Dragon Age: Veilguard releases with over 70k concurrent players on Steam and 'Mixed Reviews'

Everyone's favorite analyst, Michael Pachter weighs in on Dragon Age and what it needs to sell. He believes it will sell between $4-6 million and if it sells less than 4M time to worry.

I still believe Bioware will be fine until at least the next Mass Effect flops. Veilguard won't be enough to shut them down if Andromeda and Anthem didn't already make them do it. And hell, who knows if EA will ever shut them down at this point, it's so crazy. Microsoft would've killed them before even giving them a chance to make Veilguard. Maybe EA can just afford them because they are filthy rich thanks to Fifa or whatever it's called nowadays and they can keep up appereances that way or something? Maybe I'm misinformed but to me Bioware being alive right now is one of the biggest bizarre mysteries of the industry to me.

Just watched Worth A Buy’s review, which is the one I’d been waiting to see. Shame as it sounds like there was a good game buried beneath the bullshit.

Yup, you could make a list a mile long of franchises (not just limited to gaming) that have been destroyed this way. And these parasites are running out of hosts to feed off of.

Just watch. BioWare is going to do the exact same thing with the next Mass Effect and run that series into the ground, then after that they’ll do the same thing to Jade Empire. Then they’ll be out of franchises to ruin.
I think ME will be a disaster because it's a franchise that's known for strong world building, strong characters and engaging story, all things that new Dragon Age fails at. I'm struggling to see anything but Bioware closure or at the very least massive layoffs and restructuring after ME.

Knowing Pachter's luck, the way this will go is that game will sell more than 4-6 million and EA will still say it's not profitable and gonna announce layoffs at BioWare

I think having a trans character in a game like this would have worked much better with different dialog and vocabulary. The words "trans" or "non-binary" belong in a Dragon Age game about as much as "drip," "on fleek," or "okay boomer."

But with better writing, they could have definitely still told a story of someone who didn't feel comfortable with their gender. As is usually the case, the issue isn't the subject of what's written, the issue is how it's written.

I think the problem for most (non fanatic people i guess) is that they do a terrible job on translating their message into the world of the game/movie/book.

Entertainment had specific messaging pretty much always (see TNG) but if you want to do that in a dark rpg setting you don't use language that you use in 2024. Spare me with the oof's etc. There is a way to give your message through the world but the people on Veilguard cannot write. It's not just the trans etc things either. Everything i have seen about the game has terrible dialogue.

I think one of the biggest offenders (for me anyway) is that they took a very dark world filled with sacrifice , backstabbing etc and made it as vanilla and inoffensive as possible. First Dragon age i will not play which is too bad because even DAI i played twice (i liked the world in general although i think they should have stick with the Grey Wardens of the first game).

This is really disappointing. The game isnt woke at all. At least in the opening 8-10 hours. And yet 350k returns despite good reviews because of some woke clips from one quest that they knew would cause issues. they went as far as telling reviewers not to cover that questline. So they knew. they knew it was going too far. They knew it was terrible and instead of simply taking it out, they decided to censor reviewers instead.

I really dont understand it. movies and games cut content all the time. deleted scenes get their own dvds. so why double down on this particular questline when you know its going to kill your sales?

All this work. For nothing. 99% of the game is not woke. And yet, 1 questline likely mandated by the game's director is going to cause this game to flop and take Bioware with it. I dont know when devs will learn. Your audience isnt gay. it's definitely not female. it's a bunch of straight dudes who are sick of tired of this shit being shoved down their throats. i dont know any women who own consoles, let alone PCs. i have yet to find a person who identifies as non-binary. they are a fraction of a fraction of the population so why pander to them instead of pandering to 99% of your audience?

The game is fine. Its not great, but its not bad. it's definitely worth playing if you are a bioware fan. its better than 90% of the games released this year, and i hope guys get over some of this woke shit and give this game a try because there is a lot of like here despite its flaws.

That's good to hear. If all this is about a single questline for one trans character then absolutely right it was a huge mistake by EA for dictating that it not be talked about by reviewers. Could have cleared up many a misconception about the game.

I'm voting with my wallet here - and I will not buy any game which continues to force stupidity upon the masses. The more "woke" and SBI games fail, the better.

As a huge Mass Effect fan, I hope to buy the next game - assuming it remains true to it's roots. If it's closer to Andromeda in writing and tone, then count me out.

this is an example of stepping on shit on purpose.

now, outside of that, the main and consistent criticism is the writing... in an RPG from a series where writing was one of its highlights.

They lost/alienate people in the middle and even hard-core fans.... is as simple as that.

Woke is irrelevant. If anything, they probably added that scene cynically to deflect criticism away from the fact that a lot of the game is underwhelming or does not connect well at all with potential buyers. A lot of people still take the bait on either side of the argument, but even that doesn't really matter if the game doesn't seem to offer what people want from an epic dark fantasy adventure.

Yo Slimy, u know i love ur takes usually, and u see me in ur graphic fidelity topic sometimes too but come on man, no woke in opening 8-10hours- how about character design- not even 1 attractive female companion(midget with freckles or 50yo looking masculine af black haired lesbian wont do it) and nasty restrictions in character creator, the game got pixar movie filter on top of ugly female usual western dev filter, thats pretty woke to me on top of irritating super timid friendly dialogues.

If some1 at EA/Bioware was smart and actually wanted to make profit on the game instead of pushing agenda they wouldnt chose that brainded lead dev/designer or w/e his role is- they should chose normal sane game director and he would decide whats ok and not ok to put in the game to not alienate majority of buyers aka series fans, myself included,

U saying urself game is not great, thats not enough for most of us to spend 70$/€ at launch, its predecesor i bought at launch got me actually hyped af , and even after whole 120h of playing it i still give it solid 8/10, hell even now if some1 can play it maxed on pc and likes western rpg genre its probably 7/10 at the least, so better than DA:V.

