MoonKnight, Blade, X-Force, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Doom, and fucking Spiderman.

I wish Marvel would have kept more of their licenses.

Is there anyway for them to get them back?

I went to see this at the movie tavern. Loved every bit of it. It was too crude for my wife. Oh well.

MoonKnight and Blade are with Marvel, I would not be surprised at them to be getting Fantastic 4/Doom back soon though.

Speaking of Kingsman - might be worth looking at its legs for an idea of where this film might ultimately end up.

Keep in mind, Kingsman didn't have the benefit of being directly tied to the property it was goofing on, too.

Eh... Deadpool, despite being obscure for the general audience, still has a fanbase, unlike Kingsman. There will definitely be some frontloading to Deadpool, but I could still see a 3x multiplier, which would be excellent for it.

Seeing Deadpool tonight. When booking my tickets a large amount of seats had already been booked. Won't be surprised if it's a packed screening.

Well, they made a deal for Spider-Man to co-produce with Sony. He'll crossover with Avengers stuff. As Spider-Man is the most popular comic book character in the world, this is probably the best you could ever hope for. Especially now that the future distribution of Bond movies are in contention, Sony will want to hang onto their biggest earner for dear life.

Moon Knight and Blade, to my knowledge, are already home at Marvel. Moon Knight never left and Blade returned after New Line Cinemas opted not to continue with the series. Ghost Rider, Daredevil, and Punisher too, Sony, Fox, and Lionsgate gave those up willingly.

X-Men, Deadpool, and all related characters will probably never leave Fox either. They're consistent earners. It's a lucrative property. Fox has no reason to sell.

The biggest question mark is Fantastic Four and Doom. Fox just made a movie that fucking failed spectacularly, so it's unlikely they'll make a direct sequel. They may try and reboot again in 5 years or whatever, or they may follow Sony's lead and strike a deal to co-produce. My understanding though is that there is some bad blood between Marvel and Fox. The property has potential and Fox won't give it up entirely, is my instinct.

Also, don't forget Namor, who I think is still locked up at Universal. It's complicated, but if I understand correctly, it's a Mexican stand-off where Universal can't make a Namor movie without Marvel's approval and Marvel can't make one without Universal's approval and neither company wants to budge. I could be wrong though. Same thing for Hulk too, essentially. My understanding is that Universal still holds the distribution rights to any solo Hulk movies, which is one of the reasons why there still hasn't been a sequel to The Incredible Hulk (other than the fact that it didn't turn a profit at the box office).

Deadpool will need pretty good legs to beat Man of Steel domestic.
Isn't Deadpool already on track to have a bigger opening weekend than Man of Steel? Unlike Man of Steel it also has very good word of mouth, everyone seems to love it. At this point I think Deadpool beating Man of Steel domestically could happen.

Just saw it. It was alright.

I liked Kingsman a bit more, if I had to pick. Theater was packed for an early morning showing, though

A Deadpool movie will likely outgross the X-Men movies during the opening weekend. What a time to be a comics fan.

Fox should give the guy who leaked the test footage online a huge thank you (it was probably the director himself, anyway).

No. Man of Steel made $44M on its first Friday without Thursday previews. If you throw in previews (as is the case with the deadpool number), it was $56M, and nearly $129M for the weekend. Deadpool will make about that much over its 4-day holiday weekend.

It's not impossible or anything for Deadpool to top MoS with this opening, but it won't get there on mediocre legs.

They need to fast-track Deadpool 2 (DP and Cable team-up flick) and X-Force (starring Deadpool). Although I'm sure they're already doing something like this after this weekends results :)

Deadpool is as funny as it is because of the R-rating. This movie absolutely would not be as good or successful as a PG-13 film.

Though I agree that just slapping an R-rating on a film isn't the answer. A quality film with an R-rating and the right marketing can succeed.

And let's not kid ourselves; Deadpool's marketing team deserves as SERIOUS raise. I saw the trailers for films like Dredd and considered passing them up altogether because of how bland they looked, but Deadpool's marketing has been nothing short of genius.

And, again, with a super-low budget (comparatively), Deadpool is absolutely going to be making SERIOUS bank, and studios love low-risk, high-reward films. Deadpool cost only a fraction of a typical Marvel movie's budget, yet it's going to make a much higher percentage of profit.

