Doctor Who 50th Anniversary |OT| Splendid Chap, All Of Them

Completely skipping all theatrical presentations. Inviting about 10 friends over, all Doctor Who fans. We're going to kill all the lights, fire up the projector, and watch it there. Probably preceded by some classic episodes and the Adventures in Space and Time special.

Less money. More beer. No 3D.

I wish Eccleston wasn't such a git. (Is that a word? I'm American. We don't use that word here. Fake Edit: Googled it. Yep it is. Exactly the word I need.)

I mean I loved his Doctor. He was my first. But because of his childishness Tennant took over that role. Which I love because Tennant is great. But Eccleston was really good and I can't believe the bad blood there.

50th just won't be the same without him.

I need to know how long that Minisode is. How long are they normally? 2-3 minutes tops?

Can I get closer to 5-10?

CAN I GET MCGANN, PLEASE?

The so far accurate poster mentioned above says it's not 10 minutes, so I guess it's less than that, and is certain Mcgann is in it.

Does he say if Hurt is in it?

Not directly but I assume so since he says the minisode is a regeneration:

minisodes is a big yes

will we see a regeneration in november AND december? ;)

Also going through his post history I just saw this which I hadn't seen before:

certain announcements and things such as Davison doing the 'protest filming' were deliberate to stop people finding out about the extra minisode filming :)

Interesting.

What has he been accurate about before?

New opening titles for The Snowmen, he was also the first to mention the trailer coming on after Strictly before it was announced. Not big things but it's safe to say he's been reliable so far. He also mentioned another trailer that was meant to come out but never did, but apparantly it was put out to catch people who'd been leaking stuff. But the trailer on the 9th, minisode and google homepage stuff he is sure on, and so are some other people about the minisode but I don't know how reliable they are. We'll find out soon enough.

Hopefully we'll get some new opening titles for the 50th. I can't stand these ones.

God, yes. It broke my heart to see the beautiful Framestore titles mangled by the production team (remember the "Instagrammed" versions in season 7A?) and then finally replaced with that patchwork mess for 7B.

I really like the current titles. Feel very classic Who. I love that it's got the red/blue time vortex back, but has bits in space as well.. and I love how the classic Hartnell vortex appears in that bubble right at the start. They sort of feel designed for the 50th, really. Sort of a mix of the various styles.

Was never really a fan of the cloudy series 5 one, though I did like the lightning hitting the TARDIS.

The main issue I have with the current sequence is how flat the whole thing is. Not flat as in unexciting, but literally flat - as someone whole employs the same tricks (layering 2D objects to give the illusion of 3D) on a semi-regular basis, I can't help noticing what a technical step backwards it is from the fully-rendered beauty of the Framestore sequence.

And don't even get me started on what they've done with the logo. It has a drop-shadow for christ's sake.

I do quite like the bit where the title of the episode comes up, though.

That's fair enough. I can see how it's quite flat. It'll be interesting to see how it's converted to 3D for the anniversary, as I assume it'll largely be unedited - apart from squeezing the second largest number of names since the show's return into it, assuming Tennant, Piper and Hurt all make it into the titles... which I'm guessing they will. I suspect the flatness was down to what Moffat likely specced. He said in DWM he was getting bored of the titles halfway through series 6, and wanted to see if they could be made more modular so they could be more easily changed (again, the awful Instagram-style effects were a part of this) - so I imagine the flat design is so that if they want to change elements they don't have to re-render the entire thing.

I just like it tonally. Like, the RTD-era titles were a throwback to the first-through-third Doctor title sequences, which were all about the time vortex. 4-8 were all about space. The early Eleventh Doctor ones are weird, as they're sort of neither; the vortex had never (before that) been described like it appears there, but we can assume it is the vortex as it is shown once or twice in the show when the TARDIS is travelling. It's weird. In a sense, though, it also fits Smith's fairytale Doctor brilliantly.

I like this one because you have space, then it transfers into a very natural evolution of the RTD-era vortex - sort of covers both sides. That's why it feels like a very 50th, mix-and-match approach to me.

