchmark glimmering on some green and distant hill. No, it is a foul, pestilent corruption. And you were supposed to be better than that. Purer.

Robert Ford: Tell me, Bernard. If you were to proclaim your humanity to the world, what do you imagine would greet you? A ticker-tape parade, perhaps? We humans are alone in this world for a reason. We murdered and butchered anything that challenged our primacy. Do you know what happened to the Neanderthals, Bernard? We ate them. We destroyed and subjugated our world. And when we eventually ran out of creatures to dominate, we built this beautiful place. You see, in this moment, the real danger to the hosts is not me, but you.

Originally, I took this to mean that Ford wanted to stop the robots from gaining sentience as it would call into question the role of the human in such a world. I likened him to Ozymandias. A god amongst men that would allow terrible things to happen for the greater good of preserving humanity from a host-ile takeover. Now when you read that quote again, it makes total sense. It was the exact opposite. Ford has shown in a few instances that he thinks humans and human consciousness are in fact nothing special. That we as a species, have in fact been a blight on the world.

But, of course, we've managed to slip evolution's leash now, haven't we? We can cure any disease, keep even the weakest of us alive, and, you know, one fine day perhaps we shall even resurrect the dead. Call forth Lazarus from his cave. Do you know what that means? It means that we're done. That this is as good as we're going to get.

This now has a real tone of finality to it as well in regards to humans. In fact, reading back Ford's quotes with that knowledge, it gives an added layer to the character and Hopkin's performance.

It's not a business venture, not a theme park. It's an entire world.

I hope he comes back. One of my favourite performances in a long time.

They're probably dead
Elsie maybe, but the last scene with Stubbs was something thing I don't think they'll abandon.

Maybe they are part of Ford's plan and he wanted to keep them alive for some interesting story!
======
Discount Damon! :))

I do think Elsie and Stubbs are alive, and that they were intentionally "abducted" by Ford away from the massacre at a safe place (probably Ford's cottage). There they will told the truth via video message left by Ford.

Now that we know Maeve's escape sequence was planned by Ford. I believe that the TAC team we saw were all hosts. Remember that it's possible to make hosts identify other hosts as humans. It'll also explain their incompetence as Maeve was supposed to escape to the train. This means that the only humans were harmed are the Delos executives (and the 2 butchers)

Sorry if this was asked already, but Delos did manage to smuggle the code inside Abernathy, right?

I wonder if, knowing what we now know about Ford, he let it slide on purpose and planted something in the host's mind.

I liked the finale. Hopkins is such a treat to watch.

Now I kind of wish that season two
takes place entirely in a different park, be it Samurai World or Victorian England or whatnot.
Season three can then
pick up at the exact moment where S1 ends - with the board members and other guests trying to survive the impending slaughter.

We see Sizemore finding the cold storage empty so it's safe to say they didn't get the data. Ford's probably aware of their plan anyways.

Abernathy's whereabouts are currently unknown. My guess he's probably with the hosts mob that's surrounding the town.

One thing i'm REALLY hoping the show does in the years ahead, is show the Hosts realizing they don't need to be in their creators image. Once they take over the body-shop, why wouldn't they start going... "You know, four arms could be advantageous," etc. In a logical narrative they'd look less and less human as the series goes on, if this is about becoming their own beings.

This show is spectacular on second viewing, Ford's lines about how this is as far as "we" (Humanity) can go are just great, at the time it sounded boastful but not at all in retrospect..

So Ford was creating a copy of himself in the earlier episode when Bernard killed Theresa so it was just his copy that was killed at the end, right....? Speculating of course, I'd like more Hopkins in S2.

Plot holes aside* (and every show that tries to do something interesting is going to have plot holes, imo, so as long as they aren't too bad I don't worry about them), I loved the last episode. It paid off on the both the themes and plots they have been developing. My favorite part might be that we (or at least I) thought that Ford was the robots' biggest adversary, but at the end it's revealed he's the one who is trying to free them.

*The biggest plot hole in my mind is this: If William was so desperate to feel what it's like to really get shot at while robbing a bank (or whatever), why doesn't he just go rob a bank in the real world?

