Dragon Age: Veilguard |OT| 'Oof': A non-buynary return to form

Doubt it.

A studio would have to change its approach to design if they change that.
This could be a ship of theseus situation. Their design philosophy would organically change due to quite a bit of the internal staff not being the same old Bioware staff behind the scenes.

There are quite a few youtubers who run on BS, but I have seen Cohh's content and he usually keeps things as honest as possible. He was one of the few people who actually had the gall to point out some of the problems with BG3's final 1/3 of the game without being negative or whiny about it like some of the grifter youtubers.

Feels more and more like this game is going to please nobody in the idiotic culture wars.

It seems… fine?
OK.
Not too bad.

With sales that are… OK too.

I have a backlog already, so an ‘ok, it’s fine, not too bad’ game has no chance of getting bought, but the entertainment it will give me watching the extremes of the gaming community tying themselves in knots trying to defend/destroy an average game, is more than enough for me.

Some of these locations are really good looking, Bioware still has some good artists there
Also that default female elf that I slightly modified looks hot, but is destroyed by horrible walking animation that makes her look like some roided dude, getting ME3 sprinting flashbacks. Just bizzare, as if even doing feminine walking animation was just not allowed in Bioware's fucked up ideological idiocy.

I may play the game tonight on the laptop. I have not been feeling that good at the moment. Feeling better now.

I'll hook that laptop up to the tv. Can you use a Dualsense on the pc version?

Played for about an hour this morning.
Game is damn good and visually quite nice. Combat is fun. Production values and voice acting good.
Haven't come across anything cringe yet, and the game's tone is not particularly cartoony as some reviewers were losing their minds over.
Reminds me a lot of Witcher 3 in many ways, but with far superior combat.

"For about an hour, game is damn good"...

This is a 50-60+ hour RPG mate

This is why we can't take some opinions seriously, just saying.

I really dislike how the world/level building is. Go through area > boss > cutscene > game loads automatically > you are in new area > repeat.
The sense of being immersed into its world is not there. A lot of the areas are very small too. Just corridors. Oh and the breadcrumb waypoints holding my hand as if I'd get lost when every area is a hallway.

Now at 5ish. It only got better so far.
Come at me bro.

But fair, maybe it gets substantially worse later. We'll see.

Hot, just saying that an hour isn't enough as to make an informed opinion on a 50-60+ hours epic.
I've played many games in my gaming career where I had fun for the first 5-10 hours only for me to drop them like a stone due to repetition, bad writing etc - last one being GOW Ragnarok (which i unfortunately finished and should have dropped it after 15 hours since that's when I stopped having fun).

You bought it, you have the freedom to enjoy it (or not), let's just try to not be overly enthusiastic since this game's shortcomings have been well catalogued/proven (i.e , terribad writing, bad dialogue, spammy, repetitive combat).

Cheers

Been playing off and on all day, so far feels like DA:I to me. I’m enjoying it but doing most of the side things I see before progressing the story so haven’t unlocked many of the companions yet just the elf girl tinkerer and demon assassin guy. Fount a few unique weapons and armor so far (one belt the summons bees when use a potion lol). Good time so far.

Just finished the prologue. It's been decent so far, but there hasn't been much inter-party dialogue. Nothing spectacular but enjoyable. There's a weird delay when controlling characters with a controller though, it feels a little laggy.

I will say though that it's ridiculously linear. Not a corridor simulator, but not far off it.

Ngl, there is something about this game that i gravitate towards.

I have been on the hate wagon for the last few days but whenever i see combat scene and/or envoirment i kinda dig it.

I also like the fact that its more a linear game since i feel the open world fatigue a lot this year.

I dunno gaf, apart from writing, this game looks kinda fun tho.

What do you guys think? Should i bite the bullet and taste that sweet woke mind virus :D

Who did the Audio mixing in this game?

Either there’s literally no music or it’s just set go 1/100… it makes it so there’s no atmosphere whatsoever.

Ive been reading era’s OT and i feel like both forums will meet at a healty middle with this game which is a safe 7/10

You guys had low expectations and now you kinda like it

They were flying too high and now they’ve started to hate it.

Its always so fun to experience what ever the discourse is about any conterversial game, gamers on different sides of the pendulum meet at the middle.

About 3 hours in and I'm really enjoying this game. It's just straight up fun, polished, epic, and has great sound design and visuals.

I mean you are already pretty weird by double spacing every sentence…what harm could this do?

Played a good chunk and just some general thoughts:

-Audio sucks. I think this is a miss all over. Even after playing audio settings you never hear music.

-The voice acting is fine but it is delivered flat, and dull. The writing feels very… modern MCU tv show approach if that makes sense.

-Visuals are fantastic. Art design team made some sweeping vistas.

-Combat is fun on hard. Using all of your resources and systems to tackle stuff. The best part of the game so far.

-Level design for layouts is poor. It’s very mass effect 1 like and not in a good way. I prefer linear games but this is too linear? It just needs a little more exploration pants to get lost in. It rewards exploring but it’s all very small and easy to digest.

-Cast is good. Some are meh and some are cool. Mileage may vary.

-Story takes itself seriously and has an overall good plot I’m curious to see play out.

