I'm aware of her but I can't name any of her songs. This seems like very smart marketing on SE's part, though. I will still probably never play this game, and had honestly forgotten that it existed. Also, I like her character sprites.

She makes music that I'd never listen to even if I would get paid for it but you cannot deny that she's one of the most popular pop stars at the moment. 30 million streams per month on Spotify, almost 93 million Instagram followers, lots of her music videos on YouTube hover around the 500 million views mark. She's not unknown.

The ubiquity of popular culture was struck with a fairly heavy blow with the rise of the internet. The notion of a star is not what it once was. Just because people don't know someone who is on heavy rotation on the radio/network TV does not mean they are trying to be edgy. We are not living in the age of Michael Jackson and Madonna anymore.
I knew there was a person named Ariana Grande, for instance, but had no idea who or what she was.