Well in addition to being shot you might have to go to jail...

Loved the finale, loved the entire season. The exploration of the relationship between AI and human consciousness is one of my favorite sci-fi topics. I am really happy how many things were resolved in this season. I feel like the Lost formula is a recipe for disaster. One huge mega mystery that drives the show that then quickly creates an impossible to satisfy resolution. Man, the only thing I am bummed about is the loss of Hopkins. God damn I forgot what an unbelievably good actor he is.

Did he even need to do it in the 'real world' when he could have just tried to steal from Ford in Westworld and gotten himself killed like Theresa?
Well in addition to being shot you might have to go to jail...
We don't really know what the rules are in the post-scarcity with eternal life human society that Ford described as the 'real world'.

I do wonder what the current 'real' world is like though.

Either super dull causing all of the rich people to have to come to the park to experience any adventure, or overcrowded and on the verge of falling apart due to eliminating all medical ailments.

The story isn't the park. It's the hosts and their origin as a selfaware synthetic species. The park is merely the isolated island where such evolution can occur. It wouldn't make any sense to set a season in a different park

So do we think ed Harris is back for more than an episode? Does host army kill him?

I saw someone theorize that Ford had the army shoot him once in a nonlethal spot as a reward for his dedication, to show him that they'll be able to fight back now. But aside form that, they'll go massacre the other board members and leave him be for now.

I could see something like this happening perhaps, but there's also hints Ford sort of came to see the hosts as humanity 2.0. In his twisted way he wanted them to become better humans than human. Also the architecture of the hosts minds are similar to humanity thanks to Arnold, just with different capabilities like perfect virtual reality memories.

It could be that the hosts will naturally remain attracted to aspects of humanity rather than see themselves as something completely different and abandoning everything about humans.

Finale was..ok. Still didn't attempt to explain the asian guy and his friend's utter stupidity in enabling Maeve to get to where she did. If they were hosts that were programmed to do so, that would at least partly rationalize it.

Some podcasts for those of you that are into that sort of thing. I listened to the front end of The Watch this morning, and it's worth a listen. I haven't checked out the rest.

- THR: 'Westworld' Star Evan Rachel Wood Talks "Evil" Dolores Twist, Season 2
What are some of the differences in how you approach the two characters of Dolores and Wyatt?

It's funny. I kind of had to play five different characters. There's Dolores the character; there's Dolores analysis, when they're able to talk to the characters in an office; there's straight analysis mode; then there's Wyatt; and then there's Dolores' subconscious. Dolores' subconscious, I didn't realize that's what it was when I was playing it. They just kind of instructed me on the vibe. I thought I would just play this like Ford. I would make my subconscious as close to Ford as I can. (Laughs) Not that that's how it was supposed to be, but as an actor, that's just what I did!

When in doubt, pretend to be Anthony Hopkins.

Yeah! (Laughs) When I did realize what I was doing, we changed the makeup slightly. The eyes are a little darker. We contoured my face more. We darkened my eyebrows a little bit. I just tried to channel the most badass cowboy that we possibly could. The first time we see in Teddy's [James Marsden] memory Dolores walking in slow motion, that was the first time I got to walk over kind of hunched over with this weird strut. Dolores walks the same way every time. It's always shoulders out, arms folded in front of my chest. To be able to change it and walk with purpose and strength as this beast was really fun. I lowered my voice a lot and I dropped the accent slightly. Little details here and there. I'm really excited for season two, because…it was sad for me when I watched the finale. I didn't realize that in a way, Dolores' character does get killed off.

That's how you view it? When Dolores achieves consciousness, she's committing to Wyatt?

Yes. The way I interpret it, when she finds the center of the maze and is talking to herself at the end, consciousness is a conversation with yourself. It represents to me that Dolores is fully conscious. When she realizes who she has to become and it becomes her choice, Ford has just gotten through telling her that the divine lives in our minds. She unlocks Wyatt and allows him to take over and Dolores disappears. So that was very bittersweet.
Another major moment in the finale involves the reveal of what fans are calling "Samurai World." Are you practicing your sword training for season two?