I like that the face of the Doctor is back in the opening. That has been sorely missing for years.

I didn't dislike the way they did it, but I feel like there must be a more interesting way to show it, besides having it just drifting in space.

That's a good point, actually. Thinking about it, they might actually be forced to build something new for the anniversary given that it's going out in 3D - I'm not certain, but I get the feeling that displaying the current sequence in 3D would give the game away re: the flat elements it looks to be constructed from.

I don't really disagree with any of that, and I'm at peace with the fact that a lot of my criticisms stem from a deeply nerdy interest in VFX that most people aren't afflicted with. In any case, the best part about Doctor Who is that it changes so frequently that you rarely have to wait more than a few years before you get something that suits your tastes.

San Diego seems to be a backwater town for the theater screenings, only happening on the 25th. Still most likely going, but it's kinda lame that I'll have already seen it.

Though seeing as the S5 titles were only commissioned around 3 weeks before broadcast, I wonder if it'll be one of those details left near the end, they'll have hit near the end and just 3D the current ones and it'll have the described drawback - not making a new one as they're still quite recent anyway.

Could definitely go that way. The thinking is that the current sequence didn't break the bank as it was, and they'd probably be happy to save further money for the rest of the production.

They will. I was talking to Jon Gransden (one of the master title sequence creators on YouTube) and he said they will have to create a new sequence. He didn't get into it, since i'm only an beginner at visual effects and i probably wouldn't understand.

Here's a pretty good video where he describes why they suck.

And as great as neon visuals stuff is, he has a fucking ego that would rival some of the biggest elitists on gaming side. I really don't like him as a person.

I like the idea of the new OP (it has bits and pieces of the old and new openings, face and all), but as they said, its badly executed. Worst for me though is the music. less than 35 seconds? really? It just stops abruptly with the episode title. I know side B nearly never appears in the OP (and thats one of the parts that I most love about the theme) but they can't even finish the short track now. My favourite one is the series 4, longest and I love that theme's version, and I like the font and how the names of the actors appear (I hate the font of the new one), still the Doctor Who surfboard logo is horrible and thank god they ditched it.

I know its probably impossible, but I love the just gave money to neon Visual, and let him do the opening, because they are great. The capaldi one he has done is amazing.

I would love if we have something spectacular for the 50th, with a new long version of the theme, would be great if they do something like in the trailer they just released.

Im of the same opinion, I loved him as the Doctor, but every time he opens his mouth in real life (or doesnt want to open it), he seem more selfish. I suppose he had a rough time when he was there, but with a show as important on tv history as doctor who he needs to reconsider things, not for himself, but for the fans.

My aunt came in from Manchester on Thursday and brought The Doctor: His Lives and Times from BBC books. Apparently it's comparable to the Brilliant Books (never owned those).

It contains little, never before seen, in fiction items for each Doctor. There is a little snipet with Dr. Song interviewing Tegan that I found hilarious as well as the Doctor's report card.

Also, there are plenty of quotes from the production staff from each era that give a little more insight into the development of the character through the decades. Leads right up to The Name of the Doctor. Even has a photo of the new Zygon in it.

K, that's pretty fucking sick.

I also think the RTD-era one is the 'best' but is marred by an awful logo treatment. No idea what the thought process was with that. RTD himself even admitted he didn't really like it, but didn't want to change it more than they did (adding the flames from Series 3 onwards) because of the nightmare it'd cause in terms of branding, toys, etc.

I really like the current iteration of the theme, though. Glad Gold pulled it back a bit. I imagine the abruptness is due to the BBC. They already make them cut the credits to be fuck all, which is why we haven't had the Middle 8 since Series 4 (excluding The Beast Below, which had the theme extend over the next time trailer, thus allowing it. I wonder if Gold even bothered arranging the middle 8 for the 7b theme.

Yeah, I dont know who designed the surboard logo, but its good that RTD thought also the logo was horrible. The one I most like is the 50th anniversary they are using in merchandising, with the finger print, I think is the most classy of them all, while still retaining the Doctor Who spirit (that and the one they usually use now where the Tardis is in the logo).

