Dragon Age: Veilguard releases with over 70k concurrent players on Steam and 'Mixed Reviews'

This is really disappointing. The game isnt woke at all. At least in the opening 8-10 hours. And yet 350k returns despite good reviews because of some woke clips from one quest that they knew would cause issues. they went as far as telling reviewers not to cover that questline. So they knew. they knew it was going too far. They knew it was terrible and instead of simply taking it out, they decided to censor reviewers instead.

I really dont understand it. movies and games cut content all the time. deleted scenes get their own dvds. so why double down on this particular questline when you know its going to kill your sales?

All this work. For nothing. 99% of the game is not woke. And yet, 1 questline likely mandated by the game's director is going to cause this game to flop and take Bioware with it. I dont know when devs will learn. Your audience isnt gay. it's definitely not female. it's a bunch of straight dudes who are sick of tired of this shit being shoved down their throats. i dont know any women who own consoles, let alone PCs. i have yet to find a person who identifies as non-binary. they are a fraction of a fraction of the population so why pander to them instead of pandering to 99% of your audience?

The game is fine. Its not great, but its not bad. it's definitely worth playing if you are a bioware fan. its better than 90% of the games released this year, and i hope guys get over some of this woke shit and give this game a try because there is a lot of like here despite its flaws.
I have seen enough reviews on YouTube illustrating what passes for writing in this game. It’s plane terrible.

Couple that with Fortnite visuals, non controllable characters in combat and mid companions, it’s far, far from being even a good game.

I am sure I will give it a shot when it drops on EA pass or goes for $10-15 on sale on couple of years, but this game is nothing of the sort “Return to form” they have been pushing. 😒

I'm still surprised by the amount of people who bought this game though. I guess there's an audience out there who hears the words "Dragon Age" and will buy it regardless of anything else.

Sure the gameplay might be adequate, good even but when every other aspect of the title is this bad then you'd have to have blinders on imo to still buy into it.

Big budget western fantasy games usually attract a LOT of players which was why I thought they could have easily gotten over 100k on the first day even though everything in the game looks crappy. Although 100k or even 200k would be underwhelming for this game. Good numbers on the ratio of what Granblue Fantasy Relink and Space Marine 2 got would be if Veilguard is at around 350k ccp right now.

So when this inevitably underperforms, who's betting the corporate media excuse will be, "Single Player games with no GaaS elements" are to blame?
I think it will settle on the bad writing and character banter. That’s as far as most talking heads are willing to go.

Luke Stephens is still hand waving the controversy surrounding the Taash scenes. “It’s whatever.” Like, ok dude. Sure.

No one seems to be calling out the IGN review for being completely ridiculous.

I wonder if this is the timeline in which Sonic X Shadow Generations reached 1 million units sold faster than Dragon Age? Would they announce 1 million milestone or wait for bigger number?

I'm 90% certain that Luke Stephens is socially conservative, but he will never address this stuff. You can have a bigger audience by ignoring politics and not nailing your colours to the mast.

Great comment! All the bubbles have popped now; this is the moment.

Although there's been a lot of talk about the activist elements, there's been many complaints that have nothing do with that - the art style not fitting the tone of the series, the writing, the lack of conflict between party members, the inability to role play as a bad or evil person, etc. One that isn't talked about much is the inability to manage your party's game play - many fans of RPGs want that and it was removed for this installment. There's too many things to narrow it down to just one.

So I think it will end up at around the same as Metaphor's CCU number by tomorrow, at around 86K. So we can assume they have the same Steam sales figures. BUT Metaphor has much stronger PS5 console sales figures (Xbox figures are basically the same for both games)

So chances are Veilguard initial total sales number is lower than Metaphor's 1 million sales. We don't know yet which one has longer legs of course

Ack don't be dissing my man Luke, I enjoy his videos, comes across very genuine and his stuff is well produced and easy to listen too, I'm personally glad he's not getting involved in this drama, leave it to the hundreds of other YouTubers to cover it, I like that he doesn't get involved in this shit and doesn't take a side

Watched a video the other day, these are one of the few types of games where the female audience is actually quite large, they also have large numbers of gay people playing them as well. The issue is them making this a lecture, anything related to sex and romance should be player controlled, you shouldn't have a quest where you have to go watch someone come out to their parents unless it's part of a gay romance storyline that you've chosen and even then it's not necessary, these people are all adults living in a fantasy world so why not eliminate that kind of thing in the first place and just let two people be happy together? why add drama that's not needed, these games aren't taking place in the real world.

