So, I've seen some screens with button mappings like "Journal" or "Sprint". Are these own configured labels, or is that integrated steam controller support from the game?

Both.

If the game has bindings that were made for it or if you have a custom one, you can name the label.

CSD is getting the controller support next week

tumblr_inline_nvx30kU6FO1rad51e_1280.png

First off, the Steam Controller has been added to the list of controllers supported by CSD. I’ve implemented a new UI for the buttons to better illustrate how to manipulate the touchpads on the controller. For more details and some impressions, be sure to check out my blog post from a few weeks back.

I’m adding a special CSD preset for the Steam Controller so that all you have to do is boot up the game and it’ll be instantly configured for the gamepad. I’ll also be posting an official guide that gives some general tips and tricks on using the controller, etc. It’s been a ton of fun playing with the controller and figuring out how best to implement it into the game, and while the sequel will expand on it a great deal more, I think this implementation is pretty darn fun. You’ll get to try it yourself next week!

I'm pretty sure the extender they're talking about is a male to female USB extension cable.

He means what's in the right top corner. It's what Krejlooc posted earlier.

That's what also the text says on the support page

Yeah. To add to this, it makes more sense for the dock to contain the female connection and to use the supplied cable to connect the dock to your machine, rather than an empty piece of plastic needing a completely different cable that isn't supplied

Mine's apparently scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday. Neat, I kind of forgot about this since the day orders went up.

I have a feeling I'll still be playing most console ports on an Elite/SCUF/Hitbox but I'm still interested to try it for a bunch of traditionally KB/M-only games.

Surprisingly the Controller seems to do perfectly well as a complete standard controller with analogue simulation on the right pad, as seen in this Dark Souls / Witcher 3 vid - https://youtu.be/fzl30LLvd98

It'll be nice if that is the case, since I'd no longer need the ds3 and can stick with the Steam Controller assuming I'm happy with it for those games too.

Thinking of making the Link OT, since I also made the IHS thread back then, and also merging the latter into the former going forward.

Shouldn't there be also a Steam Machines/SteamOS OT too?

Good idea. Someone should do a Steam Machines / OS OT if they are interested in it and using one or both.

Judging by the responses here and even more on the Steam forums, the interest in the machines is extremely low. Valve has stated Steam Os will never have an exclusive. These machines are going to be a tough sell.

What can one say about the Steam Machine, you can play some of the games that you can play in Windows, just far less.

The link is simply a streaming device, I don't know how much can really be discussed about it.

The controller has gone from being ridiculed to quite a hot topic. The fact that the controller works in Windows makes Steam OS that much less interesting for people.

Just ordered mine. I am quite excited, finally someone competent has a different take on a controller. From my pov the classic dual stick layout was dominant for far too long, i would have expected Sony or MS to get something like this working...but they just kept going with the safe route.
Judging from videos this thing seems to work really, really well considering that its a completely new way to control games and people didnt have much time with it.
I would also love to control my consoles with this thing.

The PS4 controller comes the closest to this Steam controller. The trackpad in the middle on the PS4 controller could be used like the trackpad on the right of the Steam controller.

Plus, dual analogs feel great, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I wonder how comfortable these Steam controller's are during long hours of play. Also the build quality.

This controller is neat though.

And Nintendo been giving gamers new control schemes to play games with. So the idea is nothing new.

Good points. I still might make the Link thread, because people are going to be curious how it performs (we don't know if there are going to be any reviews, so is there going to be a review thread at all) and as I said I'd merge my IHS thread into it. The latter is far too old to for me to just update the OP with Link stuff. Thread would be more about IHS in the long run. I imagine lot of people mifght only try IHS now after getting a Link, so this would be a fresh start.

I'm not getting into another argument of this nature. The simple fact is that dual analog controls suck at these tasks, and render entire genres of games either unplayable, or unenjoyable at best.

The hope is for the Steam controller to be sufficiently apt at these types of control scenarios to allow you to play games that depend on them without requiring a surface for a mouse.

