Doom: The Dark Ages - 3 Million Players Already - 7x Faster than Doom: Eternal

"7x faster" is such a strange way to quantify this. I guess Eternal sold 3 million copies by day 35 (if you call it 5 days since release) or day 49 (if you include the extra 2 days of early access).

I did my part, I played like 2 levels via Gampeass

I dunno guys, these gaslight brags are starting to get to me. Whey the fuck are they even talking about...

I guess they know the appearance of a successful game means more players will come and also that your boss might be happy with you.

....but don't you feel bad for being a blatant spin artist? Can we get a no spin room in gaming? I'm not built to get gaslighted by everyone at all times.

"x amount of players" is such a vague and bizarre metric that it just makes the whole thing seem desperate and pathetic.

"Wow 3 million players" what the fuck does that even mean

Excellent! Now I want to know how many bullets were shot! How many demons were kersplatted!

These... are... real.... metrics!

We are modern people and demand modern metrics.

Sales is a dirty four letter word you boomer fucks! (Not you boomer shooter fucks, you guys are cool)

Doom Eternal didn't launch on gamepass so it's Steam numbers will naturally be higher.

3 million accounts across all platforms they track have either purchased or downloaded the game. They can't say "3 million units sold" because people on Gamepass playing the game didn't technically purchase a copy, they just downloaded it.

Doesn't mean all 3 million are actively playing the game or have played more than 2 levels like HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 . Just means 3 million licenses for the game are associated with 3 million player accounts.

I expected less complaining about engagement now that PS will focus on it.

We are not there yet.
Mate, the problem isn't the metrics themselves, its that the metrics are not standardized.

In order for a comparison to be valid there needs to be some standardization.

If we aren't comparing apples to apples then the numbers provided actually don't tell us anything.

This is not scientific data, yet.

I hope this specific game does well, I really do, but this gaslighting with the data, it's a problem that is getting worse.

Exactly at the moment when marketing starts using veiled terms and expressions, and not simple phrases like - "Sold so many copies in so many days." This is the first sign that everything is not as good as they would like.

What does it mean? That at this point of its lifecycle eternal had only 400k players? I kinda doubt that with it has steam 100+k CCU on launch day

How many more games will it take to prove that good games, or games with big hype will sell on steam regardless of gamepass?

Most recent example expedition 33. Oldest example i can think of? Sea of thieves. Not only was it on gamepass, it was on gamepass for TWO YEARS before it came to steam, still did more than twice the steam numbers of doom

Guess what - it means 3 million different players have played the game.

Either by buying the game and playing it (to completion or not) or by downloading it on Gamepass and playing it (to completion or not).

It's not rocket science.

Beats me why people are still questioning the metric in every single game thread, feigning ignorance. We all know sales figures themselves are now pretty much meaningless for any game on Gamepass.

This claim is a bit apple to oranges though - it would only be a valid comparison if Eternal was also a Gamepass game, or if Dark Ages wasn't.

Including multiple people in the same household, and game sharing etc.

Man I want this game to succeed but these "X# of players" metrics seem desperate.

Any reasonably high profile game will get lots of people trying it out if it launches on Gamepass. Even South of Midnight got over 1 million players.

For perspective, here's a comparison to 2 other recent games which also launched on Gamepass:

But they could exactly say how many copies were sold and how many were just rented via subs. But instead they choose to give you a completely pointless number....because its the biggest of all and perfectly hides any useful information about success/failure. Its annoying.

I've been fully addicted to this game. I can tell it's great because it's one of those "just play for an hour" type games. Then checking the clock and seeing that multiple hours have passed by.

I appreciate how you say "this isn't rocket science" and "beats me why people are still questioning this metric, feigning ignorance" and then immediately follow it with "this claim is a bit apples to oranges though" and "this would only be a valid comparison if [...]".

Unless they reveal the specific variables that make up this metric, it is a super vague and impossible to verify statement. When Ubi released a similar statement over AC Shadows they got assblasted, and rightfully so.

This is going to be a massive problem for a while, unfortunately. These types of metrics this close to release will always be useless.

Explain Skyrim Remaster.
I'm assuming you're asking about Oblivion Remaster? I imagine most people are going to be spending hundreds of hours on this game over a long period of time and want to mod it at some point. Anyone with any sense will not get something they want to mod on Gamepass.
