Not me though, it doesnt sort anything other than hinders the development of further stories, when they have to address it. I say just give him unlimited generations and be done with it. We all know already it's gonna be more than 13, they are not going to end the series just because of the limit.

Considering that Moffat seems to be deliberately trying to manoeuvre Smith into being the thirteenth regeneration, I'd be pretty damned shocked. Seems to me that he's trying to make a story out of it.

I'm not that convinced he wants Smith to be 13. I do think he wants him to be 12 though, because I think he wants to do the Valeyard.

Wait, was that supposed to be a young Hurt Doctor (I guess War Doctor) in the reflection? I was expecting John Hurt and boom they get this other guy's face. Does that mean he's supposed to age or whatever?

"I'm a doctor. But probably not the one you were expecting."

ha, that was great. And wonderful work from McGann too, especially given how short this thing is. He just sank right back into the role.

That's what I got out of it. Would suggest he has been Hurt/War Doctor for quite some time.

Yep, that was young John Hurt, so I'm guessing by Day of the Doctor he's been fighting the time war for a loooooong time.

Moffat already said we should recount the regenerations though. This one plus Tennant's first would make Smith the 13th.

How long then? I'm still a bit fuzzy on how Timelord aging works. I mean, we got the first doctor presumably growing from a young boy to an old man and David Tennant being rapidly aged by the Master, but then you get Matt Smith gallavanting for 200 years and looking exactly the same.

He's said before that he doesn't really like or understand the Valeyard, and just threw him in for flavouring for The Great Intelligence's rant.

He might be lying, but I hope he isn't. No Valeyard ever, please.

Regarding regenerations and their limits:

We know that the Time Lords can give hand out additional sets of regenerations, as they did for The Master if I'm not mistaken.

As I'm not up-to-date with the latest spoilers, from what I gathered the Time Lords *may* be coming back from the Time War - if the leaked spoilers are believed to be true. If that's the case, then perhaps they will honor the Doctor with an additional set of regenerations as well for rewriting history.

I dunno, I'm guessing it'll be explained by timey wimey magic (ie. Matt didn't age during his 200yr goodbye tour as he was constantly traveling through time and the Tardis protects him from the effects of time. Perhaps Hurt spent a large portion of his life in linear time, hence the ageing)

Wow. That wasn't only fanwanky in the best possible way, it was actually a really well acted/directed/written piece for a 6 minute thing. I mean, within two minutes you knew just how bad the Time War actually was. And the name checking of his companions is so sweet.

Also you could tell McGann loved doing this, he sank back into the role so easily.

I'm wondering how this fits in to the whole 12 regenerations thing though. I wasn't imagining that Moffat said he'd address it somehow right? And now the Doctor died, came back to life, and then 'drank' some new regenerations. Oh wait...potions! Damn you Moffat!

Invoking the Sisterhood of Karn from the Baker era Brain of Morbius story (One of my all time favorites) was actually pretty genius. Loved it. That was some of the best Who I've seen in years.

Maybe the Dream Lord is the Valeyard? If Matt is the 13th, and the Valeyard pops up between 12 and 13, then maybe the Dream Lord was created during Tennant/Smith's regeneration in the TARDIS - fulfilling all of the requisite numbering.

So wonderful to see McGann again, but amazing as it would be, I wouldn't be too optimistic about getting Eccleston back, not because Moffat doesn't want him but because Eccleston himself still seems somewhat antagonistic towards the show, refusing to talk about it in interviews and, on the rare occasion he does, says he doesn't watch the show. Unless Moffat could offer him 'pay the bills' money (unlikely, as we know the 50th anniversary episode's budget is no greater than the average Christmas special), I doubt Eccles would return after a bad experience just for the sake of the fans.

I'd be happy with just some stock footage of him at this point.

McGann and I share a bday! Woot! Awesome Who birthday presents for me!

I wonder if his birthday had anything to do with choosing to drop the video today....

Probably just a happy coincidence. "OH, your bday is in november? Hmm...I have an idea."

That...kinda makes sense?

I always wondered about that 200yr comment. Since
it was really the Teselecta
, does the 200yr statement still apply to the Doctor, or it? Was River noting the age difference of the Doctor, or was she actually (inadvertently?) analyzing the age of that ship?