Its ur decision that such a "fine" game is worth it for u 70$ at launch, no1 tells u otherwise, its ur time and ur money, for most of us games that we buy at launch, at full price we gotta be hyped for, we need them to be actually great, so nothing like DA:V by ur own admission.

I don't think it's that single quest alone that is going to cause it to flop. The tone shift from dark to cartoonish, the dumbed down combat, and the generally awful writing overall will be much bigger issues than a single "woke" quest. If the game flops, the studio and the sympathetic media will use the backlash over it as a flimsy excuse ("gamers are bigots!") rather than doing some real introspection.

The reality is, this isn't Dragon Age.
This is a bad Saturday Morning Cartoon rendition of Dragon Age, in terms of art, writing, and presentation.

Oh, the game's wokery has been evident for a while; it wasn't just that one scene. Top surgery scars, character creator options limited to itty bitty titties and no ass, other lame dialog clips (though that one was particularly bad).

So we don't know how many it sold on Steam, right? We're only looking at concurrent player peaks to infer success?

Re. the refund data, you'd need to know what the average was before DA launched in order to make a decent inference about DA refunds.

I disagree with Pachter and think the budget + marketing was probably higher than that, and they'll probably need more like 6 m. to recoup costs. But I'm just guessing like he is.

Roman Polanski is a great director that just happened to anally rape a minor 40 years ago. As a father I refuse to watch his movies.
US should have fucking kidnap the fker from french soil, even unofficially using some merc group or w/e and take him back to the country, no mercy for child rapists, ever, cut off his fking worm for good measure so any other celeb doesnt even dare thinking they can get away with it.

Cool maybe I will buy it cheap on Biowares GOING OUT OF BUSINESS sale! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

No one made them put in this horrible propaganda into their game. The have to take responsibility for it ... good or bad. If they would have put in some insane far right character that meant you had to accept Jesus or else .. it would have been treated even worse and wouldn't have got a pass from the media at all.

After watching playthroughs, im glad i did not preorder this, the disney-like dialogue, the repetitive, but flashy, combat, just not worth a full price.

If i do play it im getting it at 75% off, i just won't give them my money for such half assed, terrible writing.

It wasnt even just ign with its 9/10 score, many more sellout reviewers did it too, including owned by ign eurogamer that gave max score to the game for example.
Glad we/players dont support that shit and majority of us not believe professional (aka paid off) journos anymore.

...it is done, it didn't bomb but we are witnessing a less than 1 million sales for a game that should have made 5 in the first week.

Edit: why everyone have so huge heads!!??

Thats huge bomb for AAA western game and known IP like DA, huge heads for the characters is another way of making sure to cut off any possibility for male gaze- females cant be attractive.

Yeah, I think that's what it boils down to.
I don't think gamers as a whole are a bunch of bigots, it's just that they don't like feeling preached at during their fun/escapism.
Three types

Type 1 Bigot which are the majority in the world - people who simply disagrees with LGBT stuff and rightfully so but don't actually hate them.

Type 2 Bigot which are a good amount but nowhere near type 1 - they hate lgbt stuff because of it being pushed in media/gaming. But they'll rather not hate the lgbt. This number is unfortunately growing due to what's happening.

Type 3 bigots - these people will hate lgbt people no matter what and I think we can all agree that this is the point where it's bad. For example once in awhile you'll see reasonable lgbt people in forums or comments that do not agree with the whole dei/woke stuff but you'll still see some actual bigots hate on them. So yeah these people just hate gays and lesbians for the sake of hating and we can all agree it's bad.
Don’t see the issue, lesbians are hot. Trans are not. Played the First Descendant with my 6-year old , she immediately wanted to play as “the pretty lady” (game is thrash).
Yeah most people do not have problems with lesbian or gays. While not the norm and it'll never be but at least they were there since ancient times and still kept the Male/Female and Adam/Eve blueprint. While trans is possibly something else entirely since it basically normalized something that should be a mental problem 100%. It's crazy how we got to a point where someone could just wake up one day and decide "you know what I want to off my genital and become a different gender". Like how the fuck did this ever become even normal or debatable in the first place when it absolutely belongs in a mental hospital lol. What's worse is that they aren't just keeping this crazy thinking to themselves but they want others to agree with them. And like others have said, real life Lesbians aren't hot with the exception of a few. The lesbians that you think are hot are either Bisexual girls or straight girls acting lesbian.
65k CC players right now. The 100k dream is probably dead.
You got to give them more credit, 100k is nowhere near a dream number for such a awesome and huge production, budget, and big named game like DA Veilguard in the first place. Even 200k ccp would be bad. Granblue Fantasy Relink is good with 114k ccp. Space Marine 2 looking a bit more expensive than the former is good with 230k ccp. Dragon Age Veilguard would be good with 350k ccp. Basically Space Marine 2 shouldn't be celebrated if it only got 114k like Granblue even though it's passable and DA Veilguard shouldn't be celebrated if it only had 230k ccp on steam like Space Marine 2. So we need to aim higher like 350k ccp or 300k min. We should root for it today and tomorrow and look pass the 100k mark cause that is absolutely nothing.

So the writing is perfectly fine outside of one specific questline and not a consistent mess of insultingly repetitive expository dialogue, puerile conflict and choice handling, and HR-speak suffused throughout like countless examples have demonstrated?
