Crystal Dynamics is working with The Initiative on Perfect Dark

naughty dog did this multiple times and you have like most of the time no idea of what u talk about just spreading fud and hate on Xbox like always
Sounds like this touches a nerve for you for some reason.

To me this presents like a sign of weakness, disfunctionality & and a project off the rails. I'm sure this is the more common impression because you can wear any hat and apply it to any studio and that's what comes to mind first.

12 of those 14 were for art outsourcing.

The other 2 were for voice over editing / mixing.

They didn't just hire Crystal Dynamics to make their game for them lol.

My take: good, I liked the TB reboot, the history was bad but graphics and animations were top notch, more people working on the game the better, for me, the player, doesn't matter who made the game as long as it's fun

Nice logic.
Polyphony Digital uses outsourcing to make Gran Turismo games. So Ember Labs > Polyphony Digital, eh? Polyphony can't make a game?
Polyphone is a disgrace in terms of productivity. They need to improve significantly.

I strongly suspect Perfect Dark's scope is much more grand than Kena.
Of course. We're talking about 4-5x bigger scope at best, right? Kena was made with 12 developers. The Initiative has 70 developers, so almost 6x the size of Ember Labs.

Sucker Punch has 160 developers. 100-ish is quite the understatement.
They now have 160 developers. For the majority of Ghost of Tsushima's development, they were a <100 studio.
Insomniac has 400+ developers. You think they chained away 150 of them only to work on Spiderman?
Again, they now have 400 developers. They grew when they were making Miles Morales (with the introduction of a third team) and just overall after Sony's acquisition.

At the time of Spider-Man, there had < 250 employees. ~100 of them were working on Ratchet & Clank, and <150 were working on Spider-Man.

Actually several of the studios you mentioned outsourced work, including Ember Labs. The issue isn't there, and there really isn't any issue at all, other than an uncommon move which is for a First Party studio to co-develop a First Party Title. This is not outsourcing.
I agree. This is exactly what I am saying, too.

1. This is not a big deal for gamers, as long as the game is good -- except that it doesn't look good on paper for MS that their premier new studio couldn't make a game on its own.
2. Most studios do outsourcing (though, co-development b/w first-party and third-party is extremely rare)
3. This is co-development, not outsourcing.

Again, whatever it takes to make a good game, it's fine.

The issue is not the outsourcing (or which studio helps out, every studio does it from Turn10, PD, Ubisoft etc.), but the BS they have been proclaiming since 2018. Them stating years ago "we are working on something groundbreaking, worthy of AAAA" moniker was complete bullcrap.
The mandate was to create a new IP (Perfect Dark is not new) and to innovate ... (not sure how, FPS have been stagnant for decades), but after 3 years, they are still in early development ("have to wait another 2 years+")?

That is to some extent concerning.
"That's really the mandate: make something ground-breaking. Innovate," continued Gallagher, who used to oversee the Tomb Raider franchise as studio head of Crystal Dynamics.

A job listing from 2018 that looks like it could be for the southern California studio asked for experience in shipping titles at "AAAA standards" and a knowledge of "building new IP."

This is good news for Perfect dark, the initiative by themselves are a small team.

69 peeps, small ... but not that small. Enough to accomplish something in 3 years.

How does working with an external studio mean they aren't trying to make something groundbreaking?
There's such a dearth of common sense in this thread.

Those people aren't all employed at Naughty Dog, of course, but involve workers at 14 other studios outsourcing certain work. That includes two studios brought in to help with sound--one for general sounds and one specifically for weaponry and combat--and the remaining 12 external studios helping with the game's art in various forms.

Last I checked, you can't make a game without art and audio.
12 studios worth of art and 2 of audio is a ludicrous amount of important work outsourced..every bit as important as programming.

Also Perfect Dark has had a playable build since February of last year.
CD are obviously hired to help build out what's already there and make sure it ships when they want it to.

With a budget like The Initiative has, why not hire a large, experienced AAA team that Daryl Gallagher has already led to great success before?

Problem is even if Sony outsources their games, they are still good and bangers, anytime MS lately has outsourced a game it turned into a train wreck like crackdown 3, state of decay 2 etc.

whenever we get these buzz words from MS it slights me as not god because their track record has been abysmal
State of Decay 2 was not outsourced. Lmao. What are you on?

Off the rails? They were always going to outsource. lmao. That's how they were set up from the scratch.

How do you know what they've accomplished at this point?

Game is not being outsourced, it will be a Crystal Dynamic game in partnership with the Initiative.

All the leads on the game will probably be The Initiative employees, basing this off the employee titles that the initiative are hiring for.

I don't know how I would word that.

Imran Khan did suggest the same thing but I suspect square enix will keep the western studios sadly and constantly be unhappy with their performance.
I don't think Squeenix will sell CD, they have MSFT by the teet.
Will be highly lucrative to be saving premier XBox studios from embarrassment.

Crystal Dynamics was already on a support role for the last Tomb Raider (Shadow) which was developed by Eidos-Montreal. And that's my favorite Tomb Raider of the trilogy. That game has the best Tombs puzzles ever.

So I hope the next Tomb Raider will also be done by Eidos-Montreal (and not Crystal Dynamics as their last Tomb Raider, Rise, was the worse of the trilogy for me with way too much shooting).

So, pls would somebody confirm if the game will be 3rd Person or 1st Person? I thought they Announced it as a 3rd Person Action Game.

It was announced as 1st person from the start.
From the official site Perfect Dark | Xbox:
  • Genre
  • Action/Adventure
  • First-person Shooter

Ken Lobb said years ago in an interview that PD could potentially come back as a 3rd person game. That's probably why many people are confused.

I think people here making up stupid reasons on this need to relax. Im fairly certain the initiative was alway meant to be an idea factory. They go the extra step of full game design, fully playable vertical slice of all levels and set up everything needed for full development using unreal, then hand it off to a studio to complete while working on the next game.

This might also be more about creating in game cinematics and less about actual dev work then we know.

I knew one person that was on a year long contract there. I was surprised it was short but they enjoyed time there.

Yep, the 3rd person comment was perpetuated often. Even when they were play testing in 2019. It could be that it changed though because reading between the lines it seems like they might have changed a lot after that playtest.

Eidos montreal is working on guardians of the galaxy. I doubt they will handle TR

just to let some people understand and close this stupid "bad" false narrative

Certain affinity (ex-bungie people's) a 250+ people studio
is helping Halo Infinite studio (which is already huge) with the game with an official collaboration

"Certain Affinity Reveals Ongoing Partnership with 343 Industries on Halo Infinite"

do you understand how out of touch these speeches are? if you have a lot of money like budget for halo you can afford internal studios of 250+ people to help just that instead of outsourcing out of respect you call partnership or collaboration.

"The project isn't in trouble! Look, it's just like Halo Infinite!"

Roughly 3 years. They released Uncharted in 2016 and Lost Legacy in 2017 (which had the whole studio working on it, officially confirmed).

So from Summer 2017 to release in Summer 2020.

Last of us was in development at same time as uncharted 4. They had certain people split once art/story department was done they started with Neil on early concept for characters, location.
