So, I've seen some screens with button mappings like "Journal" or "Sprint". Are these own configured labels, or is that integrated steam controller support from the game?

First off, the Steam Controller has been added to the list of controllers supported by CSD. Ive implemented a new UI for the buttons to better illustrate how to manipulate the touchpads on the controller. For more details and some impressions, be sure to check out my blog post from a few weeks back.
Im adding a special CSD preset for the Steam Controller so that all you have to do is boot up the game and itll be instantly configured for the gamepad. Ill also be posting an official guide that gives some general tips and tricks on using the controller, etc. Its been a ton of fun playing with the controller and figuring out how best to implement it into the game, and while the sequel will expand on it a great deal more, I think this implementation is pretty darn fun. Youll get to try it yourself next week!
Looks like Valve are putting out Steam Controller Support pages with info - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_cat.php?id=107
Extender is confirmed.

I'm pretty sure the extender they're talking about is a male to female USB extension cable.
He means what's in the right top corner. It's what Krejlooc posted earlier.
That's what also the text says on the support page
Mine's apparently scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday. Neat, I kind of forgot about this since the day orders went up.
I have a feeling I'll still be playing most console ports on an Elite/SCUF/Hitbox but I'm still interested to try it for a bunch of traditionally KB/M-only games.
Thinking of making the Link OT, since I also made the IHS thread back then, and also merging the latter into the former going forward.
Shouldn't there be also a Steam Machines/SteamOS OT too?

Just ordered mine. I am quite excited, finally someone competent has a different take on a controller. From my pov the classic dual stick layout was dominant for far too long, i would have expected Sony or MS to get something like this working...but they just kept going with the safe route.
Judging from videos this thing seems to work really, really well considering that its a completely new way to control games and people didnt have much time with it.
I would also love to control my consoles with this thing.
But it's completely "broke" for anything which requires fast and accurate pointing and aiming.Plus, dual analogs feel great, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Judging by the responses here and even more on the Steam forums, the interest in the machines is extremely low. Valve has stated Steam Os will never have an exclusive. These machines are going to be a tough sell.
What can one say about the Steam Machine, you can play some of the games that you can play in Windows, just far less.
The link is simply a streaming device, I don't know how much can really be discussed about it.
The controller has gone from being ridiculed to quite a hot topic. The fact that the controller works in Windows makes Steam OS that much less interesting for people.

Also wanna hear more about the Link, if folks can turn it into a tv box.
The PS4 controller comes the closest to this Steam controller. The trackpad in the middle on the PS4 controller could be used like the trackpad on the right of the Steam controller.
Plus, dual analogs feel great, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I wonder how comfortable these Steam controller's are during long hours of play. Also the build quality.
This controller is neat though.
And Nintendo been giving gamers new control schemes to play games with. So the idea is nothing new.
Oh, not controller arguments again!
There really should be a contest of sorts where people with their preferred input methods go through a series of games against each other. Settle it once and for all or something.

The PS4 trackpad is nothing like the ones on this controller though since the haptic feedback seems to make a huge difference. The PS4 controller comes the closest to this Steam controller. I think I might have to make a pre-prepared responses section to the OT considering how often these kind of comments and drive by posts fly around

There's videos on Youtube from years ago showing controller (dual thumbstick) players up against keyboard and mouse players. So that's already settled.
I do think Some Steam Controller vs. 360 vs. KBM videos would do a great job illustrating how the Steam Controller is, especially across a wide variety of games.
I preordered on June 25th (before the cutoff), but haven't received any information since the September email to verify my address. Is that normal?

The first rule of Controller Fight Club is we don't talk about Controller Fight Club...
Honestly there is no perfect, ticks every box controller and even the Steam Controller isn't going to achieve that. It mainly boils down to application of said controllers set up in certain titles mixed in with masses of personal preference. Anyone saying 'best controller ever' really needs to append their statement with '...for me'.
Off topic a bit but I can't even get steam to load right now. trying to buy something and I keep getting errors, can't connect to steam communities barely able to load the front page etc.
It was fine an hour ago.

I agree, the Steam Controller is a great jack of all trades type of device, probably good for most games but probably a master of none. Fighting sticks, steering wheels, those fancy flight sticks will never be replaced.

looks like the French have the priority![]()
No its not 'completely' broke, its just not ideal. There is a difference.
Doesn't sound like you've followed this well.
The PS4 touch pad does not function the same as the Steam Controller. The big sell is trackball simulation thanks to the haptics and software/firmware. The sensation of using it is that of moving a literal ball in the controller. It has simulated mass, size, and from that it gives momentum and the ability to be flicked around and brought to an appropriate stop, whether by the thumb or just the momentum running out.
The result is a lot more control over 1:1 velocity based movements with larger movements than the surface area of the pad could support if it was behaving as a normal touchpad.

Better still, is being able to blend two of these together when playing mouse centric games
FedEx has my delivery set for today, but it's still sitting on "label created" in their IL warehouse. I'm in the US. Hopefully it shows up today but not getting my hopes up.