I'm sure it was the age of the Doctor, didn't the Doctor switch places with the Tesselecta at the end of his goodbye tour, not the beginning..? Been a while since I saw the episode, perhaps I forgot.

Or he could've just been lying. He does that now and again.

I've always thought the Doctor visibly aging is just down to his personal choice. During the Time War I doubt he really cared how he looked, and just let time ravage him (not that Hurt looks terrible or anything). Whereas the other Doctors enjoy looking (comparatively) youthful, and being an almost timeless figure.

Or, ya know, something something regeneration energy.

I always get worried about these Doctor Who specials due to their inconsistent quality, but this mini-episode was fantastically acted and extremely interesting.

I loved the fact that the Time Lords (and The Doctor) aren't seen as gallant galaxy defenders that can pick up naive companions, but as the bringers of death and misery who will ultimately destroy the galaxy with their maniacal conflict with the Daleks. It brings a darkness to the show that doesn't necessarily destroy the angelic portrayal of the doctor, but instead grounds those around him with a healthy dose of cynicism that has been missing recently.

Eh I have always thought that the Valeyard was an artificial "incarnation" of the Doctor created by the Timelords out of The Doctor's dark side or whatever he was made out off, specifically for the trial. It's why I have never really cared about his origins. Dreamlord as the Valeyard doesn't sound too bad tho.

McGann! What a fantastic thing to wake up to! The only disappointment was the lack of his new sonic the had made, but that was expected. Still!

The recent advert that goes through the Doctors has smith saying he's been running for over 900 years, so I would assume that second age isn't the real one and he is just 900 something.

That was so incredibly good. I have warm happy thoughts all over. Everyone loves Mcgann and he's been such a sweet guy to Who fandom it was really tremendous seeing him in the role again. I'd really truly love a live action series with him. He did the movie in 1996 and he still looks young enough to run around and be The Doctor.

Also best line: "Phsycian, heal thyself."

He could also do a cross-over episode with Peter Capaldi now that the possibility is open.

I've been avoiding this thread for fear of spoilers so I didn't know this was out right away but OMG I SCREAMED.

AHHHH.

Someone hold me, I can't.

Anyone know why Eccleston feels that way? I don't know anything about this "bad experience" he had. I'd really love to see him come back at least for one episode.

I'm sure it was the age of the Doctor, didn't the Doctor switch places with the Tesselecta at the end of his goodbye tour, not the beginning..? Been a while since I saw the episode, perhaps I forgot.

I think that's the issue, because we're to conclude that the Doctor on the beach was always the Teselecta, so therefore anything River says about the age would have to refer to the Teselecta, not the actual Doctor. She mentions "this Doctor" (their Doctor, the one with the special, fizzy straw lol) being 200 years younger than the one they just saw at the beach, about 15 minutes into Impossible Astronaut.

So this gets me thinking. Let's assume there's no 200-year age difference, that the Doctor on the beach is only marginally older than the fizzy straw Doctor in the diner, and that it's linear aging, the entire time. No wibbly wobbly timey wimey TARDIS magic.

Given what transpired in Night of the Doctor, we're left with only one explanation:
the Hurt/War Doctor has gotten the utter shit beaten out of him during the Time War. Sounds like the war was raging for quite a while prior to NiotD, and they made a special point to show a very young version of Hurt in the reflection, so...figure he'll have been fighting this thing for a couple of decades, at least?

Funny how the Big Finish companions were mentioned but not Grace and the Asian kid (sorry, don't remember his name at the moment)?

He only knew them during the very beginning of his life, and Chang Lee set out to murder him most of the time. There is some debate as to whether or not Grace was a companion too, because she only had that one appearance.

It also might be due to Fox actually owning all original characters from the TV Movie. The actors that played Grace and Chang actually appeared in some Big Finish stories, but not as their 8th Doctor movie characters. I don't think the actor for Chang is even in an 8th Doctor story.

Been staying out of this thread because I don't want any inadvertent spoilers, but "Night of the Doctor" was fucking amazing. I clicked a Twitter link for it without having looked at anything else today and my jaw dropped when I heard McGann's voice. And bringing back the Sisterhood, another nice nod. Just great.
