Mario Kart Switch: all Wii U + new tracks, characters, battle mode, < 3 mos fr launch

I can definitely see the Splatoon Inklings making their way into this game with a splatoon track, also even a variant on the squid attack weapon where it sprays multicolored ink on the screen.

Dude.. I had no idea how much I wanted this until now...

I think they should just go all out and include all (well most) of the 3d tracks they ever made for MK plus a few new ones.

Call it the Mario Kart collection or whatever.

I had the idea of them including every single Mario Kart course (whether at launch or via DLC) and calling it "Mario Kart Infinity". Maybe that's a pipe dream but it would be fun.

So it's true. Nearly 3 years after MK8 launch, the only thing Nintendo has to offer is a port with updated DLC content. Wtf.

I mean, to be fair, MK8 is the first HD Mario Kart game, it has 48 courses, and they all look like they were no joke at all to make. Building on its foundation seems understandable - starting from scratch and throwing all of that out on a dead console would have been a waste.

Yes, that's the only thing they did in those 3 years.

There's a team dedicated to Mario Kart yeah. Usually, they put out a new game in 3 years. What they put here in 3 years is an upport.
MKDS: 2006 -> MKWii: 2009 -> MK3DS: 2011 -> MK8: 2014 -> MK8+: 2017

MK8 has 48 tracks? Holy shit.

Yeah, 32 + 16 DLC courses.

The article flat out says even more new levels, characters, and a real battle mode.

3 years later or not, but this seems moe like the OG games, its DLC, and a hefty expansion pack; hardly offensive.

Which is what they did with DLC content. Basically, they'll rerelease MK8 but with all the DLC content included and new DLC content included.

you need to wake up

Why ? It's basically what they're planning according to the blog post. Releasing MK8 with more content. Said content could've been DLC too.

Sure but the same could be said of all DLCs.

So new tracks, characters, and new Battle mode, plus all the content that came to the Wii U.
Nintendo should just call this MK9. I mean it sounds like a sequel.

What lacks from that list to me:

_New modes (maybe the battle one ?) that uses the fact that you can play multi everywhere
_Betta graphics!

Mario Kart 8 was an ongoing project, 16 news tracks were developed. It might be a little early to judge what Mario Kart Switch is but this report makes it sound like a pretty great package.

It is more like tow year because they spent some time doing MK8 DLC for a year. Also, the dedicated Mario Kart team also gets support from Nintendo's other studios; I believe Retro Studios put in heavy work on MK7 for 3DS.

i hope that either fire hopping is gone from all speed classes or that there's 200cc Time Trial (fire hopping doesn't work in 200cc)

How do you know that is the only thing they have been working on these past 3 years? Maybe the "Mario Kart team" actually was able to work on something different than a Mario Kart game. You literally know nothing.

I think it's just better to call it "MK8.5" because that's what it really is.

Everything is exactly the same as MK8 except for King Boo and the double item system.

Would be great if this got a bump to 1080p and had the slight frame stuttering removed, the assets would love so good at a higher res!

Though I hope there aren't issues with finding people on 150cc online like there were with the Wii U one, once my score got to a certain point I could never come across anyone...

They did 16 dlc courses after the launch in 2014. You have no idea if they reduced team size or the scope of this project.

Well I remember MK8 used the MK7 UI during the E3 demo, but yeah this is more of an enhanced port. Then again, MK7 wasn't really a big leap from MKW, it was mainly just the flying/underwater sections.

I was never a big fan of battle mode (always preferred racing) but if the amount of new content seems pretty good.

Huh. If true, glad I held off on buying the Wii U version.

Wonder if Switch games will recognize Wiimotes for simple multiplayer like split screen Mario Kart battle mode.

EDIT: Would also be nice if they make drop-in local multiplayer easier, especially given the portable nature of the system.

Trying to organize a bunch of drunk people to select their characters, carts, wheels, glider, game mode, and stage, and then do it all over again after one race because there's no way to do just one race on one course, is a bit of a headache.

Also wonder if they'd allow more than 4 players since you can just bring multiple consoles for local play..

It's interesting, for other sports or racing games this would define a sequel. Same premise, new stuff. For Mario Kart however there seem to be clear differences between each entry and this may be the first one to break that tradition. By normal means though new tracks, characters and modes would define a kart racing sequel.