Non binary & trans are both identity issues so I don't get why those get lumped in with LGB, they are totally different things in the first place. Most of the "non binary" people are just straight people who want to claim to be "queer" (another term I hate) just so they can seem interesting to people online. They generally only date the opposite sex but they may paint their nails or something to go with their cover story lol.

What I don't understand with these games is they know this shit just causes a massive backlash and negative press outside of the bought and paid mainstream media and will financial hurt it so why in the fuck do the executives in charge tell the purple haired fuckwit, no you're not putting that god awful character and cringe af questline into the main game instead you can make it a downloadable DLC character that gives people a choice to download it and have it in their game whilst allowing the main game to release without the huge controversy around such a decisive issue... It's a no fucking brainer

Not a big fan of Luke’s content in general and his lack of spine does him no favors.

Why are you highlighting a single one star review? And you cannot derive sales numbers from Amazon.

It's not a lack of spine, I'm sure he thinks just like the majority of us off camera but he has a channel to run and he simply doesn't need to be aligned one way or the other, not everyone has to draw a line in the sand around these issues

He shouldn’t bring it up if he isn’t going to provide anything of substance on the topic is my point. I’m not asking for him to go scorched earth and become the next Endymion.

That's the problem though, it's a slope and once you get on it you'll just keep sliding down it, best to stay the fuck off it and merely acknowledge the existence of the controversy, as I said I follow Endymion and a few others so I don't need Luke to become like the rest of em

Like with most of dumb shit done by executives, egomania and narcissism. One or a few people had enough power and influence to barrel roll decisions with wishlist demands specific to their tastes and not the goal of the broadest appeal to make the most money.

Cold logic will dictate market research and focus groups are required for games this size and scope. (And that has its own drawbacks) That you need as many "asses in seats" (to use movie lingo) to make this not only viable but desirable for a publically traded company. You want zero, zilch, nada issues limiting your appeal.

These are vanity projects but with an enormous price tag.

This is meant for a fraction of a fraction of the general audience.

Edit: Also, after the money has been invested into these vanity projects, there is a cost for damage control and soothing the negative backlash. So it costs more... then instead of just doing the corporate drone approach of playing it safe, knowing your audience, and playing the greatest hits. It fails far more than it ever succeeds.

Can't say i care too much whether this game succeeds or not, after Anthem and witnessing how poorly it was managed that alone was enough to convince me old bioware is dead, I am surprised this many people were willing to give it a chance on pc.

This situation reminds me of politicians and their lies.
It's obvious that they are lying, but many are so gullible.
Not just politicians, this week I was kind of shocked how brazenly both biggest news media websites in my country (Czechland) lied about Trump - in both headline and article. It's like they are on Kamala's payroll. In Czechland! Sometimes I feel like we are US colony who can vote in US elections given how much propaganda we are fed.

It's the "ship of theseus" metaphor. How many people are left from the bioware heyday? How many can be replaced before it's an entirely different entity?

This is why corporate "culture" is do important and "diversity is our strength" is a lie. It's culture, and folks buying into it despite their personal beliefs, that allows for continuity. If bioware had a strong culture of game design and vision that all employees had to share; they could produce consistent games. But if you let individual employees drive culture or chase trends....then you flounder.

Why not? Amazon is the largest retailer

plus Metaphor got Japanese PS5 sales behind it, while Dragon Age sales will probably non-existent in Japan

so I do believe Metaphor’s console figure is much higher than Veilguard

Disagree. Adults can touch on hot button topics without making it the core focus of their channel.

We don't need Amazon to tell us a JRPG is going to outsell a western RPG in Japan. And you are comparing a game that has been for sale on Amazon for three weeks against one that has only been out for a few days. That's not a good comparison. We are not going to have any real information about sales until we get sales rankings from Circana and GSD.

I think EA didn't expect huge sales for this game, that's why no Denuvo and the 17$ offer on EA Play lol

Some heads will roll at Bioware, but the studio will not end.