And its funny they cut also the long version for the credits, making the credits go so fast is even impossible to know who worked on the episode (reminds me of the simpsons episode where Bart works at the Krusty show and the credits go so fast his name is impossible to read).

The middle 8 is so fantastic that makes me sad everytime is cut from the main theme. :(
Hope is present at least on the 50th anniversary.

I actually love the opening remix from the McGann film.

And that fan one for 12 is great, though I don't know if I want the floating Doctor faces back. It's the one thing I don't' like about the current opening.

I like the 7b title sequence for the most part. The one thing I dislike is how the TARDIS ends up cleanly on the screen and the door opening. Half-assed, I think.

Neon Visual did a better job on the intro (note the TARDIS!), but I do think it just needs a bit more refinement. It looks too "fan made" for my liking. I don't know how I can explain that, but it bugs me a little.

That said, I do love the previews he came out with for his own version of The Day of the Doctor's titles (note the floating heads!).

News from today that'll potentially have a knock-on for Who fans:

Tory Minister warns BBC to change or prepare for licence fee cut

Grant Shapps, the Conservative Party Chairman and minister without portfolio, told the Sunday Telegraph that there were “lots of different ways” the public could receive public service broadcasting in exchange for a licence fee which, at £145.50 each year from every household with a TV, he described as “quite a lot to pay”.

The BBC’s royal charter comes up for renewal in 2016, and Mr Shapps suggested that the corporation needed to be subject to the same scrutiny as other public bodies or risk having its £3.6 billion income from the fee cut – or split with other organisations.

He said that the recent scandals involving high-profile BBC presenters and pay-offs for senior executives had raised a “question of credibility” over decisions at all levels of the corporation.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...e-or-prepare-for-licence-fee-cut-8907211.html

Start hoping the Tories don't win the next election, Who fans!

This is why BBC Worldwide should take over Who. Just in case.
Fuck that. I'd rather see Who taken off the air than see the BBC be thrown under the bus for it.
In this particular instance, though, his bitching aligns with the general interests of the party - gutting as much of the BBC as they can get away with and handing massive market advantage to Murdoch.
That's a busted flush by this point. Yes, there are many Tories who'd love to hand every contract going to Murdoch, but phone hacking and incoming press regulation has absolutely scuppered that heading forwards. There's sabre-rattling about the BBC, sure, but most Tories with half a brain in their heads (ie not Shapps) will not be pressing the point now of all times.

From BlogtorWho:

The BBC have released some details regarding this year's annual Children In Need appeal. The charity night, which has a had a long association with Doctor Who, will feature the show "lending a hand" to the evening's proceedings. In the past special scenes have been screened, such as Time Crash in 2007, and actors have appeared live on the evening itself, such as David Tennant. Full details will be published soon.

This year's Children In Need takes place on Friday Nov 15.

Expected, I guess they'll show Davison's film.

Also some people are saying the trailer is coming on the 2nd now with pictures to be released later this week. And the McGann minisode insider is supposedly seeing an unfinished version of it tomorrow. If we do get a trailer on the 2nd I wonder if the minisode will get pushed forward from the rumored 16th as well.

Oh, that would make my Christmas.

Also, happy 31st birthday Matt Smith!

Hopefully. Still wanna know how long that minisode is going to be.

You think the theatrical version of Day of the Doctor might have this minisode edited into it?

I thought that at first, since different cinemas were listing longer times than 75 minutes, but they're showing a 10 minute behind the scenes thing afterwards. I have no idea really, there are rumors it'll slot into the episode itself, maybe pre-opening titles? Of course, it could all be a load of rubbish and he's having us on but I doubt that now.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering - it seems a lot of people were suggesting that the making-of would be stuck at the back or front of the episode proper, and that would account for the 10min time difference.

But I'd rather it was this minisode + end credits making up the time difference.

I always expect the worst so as not to be disappointed. I still remember when Eccleston rumors were a faint possibility.

That said, I can't believe they'd get McGann into a studio to record faint echoes of Matt Smith dialogue that only the intrepid would bother to hear.