MK8 got DLC and other updates for a year so the comparison is off. Development time of HD titles is also not comparable to handheld titles (so no completely new console game less than 3 years after the last console game).
And you don't even know how much new content there will be in the MK8 port.

If those new characters don't include veterans like Diddy and Birdo imma be pissed. But having Kind Boo means we might get all the great old characters back, maybe even Petey.

I'm not sure I would expect more than at most 8 new tracks. The game will already have all 48 MK 8 tracks as it is.

The DLC packs alone were 16 new tracks, so I don't think it's a tall ask considering how long its been since the last DLC pack was released.

Nintendo must know that early Switch adopters will likely be Wii U owners and Mario Kart 8 had a pretty high adaption rate.

Mario Kart 7 was seen as a rush barebones release but at least at the bare minimum it delivered a complete package.

Hope Xenoblade and Bayo 2 get the same treatment.

The only Wii U games that I see getting ports are the ones with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer/online, like the ones already known about (including Mario Maker). I don't think Nintendo will bother with the more single player focused games like 3D World, Xenoblade X or Star Fox.

Yes, so as I said, MK8 + old DLC + new DLC. As someone who already played MK8, that's disappointing that 3 years later, we get a MK8 port.

I don't know for sure, I'm commenting what we learn from the thread.

I have no idea indeed. All I see for now is that they plan to rerelease MK8. So unless they come up with a HUGE new content, which would be like doubling the size of the game (so 96 tracks), it's hard to give them props content wise.

There would need to be a considerable amount of new tracks for this to be worth picking up, if you already own the Wii U version, for this to be worth it. Even more so if you bought the DLC.

For Wii U owners it feels like the first year of the Switch might be a hard sell.

Hope Xenoblade and Bayo 2 get the same treatment.

Wouldn't be surprised if half of Monolith Soft is reusing planet Mira from Xenoblade Chronicles X to make a sequel and the other half is working on a new game. Part of Monolith Soft is currently working on Breath of the Wild.

So through DLC we saw Link, Villager, and Isabel added to the roster. What other Nintendo characters do you think will be in this game at launch?

Think we will see Pikachu?

I think Kirby and a Kirby track would be pretty welcome.
And I guess they could put some more FZero tracks and Falcon, if he doesn't look too weird in a kart.

If they could make 12 new original tracks, a few more guest tracks and a requested remake or two like Wario Coliseum it would be a good mix, especially for those who haven't played the dlc.

Sounds good. Much like game as service too.

We can safely guess:
- New amiibos outfits;
- More DLC packs coming;

Can it reach 100 tracks when everything will be said and done?

Feeling like I should sell my Wii U copy as I never bought the DLC and this is a pseudo-GOTY edition.

Number one request is anti-aliasing. Or 1080p. Or both.

That doesn't mean anything tbh. It was just an introduction video to the Switch. They show the basic UI's from Mario Kart 8. They could easily change up the UI's and menus to give it a different feel from Mario Kart 8 so people who bought Mario Kart 8 will feel like they're almost getting a Mario Kart 9.

Awesome. Hopefully this turns out to be true, but seeing as this is Arcadegirl aka Emily Rogers, I think it's safe to say that it will.

Yeah, but what they showed in the trailer was a retro track, and every MK since MKDS has had those. And graphically I don't think its a big deal if they kept MK8's art style since it still looks really good.

They are changing the item system, adding new tracks and characters, and adding a new battle mode. I feel like they are underselling this game if they just call it an enhanced port. Same with Splatoon, and that game actually looks different compared to the one on Wii U.

I get where you're coming from but what would a sequel be? I mean they could make a new engine and remake all the assets but I think we would pretty much end up with Mario Kart 8+ anyway. I agree though I would prefer a new game built from the ground up.

MK8 art style isn't the problem. But I think it's reasonable for anyone to hope for higher poly models, better lighting and effets or even new textures.

Better graphics and new content/balance. Sure we'd end up with Mario Kart 8+ but it'd still feel like a new episode. Some genre are limited in term of evolution. But they also try to update things in term of physics, tech or content.
As I said, unless they provide double the content or nearly 96 tracks, it'd be hard to applaud this considering the time between the two.
