Someone on Reddit made a 30fps vs 60fps site.

Honest to god, the 60FPS ones just look cheap. Dirt 3 and Sleeping Dogs especially. It just makes everything look weird and enhances the artificial nature of it all. Blergh.

Eye candy or bust.

Man, I started to notice the difference with Bayonetta 2 and MK8 videos, but I can't tell the difference in any of these examples.

I've always had trouble with it anyway. I really don't care if a game is 30 FPS or 60 FPS as long as it is stable. The only time I can tell the framerate difference is when it is constantly changing as I am playing it.

the difference isn't significant, it would also be better if you showed it with settings that pushed the game to 30fps vs settings that allowed the game to run at 60fps.

For gaming 60FPS doesn't just look better. It's more responsive. Responsiveness is a big deal, which why all modern fighters aim for 60FPS at least.

I feel a lot of people who can't see the difference just don't know what they are looking for.

Example, When playing third person shooters rotate the camera quickly, the refresh rate really effects how many frames you see of the landscape wizing by. A higher refresh makes it so I am able to pick out details easier, doesn't matter what the numbers are to me, higher is better.

I'm not one of those people who can't stand 30fps but I am a huge fan of highFPS. I'm currently replaying mass effect trilogy on my PC, with the high FPS. I'm constantly blown away at how lifelike the presentation becomes. when I'm capping above 60fps it's like I'm watching the coolest marionette show ever, like it's right in front of me. my brain doesn't get tricked like that with 30fps.

This kind of side-by-side not doing much for me, the FPS count is all about the control and response for me, 60fps just far more slick in control.

There's a world of difference between all those on the site except Sleeping Dogs, because there isn't much action happening in that one.

Just checked it out and the site is broken. Both videos slow down a lot, you're not actually seeing 60fps most of the time.

They should have used webm.

Does it even matter if you have to "look" for it then? Not trying to sound snarky or something..just an honest question.

Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

It's about consistency. Your brain will do all the rest.

If you've got someone playing the exact same game, in a competitive match, the person playing at 30 will be at a disadvantage to a person playing at 60. But in the console space, the playing field is even, and everyone plays at the same rate. So those who absolutely cannot cope without 60FPS are the people who will have their asses handed to them :P

No joke, my brother wanted me to play Halo Anniversary last night and it actually felt bad on my eyes. Too long have I been spoiled by my pc.

Since I see zero difference, I would prefer that GPU grunt be directed more towards "pretty" than "fluid". For those who can see a difference, you have my sympathy.

I guess for those people it would be like if they made the majority of movies in black and white because most people couldn't see colour.

In my case it's like they make most movies in 2D because the majority don't give a toss about 3D.

EDIT: If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that some people's brains are better at detecting movement, while other people's brains are better at other things. Genetics!

That site is a great example of how framerate matters much more in fast paced games than slow ones. It's important in that BF4 racing video but it couldn't matter less in the video of Wei Shen just strolling along the sidewalk.
For control input maybe(it depends on how the animations are made), but I still like seeing visual fluidity on my screen no matter what type of game it is.

I cry when people can't see the difference. It's massive and 30fps is just so bad in comparison. I just finished Dark Souls 2 on PC and I can't imagine having to grind through that at half the frame rate. I wouldn't have bothered. Some things are alright at 30, but it's not desirable in the least.

I always wonder if people who say they can't see a difference are just trolling.

I mean, really? Come on.

Yep, the people telling you that they cannot tell the difference are trolling everyone. They liked being told they need to get their eyes checked, because they are blind or have some issue.

I cannot tell the difference that well in the OT. I can tell the difference on the Bioshock and Fzero. I cannot tell the difference in the sword swinging.

It is much much easier to feel the difference in a game than simply looking at a small sized clip.

I still think it all comes down to what you've got the most exposure to.

If everything video related was 60fps or higher, 30FPS would be what stands out.

People who game primarily on PC will be the biggest advocates, because the majority of their gaming is done at that framerate, so anything less feels slow. Console games for the most part are 30FPS, and 60FPS games are the exception.

Now if only I could get all my netflix and blu-ray content in 60p recording :/

Also, how can anyone that calls themself a gaming enthusiast not discern the difference in controller responsiveness.

Because the human brain is very good at recognizing and remembering patterns.

If the game is consistent in the slightest, you'll adjust just fine. Now if the framerate is fluctuating between 15 fps, and 60, and it's doing it often, at random intervals, you'll obviously notice.

I refuse to believe that someone without sight problems cannot see the difference. It's just impossible.

Some people haven't trained their eyes. Show this thing to your non gamer parent or family member. They probably won't be able to tell either.

Also most people watch 24FPS material--TV and Movies.

I cry when other people cry about inconsequential things...

I agree here too. It's not something everybody has to have, or know about. Some games can benifit from the extra time to do better graphics, like frostbite/cryengine on ps3/xb360

That said once you start playing games that way and loving it, then it can be difficult to go back.

Yep, and I think that is the issue here. For the individuals who have been playing primarily games that run at 60fps it is jarring and immediately noticeable. For those who haven't been, they are used to 30fps and they have a difficult time seeing it.

But I'm not going to sit here and tell those that cant see it that they need to get their eyes checked, they are blind, that it is so incredibly clear. Cause it isn't.

It was given away for free a couple of weeks ago. And it is cool, although I still suck at it, it feels like I die every time I put my head out from cover.

Everyone does. Welcome to RO2.

I've never been a big proponent is the war of 30FPS vs. 60FPS, but it's easy as hell to tell the difference with these clips.

Even with the first clip (DIRT 3) it's easy to see the difference, when you can see the juddering in the surroundings when the car is going around the mountain turn.

I think 60fps looks super weird for third person games, almost like the optional soap opera effect most HDTV's have. Love it for everything else though esp racing, fighting and fps.

I honest to god can barely see a difference between these. Nothing that would affect my experience in any way. I'll enjoy both 30fps and 60fps, while you guys fight over them. :)

Some people are either completely unobservant or they reaaally need to see an eye doctor. The difference in the smoothness of the motion is really clear.

When I had to check my eyes for the army, they told me that I have 20/20 vision. I still can't see a difference without paying close attention.

People unable to tell should be sad rather than shrug it off. They are missing out big time.
I believe part of the reason is that we have entire generations now growing up on shitty LCDs. They never knew the beautiful fluidity(and black levels, but that's another topic) of CRTs.

PC gamers generally get the option to reduce resolution, etc. in exchange for increased fps, so for them it's less of an issue. I can see though for console gamers who don't have that option it could become divisive.

I would agree if what I saw looked "choppy", or any of the other descriptions people use, but for me they both look fine. Maybe my brain is just interpolating the missing frames, and yours can't? :)