Doesn't sound like you've followed this well.

The PS4 touch pad does not function the same as the Steam Controller. The big sell is trackball simulation thanks to the haptics and software/firmware. The sensation of using it is that of moving a literal ball in the controller. It has simulated mass, size, and from that it gives momentum and the ability to be flicked around and brought to an appropriate stop, whether by the thumb or just the momentum running out.

The result is a lot more control over 1:1 velocity based movements with larger movements than the surface area of the pad could support if it was behaving as a normal touchpad.

Better still, is being able to blend two of these together when playing mouse centric games

Oh, not controller arguments again!

There really should be a contest of sorts where people with their preferred input methods go through a series of games against each other. Settle it once and for all or something.

What's there to settle? Everyone sensible knows the result already.

This is mad, though. Nintendo gave us the square, so the wheel isn't new.

LoL. Rather than a controller preference argument, my argument is simply of the different functional use of the DS4 trackpad and a mode of the right pad on the Steam Controller. People should pick whatever they like best on a PC

The PS4 trackpad is nothing like the ones on this controller though since the haptic feedback seems to make a huge difference.
Dual analog is okay at best, in comparison to a mouse input it is broken for precise pointing.

I think I might have to make a pre-prepared responses section to the OT considering how often these kind of comments and drive by posts fly around

Oh, I have a question.

How does Skullgirls play on the pad? Can you set up the right pad to work like a regular 8 directional 8-pad and get any sort of sensation about which direction exactly you're pressing in?

There's videos on Youtube from years ago showing controller (dual thumbstick) players up against keyboard and mouse players. So that's already settled.

I do think Some Steam Controller vs. 360 vs. KBM videos would do a great job illustrating how the Steam Controller is, especially across a wide variety of games.

When it's out proper, and more people have had the chance to use, and get used to it, I'm sure we'll see such videos.

It will be interesting to see what the larger opinion of it is.

I preordered on June 25th (before the cutoff), but haven't received any information since the September email to verify my address. Is that normal?

I ordered mine August 18th and received a ship address confirmation about a week ago. What does that email indicate by the way?

I haven't either, but under account settings/purchase history it says shipping soon. I ordered on June 4th.

The first rule of Controller Fight Club is we don't talk about Controller Fight Club...

Honestly there is no perfect, ticks every box controller and even the Steam Controller isn't going to achieve that. It mainly boils down to application of said controllers set up in certain titles mixed in with masses of personal preference. Anyone saying 'best controller ever' really needs to append their statement with '...for me'.

I agree, the Steam Controller is a great jack of all trades type of device, probably good for most games but probably a master of none. Fighting sticks, steering wheels, those fancy flight sticks will never be replaced.

Off topic a bit but I can't even get steam to load right now. trying to buy something and I keep getting errors, can't connect to steam communities barely able to load the front page etc.

It was fine an hour ago.

It's fine for me. Might want to check the Steam thread in the community section.

Absolutely.

Mine is still waiting to ship. :(

No its not 'completely' broke, its just not ideal. There is a difference.

Guess that is putting it nicely.

I plan on playing mouse based strategy games on my home theater PC with the Steam controller. I've played games like Civ 5 and Endless Legend with mouse emulation on a XB1 controller, it isn't pretty. I'll keep my xbox one controller for console style games. Maybe. Perhaps I'll end up liking the Steam controller more for regular games once I get used to it. Those haptic pads are going to make a difference.

I can tell just by looking at demos that using the left analog stick to move and the right track pad to turn/aim would feel pretty much perfect for me.

So, FedEx tracking says 10/6/15 as the ship date, 10/10/15 as the delivery date and there has been no progress other than the label has been created. Should I be concerned? I don't use fedex very often.

Edit: I'm not alone I see...

FedEx has my delivery set for today, but it's still sitting on "label created" in their IL warehouse. I'm in the US. Hopefully it shows up today but not getting my hopes up.
