By the time they finally got it made the executive he was specifically shouting out in the pitch reel was no longer there.

...which might be why the motherfucker finally got made.

It's going to be interesting to see how Tom Rothman gets along with Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios on the Spider-man films.

Omg really Jesus did they not watch the trailers?

Was crazy. Maybe 30% of the audience was like boys and girls under 10. I mean sure I watched R rated horror or action movies as a kid, saw nude scenes and whatnot. But this was so over the heads of kids in a lot of ways, I couldn't imagine ever watching this as a kid with my parents or taking my kid to this film.

Bet you those parents will think twice about superhero films the next time lol.

Kids are going to be taken to watch the movie and the parents will see that its not a family friendly Marvel movie. So the next time, when the sequal releases it will affect sales.

Reminds me of those stories where they'd stock hentai on the same shelves of other animated fare, completing ignoring the film rating.

Fuck me. And the thing is I can believe it. New to opening day in London and the cinema was packed. I was talking to people who didn't seem to be huge comic fans talking about seeing it. It's insane. Tom Rothman must be looking like the biggest fool of a film producer. He hates comic book movies despite them making money hand over fist, they had a completed script for a R rated comic book movie that made $100mill opening weekend domestic on a $40mill budget for almost a decade that they sat there doing nothing. Wow.

Your head of Sony Pictures, ladies and gentlemen.

Dude there literally was a 4 or 5 year old in the theater and two parents with their at least 10 to 12 year old kids a few rows in front of me. Didn't really get to see in the back of the complex but i'm sure i saw at least two to three other kids. Like what the fuck.

Milking comic book nerds worked out well for the movie industry.

comic book nerds probably account for maybe 30-40mil domestic, tops.

Seeing as this film is clearing 100 mil in 4 days guaranteed, I'm guessing that ain't comic book nerds lining up, for the most part.

(comic book nerds can barely account for 200k in comics sales a month)

How big of an audience do you think this type of person is?

We might live in a world where Deadpool is bigger than X-Men.
I would be ok with this.

That's why he's perfect for Deadpool. Who better to explain Cable than someone who can break the 4th wall? Or better yet just blow it all off in a quick bard.

"That's Cable! He travels through time, like the Terminator! And he's a dick like his dad! "

Tim Miller. He did the FX for Scott Pilgrim and some video games.

His first feature as a director.
...is that why Blur made the CGI reel?

Sorry, High Moon is on the Destiny train now.
Transformers Fall of Cybertron sequel first.
With the success of the film wonder if they'll be another game for Deadpool, doesn't Activision still have the licensed for it... Platinum could make a game.

Deadpool by Platinum would be incredible. There's essentially no limits. Batshit (budget) Bayonetta.
The final level of Rising, except the whole game.

I'm gonna be honest. That is some of the worst BO prediction than I have ever seen.

Like, what? The majority of sales aren't from people taking their children on mistake. Heck, there are tons of families who will see this deadpan and the see the next one. A lot of kids were in my theater and they really enjoyed (they were actually amazingly good in the theater. In fact, for a full house, everyone was mature and had a great time).

So, nah. You are kinda 100% wrong.

There will be lots of showings where the kids will watch the movie without their parents.

I think there has been a shift in parental attitudes among parents who came of age in the 90s, during the era of gangsta rap and violent videogames, and this has fedback into the wider popular culture.

Just think of some of the lyrical content of some of the most mainstream pop music, then try and remember the last time there was any significant controversy about any music artist. Even when someone is trying to create controversy (a la Miley Cyrus), the reaction is mostly 'meh', from even relatively conservative places. I haven't heard anyone I know who restricts the music their kids can listen to at all really, and I live in a very conservative/religious part of the country.

I don't know a parent that grew up post Mortal Kombat that doesn't let their 11-12 year old kids play M rated games. Sometimes younger for your CoDs and stuff that are M rated for more 'acceptable' reasons.

Not that I doubt there will be some very confused parents who are totally out to lunch, but really the movie is named Deadpool and the poster has him using the gun as a phallic instrument, so even if you don't look at the rating should tell you this ain't the avengers. I just think there have been some fairly major cultural shifts as to what is acceptable. Because the people with ~10 year old kids now grew up with all this shit, and the internet makes it basically impossible to restrict access in any meaningful kind of way anyway.

This movie will most likely have GREAT home video and rental sales due to the fact that so many kids want to see it but can't buy tickets because of its rating.

I know many kids who want me to explain the plot of the movie because they aren't old enough to buy tickets.

The trailers were edited to hell and back except online. (even in front of R-rated movies in theaters)

I chuckled a few times during Deadpool, I've been onboard with this type of humor in comics over the last 25 years. Sure took ages to get to this point.

This type of humor can be found in Punisher, Judge Dredd and Lobo comics.
Dont forget Keith Giffen's version of the Justice League where Green Lantern Guy Gardner takes his date Ice Maiden to a XXX theater.

The Guardians film also dipped it's toe into fun and humor and a mainstream audience didnt seem to have a problem with the tone.

The Clive Owen film Shoot Em Up, has a similar tone to Deadpool, was that film just too early to resonate with audiences? Or did Shoot Em Up go too far with unbelievable over the top sequences?

Shoot Em Up comparison is spot on. Really enjoyed Deadpool but I found the action and definitely the villain far better in that. Less blatant cg work too.

If you put Clive Owen in a supersuit and released that now it would have been the success it should have been

We're definitely getting a sequel now...

AND CABLE

At some point Cable needs to say "I cannot sanction your buffoonery.".

I believe Rothman is not involved in anything to do with the Spiderman movies, as I believe Amy Pascual (now ex-co-chairman of Sony Pictures) stepped down to handle the Spider-man deal exclusively as a Producer along side Kevin Feige.
I don't remember all the specifics, but I think this was done to shield Rothman from having a hand on Spider-man and allowing the franchise to be what it needs to be (i.e. under Marvel's creative control)

my personal speculation is that while Sony will remain the face of all final decisions made, Marvel (aka K. Feige) will likely be steering the creative ship on the Spidey franchise for a while. Whatever spin-offs Sony had planned will not be happening, and they will completely fold into the plan for the MCU as long as they are putting out a "Sony" branded Spidey related movie ever 2-3 years.

I don't think I would have ever imagined a deadpool movie will make 100 in it's domestic run... let alone on it's opening week. It was a refreshing marvel movie to watch after stagnation of the current line up of super hero formula.

Does anyone know how Zoolander 2 did yesterday? That film looks like a hot mess, and this tweet from a Zoolander superman uses the term "crushing disappointment" to describe his feelings.

Think it'll be the first huge bomb of the year?

There were maybe 7 or 8 people in my 5PM showing.
Movie was so damn disappointing and literally 1 good actual joke not in the trailers.
Movie was weird as hell, it was like it had ADHD especially with the cameos(was like 1 every 5 minutes)

The numbers literally just keep going up for the possible OW.

I am ready to live in a world where Deadpool grosses more than Batman vs. Superman.

I watched the movie last night. It was superb! Very enjoyable, although the villain was kind of weak. The movie was sold out for the rest of the night and people LOVED it. Everyone clapped at the end

Who was it in the Box office thread that thought Deadpool would be the first film to open over 50M but fail to hit 100M domestic?

You will have to up that to 100M opening and less than 200M total.

If we are looking at more than 110M for the 4 day opening, Deadpool might end up being the highest grossing X-film domestic. It would only need so so legs for a comic film to get there.

There's not that much competition in the coming weeks. I feel like the movies also going to end up with better legs than anyone expected as well.

300m+ in the cards?
