What will be February's biggest flop?

ch... if even The Crew can sell at retail more than hyped games like Forza Horizon 2 and Driveclub I'm not sure to trust GAF posts about how Evolve, The Order and Kirby will flop.

Is anyone seriously saying it won't move many units? I think everyone is saying the game is going to suck. Lots of sales doesn't mean it won't, specially when we're looking at a stack of PREORDERS.

well, I figure the word "Flop" would mean something that didn't sale well. I believe that's what this thread is about? Having said that, I SERIOUSLY doubt The Order will flop financially.

When is the Order scheduled to release?

Yeah, I think this is set to take a big fall. Huge marketing campaign, supposed to be a truly current gen title, and it has a bunch of potential. All the warning signs a game may fall flat. I'm hoping that's not the case, but lately..........

My own opinion is that The Order will move units, yes. But I seriously think it's setup for a fall. I haven't watched much gameplay since the first few official ones, so I can't say for definite, but the ones I did see seemed very lacking in gameplay. By that I mean there was a lot of time where the player wasn't in direct control of the character and just watching what was happening on the screen. I hope it isn't so, but I'm dubious about games now. Been burnt too much recently.

Tell me more about this Destiny flop.

As far as I'm concerned yes. I don't mean financially by the way. In that case it's a huge success, and even review-wise it rated very high. But I think after the initial "oh joy this game is great" taste wore off, most people just moved on. And pretty easily I might add. Check out any top 10 disappointments of 2014 list and Destiny usually has a place on it.

So your premise is all those people who thought there was no way Destiny would flop were proven wrong because of your personal opinion.

There's your problem. Impressions from gaffers who have played it over the last couple days have said that the gunplay is fantastic.

The game sold incredible well, has an active user base and there are expansions and sequel plans. Destiny was not a flop and nothing of what you said back that notion. In fact you said:

it's a huge success, and even review-wise it rated very high.

This is the sign that a game is not a flop in any aspect. That only proves that you didn't liked it which is fair.

So...in other words, it wasn't actually flop. Just to your weirdo notion of a "flop."

We're pretty much talking about financials here, so everything you just said is radically irrelevant and silly.

Indeed it is, I don't check out many gameplay videos pre-launch and I'm wholly against pre-ordering any thing now. I check out a few and that's it. Devs have this tendency to over-saturate the internet with gameplay videos now. I just think they spoil a lot of the surprises. I tend to stick to word of mouth, and Youtuber reviews from sources I trust, before I decide to purchase a game.

What the fuck does this even mean?

A flop is a game that sells poorly. It's not a game you feel disappointed by.

I'd assume Kirby sadly, since unlike Hyrule and Bayonetta, I'm seeing very few preorders for it. Hopefully the other 94% Amazon doesn't track is different...

I think quite a few people felt this way about Destiny.
Yet people still play it months later
So to many, it was not a flop, people's wanted Bungie to make a game they wanted, not a game Bungie wanted to make.

No Man's Sky will suffer that same fate

As far as the order, expect a single player game, probably only play it once

That doesn't mean it will suck, it just is what it is

More like a certain group of people "want" the game to flop.....not that the indication is that the game will flop.

Sales wise? I can see Kirby but it all depends on the investment. So even that game with little to no hype/controversy or what have you has a chance of doing well.

Interesting.
So is Evolve already considered a success?
Also, this is a hard question to answer.

I don't know much about RER2, and The Order is just too much of a wild card...

Did we get any early leaked impressions of either game yet?

"I'm tired of cinematic games. Hope they don't succeed so developers can take a hint and not make their games cinematic anymore". Something like that.

That's the politically correct answer. Which, obviously, is irrational. There are other dubious reasons .....you don't want to dig deeper into platform wars and fanboysm -- stealthy waged, tinfoil hat on.

The Order appears to be amazing and the gunplay fantastic. Also it's VERY pretty.