A quality film with a PG-13 rating and the right marketing would succeed even more. That's why this isn't a license to just start making your "comic book" movies R-rated. What it should probably mean is that if the source calls for the movie being R, then you don't have to be afraid of the rating as long as you can make a good movie true to the source. And even that isn't a guarantee, because you still have to market it correctly.

Truth right there.

How can you even compare a movie like Deadpool to Kingsman?

Well...

Here's the thing: Fox did this last year already. Right around the same time, too. Not as successfully, obviously.

But they called it Kingsman last year. They made a crude, silly, violent action-comedy that both poked fun at, and paid homage to, a specific style of action movie. They released it on Valentine's weekend, and watched as it made a lot of money for them.

Seriously: we just saw this happen last year.

Like that, basically.

Your time will come soon, Dredd.

Watch them whip up some new ads this weekend with Deadpool talking about how much money he is making. Break the fourth wall by having him talk about box office receipts.

I don't think the message is that more movies should be R its that they shouldn't be afraid of being themselves. It's crazy considering how popular deadpool is that it took him that long to even get a movie during this boom. SS should R as well but I'm willing to bet that has more to do with them courting the Batman crowd more than anything.

While I don't think Fox should give everything to Disney I'm really bummed we won't see any interaction with Deadpool and Spderman. Those books are so great.

Marketing was on point for Deadpool. It's still hard to believe that a R Rated fucking DEADPOOL movie is breaking records. Pretty exciting stuff.

The time for that to happen was last year right after the release of that bomb. If Fox wasn't going to give it up then, then I don't know what makes them short of all their other franchises going tits up (remember, one of the biggest reasons Sony made the Spider-Man deal is because they don't have much in the way of tentpole franchises outside of Spider-Man, especially if they lose Bond like most are expecting them to).

I knew the film would do well, but on pace for a $130 million opening weekend? That's insane.

Something tells me Deadpool 2 is going to have a budget much larger than $58 million.

Now this better mean that they decide to do a Dredd sequel. Prequel. Sidequel. Whatever the fuck.

I don't think this gives a greenlight for studios to start pumping out R rated comic based films. Deadpool had amazing marketing that actually worked and is much more than a superhero film with more blood.

That being said I will take another Dredd film any day of the week.

It's worth pointing out that this is basically what happens when the marketing campaign for a movie works on all fronts.

They fucking nailed it

Glad it's doing well. Was a little apprehensive about watching it because they trailers were terrible. Movie was on point with the humor mostly; a few bad eggs here or there but it was really nicely realized.

Surprising how many senior citizens I saw at the matinee for this movie and man oh man, the kind of laughs I heard were like when your uncle hears a dirty racist joke that he's just enjoying just way too much. There was a guy behind me lamenting how his 16 year-old daughter couldn't watch the movie and made the strangest comparison: "You know, there's a fine line between watching this movie with your daughter and her watching it with her friends." Went on and on about it.

Don't know if this movie will hold up to repeat viewings but I'm glad I watched it in the theater.

Last 2 Xmen movies have been really good. Last wolverine movie was decent. Haven't seen it yet, but all signs point to deadpool being good. Why do you have so little faith in fox?

Because they just screwed it up majorly with Fantastic Four last summer.

It's bizarre how despite Deadpool's lower budget, it looks better than Apocalypse. It's not even that I don't trust Bryan Singer with CGI. Days of Future Past looked excellent and grounded. Something most Marvel movies can't seem to achieve.

Fox is honestly just all over the place. Hope X-Men Apocalypse and Wolverine 3 are good movies.

Best wishes.

This is good to hear, hopefully it'll show Marvel that they can do some R rated stuff. Lets have that Wolverine movie now.

We have seen a grand total of 2 minutes of X-Men:A. The outside effects don't look great, but people on NeoGAF were saying, literally, the exact same thing before DOFP. Have a little faith in the team that has delivered 4 good Xmen movies.

Most of deadpool seems to takes place on a bridge. Also aside from colossus and warhead, there isn't much vfx.

Apocalypse has like 10 mutants. And probably takes place in two or more locations. So apples to oranges.

Deadpool is likely to hit double the studios projections for the weekend. Ryan Reynolds has to be over the moon right now. He finally did it.
