MGS5 - "Snake won't really speak much at all. More of a silent protagonist."

My point is that I didn't notice how silent he was because I was enjoying the gameplay side of everything. He talked as much as I would have expected him to and I am glad he wasn't just mumbling the whole time in the open world like in GTAV where they never shut up.

The Order just got roasted for being too cinematic with no gameplay and too much talking/cutscenes, now MGS is leaning towards more gameplay/less talking and people are getting angry.

I just think people are going to bitch no matter what.

Sounds a bit daft for an MGS game. Big Boss would always get carried away when talking about things, even something ridiculous like a cardboard box.

Silent protagonist my ass. That old git wouldn't stop talking at the end of MGS4.

Considering he just came out of a coma, seems to mainly works solo now so is used to spending large gaps speaking to nobody anyway, and is about to be put various stages of trauma hell; BB's lack of speaking speaking actually could make sense from a psychological point of view if written well.

I already ate crow when I said that the open-world gameplay, slow-motion stuff and marking enemies would ruin MGS which is why I won't judge this decision for now.

i feel like this is how big boss has always been. this means nothing to me. Plus it fits the "i'm already a demon" theme.

I always assumed the silence in the awkward as hell Afghanistan intro was due to some later to be revealed plot twist.

Guess it just turns out to be shitty decision making/ game design.

Well then I guess I disagree big time. GZ is the best playing MGS ever in my opinion.

S'all good, I get that tons of people like it. Doesn't really feel like MGS to me, but I was hoping at least the typical other MGS stuff would get me through it. Then boom this.

...I'm sure it'll still probably be fine, but they really should've said something other than "silent protagonist"
or just not addressed this at all.
It's painting a bad picture in my mind already.

I don't think there's a single person here who can't understand why this change was made, but there's going to be a ton of people who will refuse to.

What's your take on it? If it's about cutscene amount, Snake was never the one who did much of the talking.
I think there will be deeper plot related connections to this, he's also supposed to have some kind of amnesia/brain damage.

Yeah. I'll take "beehive in the throat" Snake over Kiefer's boring "keptchuwaitinghuh.."

The game will turn out to be great. But it will never be the same without Hayter. Sutherland is just what he is...Sutherland.

Snake is Hayter. Hayter is Snake.

Cant believe Kojima kicked him out especially after what he did with Twin Snakes. Hayter took a paycut to bring the original cast back to Twin Snakes.

Great decision Kojima!

Incredibly bad comparison. Metal Gear is a staple series of the gaming culture and has always achieved balance of cinematic cutscenes and superb gameplay.

The Order was bashed because it was *Cutscene**Run along narrow corridor**Cutscene* which suits that IP fine. But Metal Gear is completely different.

Not to mention dialogue/information was always a nice side option for the player who wanted to immerse themselves in Kojima's world. This sounds like they're removing it. No more funny optional/gag codec conversations by the sounds of it.

I was never really a fan of that, if you want an avatar, give us character creation. If you have a fixed protagonist, he might as well speak.

How is this different from previous installments?

Typical Codec conversation:

Character: "[5 pages of dialouge]...Metal Gear"
Snake: "Metal Gear???"
Character: "[8 more pages of dialouge and explanation]..nanomachines"
Snake: "Nanomachines???
Character: "[11 more pages of dialogue, flashback cutscene, and then 4 more pages of dialouge]...Patriots"
Snake: "Patriots???"

This is what I'm thinking too. If they write him as becoming detached and isolated due to the pain he has suffered, it could work for the story.

Snake at least repeating in question form is a lot better than him just staring blankly into space like if he was comatose.

I don't like this at all :(
I want a comprehensive codec with cool and funny/informative/weird calls, this is part of MGS magic.

The codec is one way. You can also get a voice clip by aiming at something and pressing a button.
I don't know if I like that. Like, codec conversations are super antiquated but at the same time I feels like part of the franchise dan, to me.

Valuable life lesson there.

It's always been linear too. Things change.
Yeah, for the worse.

For the worse, though. That style of overly long exposition via cutscenes has overstayed its welcome, but Kojima was too late to adopt.

ND knows how to use cutscenes appropriately without boring you to death.
I don't know, I like the cut scenes in MGS. I'd like to think that is some of the appeal of this series. Kojima is never going to be Naughty Dog, nor should he.

lol was it Kojima's decision to have him repeat stuff over and over in dialogue?

That said, he still had a good number of original lines in codecs. Now we'll just hear characters talking to themselves. Which has been done before in certain codec calls though...

MGS has always been a talky series

Metal Gear Solid 1 basically defines this.

Snake rarely goes off long tangents and speeches in the codec conversations like most characters but he does respond and shares his opinions of the world. His somewhat ignorant nature and oblivious knowledge mirror the player in the world so his exaggerated questions help give the player a better connection with the character.

Metal Gear Solid 3 does the same thing all though the exaggerations are taken a bit further and Snake is even less of a talker in cutscenes here.

With the open world style of Meal Gear Solid V, it is understandable that they'd cut out conversations over the radio considering Big Boss is always on the move with no pauses over the Codec. However, limiting his voice even in cutscenes may take away a key part that connects the players to the character.

Considering the time between the release of MGS3 and MGSIV was close to four years and the time between MGSIV and MGSV will have been more than seven years, I'd say it's even more disappointing. It's not like they make these games quickly. At this rate, it will be probably at least another five years before we get a MGSVI.

I thought MGS1's were perfect. MGS4's cutscenes are just overkill, poorly written and needing some editing.

Big Boss not talking is the end all be all. But only if Miller isn't talking your ear off every 10 seconds like in Ground Zeroes. It is so annoying to be constantly be distracted while I'm trying to listen in on guards or footsteps or some other such thing.

There should be an option to mute Miller after you've heard him the first time. I would mute the game audio every time I had to replay a mission

Even with MGS' heavy cutscenes, there is still plenty of gameplay and replayability in the series.

Kojima gets a pass when it comes to cinemas since he was the one that revolutionized them and makes them better than most devs out there.

I'm sure Snake being silent is just them improving the dialogue, as opposed to them cutting anything. Keifer probably gave them advice in making the dialogue seem more natural.

If Kojima is worried people won't finish his game, then I don't think we should be worried about the lack of anything in this game.

I can't believe people are happy about this change. So much of Big Boss's character was revealed in optional codec calls throughout MGS3, like his fear of vampires and weird need to eat everything. Same for the supporting cast. Paramedic's interest in cloning was in an optional codec, and so was pretty everything we know about Zero. Peace Walker and MGS4 suffered in world building and character with the removal of context sensitive codec calls, and its a shame TPP is moving in direction of Kaz shouting in your when you look at things.