-Choice is gone. There’s only the illusion of choice. I picked a line option that was going to be 100% dickish, and it took out the mean word so it was never offensive. You can’t be evil or mean. You’re stuck being a pussy.

-Game runs perfect on ps5 on performance mode.

Not sure if I’ll go all the way to beat it but so far this is a safe 7/10, and much better than anything BioWare has done since their peak on Xbox 360/ps3. (DA O, ME1&2)

A return to form indeed.

As I thought, the game is good but just went a bit heavy on the political message and “pixarisation” of art style.

I’ll play it in the distant future if ever. Looks like good fun overall.

I am kinda scratching my head on the Audio settings one…i’m using the 3D audio option for headphones, music is almost always playing.

Comin up on 8 hours and really enjoying it. Rogue combat is fun. Game world is very GoW corridors with room for a tiny bit of exploration just to find goodies. Its not my favorite archetype for a game world, I prefer more open areas like Inquisition, though people complained about that too. Its not perfect but it works, mainly because the environments are varied and look good.

At this point my only complaints are nitpicks, party chatter can be slightly annoying at times with characters pointing out completely obvious shit, but most games where other characters accompany you have this issue, at least Rook isnt constantly talking to himself like Aloy or Deacon St. Fuckhead. And so far the armor gear Ive unlocked all looks pretty fruity and weird, still rocking the beginner armor, hope that improves as I progress.

Man the combat is getting more and more fun. I am so glad to see andromeda's and anthem's Combo Primer and Detonation mechanic return. It's tied to a few abilities and isnt as common as its in Andromeda and Anthem, but its my favorite mechanic and happy to see it return.

Story wise its no mass effect. Nothing major has happened so far. the side characters are not interesting. the quests are not interesting. there are little to no choices being made. its basically horizon. your dialogue options dont really matter.

Combat and hair physics are the only thing carrying this game right now. thankfully its fairly linear.

My frame rate seems to degrade over time. Starts out around 75-80 fps then dips into the 50s. Restarting the game gets it back in line. Playing on a 4070 with DLSS set to balanced. Temps seems OK but idk maybe related.

Ok. I ran the game an it is recognizing my external SSD as a hard drive. Way to fail, Bioware.
I guess I will try putting it on the internal SSD.

I’m loving this so far. Just under 6 hours in, got to the cross roads, stumbled on a memory mission there and did that and then decided to head to Treviso first. Did some shopping and calling it a night after getting to the next step of the story mission there.

Game looks damn good at times. Don’t love all the character/enemy designs, but generally like the art style and there’s some very nice looking vistas at times.

Combat keeps being fun for me as well playing as a mage, unlocking some primer and detonator combos with squad members (loved that in ME Andromeda and Anthem).

I went from "never touching this shit" to "fuck it" and I have no regrets. I'm still really early in the game, so that could change, but it's pretty good so far.

Best to form our own opinions on things either way.
Yeah, i played the first few hours myself and all i can say is game is extremely polished on ps5

This is probably one of the most positive threads about the game on the internet lol. Even crazy Redditors and Resetera people are souring on it. When you've lost these people you know you are in trouble.

For me the really bad things that stick out are the horrible purple and smeared vaseline look of everything, the shitty mobile-like UI and glittering gold pickups, the simplistic writing and poor voice acting for some characters, and the hack- and -slash combat that seems like a total betrayal of what Dragon Age fans want. This game is in a lot of trouble I think.

It feel pretty average . I had the same feeling playing Kingdom of amalur , not good not terrible , great combat but Im 100% sure I will get bored after 20 hours . Loots was boring , map design boring . SPend 30 minute looking at skill tree/ability ,its seem boring too .

The difference on GAF is that we didn't hide what the game was. So the people here knew full well what they were getting into when they bought it. Less room for disappointment afterwards.

These characters have some of the most punchable faces I've ever seen.
Ofc. Also people with such faces need to be represented!

Anyways... Got the game on rent since yesterday and played quite a lot way past the prologue. My impressions are not positive at all, I find the combat system to be dull and repetitive and the skill tree is meh, it's basically slash/slash/spam skill/wait for reload all the friggin time... Dialogues are written by adults stuck in the pre-puberty limbo, and sorry, in a wannabe rpg they are quite an important part of the whole, I cannot pretend the elephant is not in the room. Graphics are nice, it runs damn good maxed out, but I cannot stand the way they designed locations. They are small hubs with basically zero exploration, no interaction with npcs whatsoever, everything is just a prop. And man, the whole story and the way it begins is a huge oof (just lending the term from one of the dialogue options). Looks epic and ends up in a fart. Must be a part of the nowadays rhetoric where everyone can be a hero!

As someone said, the woke part was just a distraction from much bigger issues. To me, this is a soulless game, sometimes it gives me free-to-play kind of game vibes.

Having played 20 hours so far it’s a 7.5 type of game. What really detracts from the score is the mediocre writing. There is hardly that much “woke” stuff either, it’s just the dialog is a big meh.

The overall plot and combat is good, so still fun to play. And I want to bang Harding dammit.

I have no idea why my game keeps crashing on the PS5 every hour or so. I play other games and this doesnt happen. Anybody else experiencing this?