People that say this incense me. As if there wasn't enough room in this industry for everyone's preference to be satiated. I hate platformers and I'm sick of them. But I don't hope developers stop making them.

But the thing is that some people do like them.
Like me! :)

But I think that there is no point in making a game more 'cinematic' if the story sucks, or just doing it to try and cover up bad gameplay design.

But I do think that cinematic games can work when the developer hits that right balance between emphasizing meaningful interaction from the player, and critical story moments.

I think that Uncharted 2 is a game that does this just right.

Is this early impressions from people who have played, or just your thoughts from the clips that were released?

I watched a few of them, and it is no doubt very pretty, but i want to know if the story is good!! That is what is most important to me, and I know that opinion on the story can vary from person to person, but I want to know what people think!

I think what Grief meant wasn't really that there aren't ANY games to play or new releases, but that there aren't many(if any)must have type of titles for a lot of people. There are no Uncharted, GTA, RDR, and Halo(to name a few)type of games at the moment.

Check one of The Order threads. Impressions from people with early copies have been pretty darn positive all around.

Like I said, it's not a bad hypothesis, but can we back it up? So there being no big titles (besides Evolve arguably) means people are going to just chunk money at The Order?

My thoughts from the clips released =P

They never have failed ME but people is different so what I may find enjoyable other would find boring, I am keeping a eye in it mostly because when I buy my PS4 later this year I want to buy some games with it and The Order looks like a good introduction and the story bits they have released seems interesting. Maybe in your case the better is to wait like a week after release to gather impressions from other people and reviews.

Edit: And DON'T limit yourself with only OT and Impressions threads, seek more opinions from other places since OT and Impressions threads can act like echo chambers that would hide things that you later would find annoying =P

I think people are just hungry for new games. Watch Dogs(from a critics and some fans for that matter)was a disappointment, but sold really well for Ubisoft. Unity...same thing. I feel like the AAA industry in some ways continues to get worse. They sell you on the pretty graphics during the marketing push/commercials and conveniently forget to talk about how awesome the gameplay and story are.(or aren't)

It's pretty disgusting to be honest. There aren't many developers left that I trust to make great content. Valve(yes I know it's been awhile but their past efforts are proven for many)Naughty Dog, Blizzard, Rockstar, Rocksteady, Bethesda, Obsidian, and Crystal Dynamics. For me, personally, I'm not gonna run out and buy the latest and greatest games because I may be bored and letdown by all the dogshit. I'll play older games that hold up well and are still awesome until someone delivers something truly amazing.

I guess it's possible. I feel like Watch Dogs was much more widely advertised and hyped before launch, but I suppose the situation could be similar.

Its early days still. 2014 was a shit show in terms of games and the quality (or lack thereof) titles released. The industry is pretty healthy and growing right now with the release of current gen machines. IMO some devs rushed to capitlise on the current gen craze and in doing so neglected the quality of theit titles and maybe (as you said) focused their marketing too much on visuals and not story/gameplay. But you mist also look at the fact that this is a start of a new gen and pretty visuals effectively sells these machines. As devs get to grips with the hardware and the visuals craze dies down, I'm sure then you will see a marketing shift to story and gameplay aspect of games over visuals. Sorry I'm a bit off topic. On topic: I don't really have an opinion on what I think will be a flop this month but I have been hearing a lot of negative impressions on Evolve and that DLC :O That alone doesn't mean it will be a flop but if I had to pick one it'd be Evolve.

These are the pre-orders for The Order at one store

So, it may not do well among critics, but it sure as hell isn't going to flop in terms of sales.

The average number of reserves for the game across 4,200 stores is nowhere near that on average. Not even close.

The Order should do well enough for what it is, and if it reviews well and has good word of mouth it can be big.

As of now though I'm not convinced it will beat Evolve in NPD. Though it might.

Evolve being on three platforms vs the Order's one will probably see to that, unless Evolve is a terrible, unmitigated disaster. Which it still could be, considering how much they've tried to shoot themselves in the foot with their aggressive DLC plans.