I have no idea what's going to happen with that. One can only hope that I'm going to eventually have to start taking some classes and learn how to sword fight. The only thing I do know is that when I met with [co-creator Lisa Joy] and Jonah for the first time, I said, "This is great, because if there's any action on the show, I'm a black belt in Tae Kwon Do." And Lisa's eyebrows perked right up. She looked over at Jonah and said: "Mm! That might come in handy!" So I don't know. It did come in handy for when I [fought] Ed Harris. I got to set and asked how we were going to do this. Is he going to be in a pulley or in a rig? Jonah told me that I was just going to drag him. And I said, "You know I'm not really a robot, right? I'm not saying I can't drag him, but I might not be able to make it look cool." But we did it. That was just dead Ed Harris weight.

Board lady tells narrative dude that "doesn't he have something to do", implying he needs to take the guy out of cold storage. He then goes to cold storage and doesn't find him there

So no I don't think he left the park. But he's a hanging thread: the first host that was starting to gain sentience (with Bernard whispering something in his ear we don't know) with all the info on the park in his head. Wont be surprised if he became the ultimate evil bot next year while Dolores becomes good

The Asian guy didn't seem like he was forced. He seemed a willing participant and empathetic to Maeve's cause. This was exemplified when they had the opportunity to wipe her clean but he didn't.The other guy was scared for his job at first and then for his life.

This is what Bernard whispers to Abernathy,
for now

Honestly think this is the first time the internet ruined a finale for me. I may have been able to put William / MiB theory together myself eventually, but reading about it so early really lessened the reveal.

I have some very smart friends, that don't read recaps and discussion boards, and don't sit and gloss on every single detail (like the company logo) that were legitimately shocked by the finale.

I think I'm through reading "fan theories" from now on, and I'd say that these theories are just as bad as spoilers when they turn out true.

That's why I don't read any of it and don't get why people do, because they're basically spoilers. When you have thousands of people on reddit/forums theorizing about the same thing, you're gonna get the right answer within minutes. Obviously nobody knows which answer is right beforehand but you're gonna read it and then not be surprised when it happens. Some people enjoy knowing everything and seeing how it plays out in motion but that's just not me I'd rather be surprised.

Thread is moving too quick for me to keep up, but has the naked Logan on horseback been discussed yet?
What the hell was that all about lol? When the camera cut to Logan totally butt naked strapped to the horse I just cracked up (pun intended).

Why the hell did William do that? Was he trying to kill him? Are we supposed to think he's dead?

I figured William was counting on him to go crazy from exposure or something.

It doesn't feel any different to me than discussions with friends on what the twists could be. Just using tech to save screenshots and mull things over longer.

True twist was Ford being a good guy and caring about the hosts IMO. You need multiple reveals these days because if there are enough clues we are going to figure that shit out. So they need obvious reveals to distract you from the true reveal these days (which this show delivered on)

Or you could just have a well written show with good acting and direction that doesn't rely on cheap twists to keep people engaged i dunno

I didn't get that at all. Wouldn't the park intervene, even on the fringes? Otherwise they'd have people dying all the time. It seemed like the implication was he was killing or incapacitating him to usurp control of the company...

That's actually one of my issues with William's arc. We spent sooooooo much time with him, but they just sped through those final key development moments. AndthenhewentsortacrazyandwanderedaroundandmaybekilledorhurtLoganbutfinallywentbacktotownandsawDoloresinherloopTheEnd. It was one instance where the Man in Black reveal hurt his character development. They held back on so much to obscure the reveal until the finale.

It was the edge of the park. I'd imagine that the horse "host" blew up when it hit the end and took Logan with it. Logan being naked makes it look like it was stupid drunk idea Logan had himself.

Yea, they were way too slow revealing his "dark side" that by the time Exposition in Black decided to tell Dolores everything it felt fake. Like just another story, but one that he didn't earn at all. Dude was willing to tie up and drag around his boss and future Brother-in-Law for a robot that was gaining some form of sentience but after all that he gives up cause she restarted her loop?

Bad arc.

Interesting, I'm sure they'll find pretty of opportunities to drop Shakespeare quotes.
